Someone says, "Time is money." But I think time is more important than money. Why? Because when money is spent, we can get it back. However, when time is lost, it'll never return. That is why we mustn't waste time. Even a second (秒) is very important. We should make full use of our time to do something useful.
But it is a pity that many people don't know the importance of time. They spend their limited (有限的) time smoking, drinking and playing cards. They don’t know that wasting time means wasting some of their own lives.

This means that if they have to stop suddenly, they cannot stop quickly enough to avoid hitting other vehicles or people. You need to remember this when you are crossing the street or walking along the sidewalk.”
“It’s not only drivers who cause accidents, however. People on foot-pedestrians, and bicycle riders often cause accidents, too. Pedestrians sometimes walk out into the street without looking. You should always look on both sides before stepping into the street.”
“Do any of you ride a bike? Bicycle riders can cause accidents by changing directions suddenly or without warning other road users. Before you turn left, for example, you should check behind you to make sure there aren’t any cars, trucks or buses coming. You should show with your left hand to tell that you want to turn left. You should not turn until the street is clear.”

A famous study was done in a school by a professor (教授) from a university. At the start of the school year, the teachers were given the names of five children. They were told that these five were the most excellent students in the class. But the fact was that these students were only average (中等),and they were not the best students at all. Well, guess what? At the end of the year, all the five average students scored among the highest in the class.
What made these average students change so much to become top students? The only difference was the change in their teachers’ attitude (态度). Because the teachers believed that these five kids were the top students, they expected more from them. And so these five average students began to believe and expect more from themselves. So they worked harder to do as well as they could.
Do you know? If you expect the best from people, they’ll usually want to give you their best. A great leader said, “Treat (对待) a person just how he appears to be on the outside, and you’ll make him even worse. But treat a person like he’s already a success, and you’ll help make him the best he can be.”
Like the true story of 7-year-old Johnny, his teacher got so angry with him that one day she said, “Johnny, you’re the naughtiest boy in this class. I’m sure you’ll never change.” The next year Johnny had a new teacher. And on the first day of class, she met with Johnny after school and said, “Johnny, I’ve heard a lot about you! But do you know that I don’t believe a word of it.” And every day after that, this new teacher treated Johnny as if he was one of the smartest students even when Johnny did naughty things. Later on, Johnny became a school leader. Because that’s the power of our belief (信任) and attitude toward children.
61. The professor started his research by_________.
A. telling the five students to work harder than ever before
B. teaching the five children himself
C. telling the teachers the five students were the best in the class
D. asking the five children to find a new teacher

A. the professor’s study
B. the change in the professor’s attitude

A. To show the importance of encouragement.
B. To show that the boy was clever enough.

B. the students scored highest only because they worked hard
C. if you expect the most from people, you’ll get the least

Do you want to watch a hot movie while chatting with your friend on the pho ne,or shop with your mobile phone while on a train? The ongoing technology development has made these things come to our daily life.
It is said that China has had the right to use the third generation telecommunication technology (3G) since 2009.
The so-called 3G technology allows mobile phone users enjoy high-speed Internet-based services. It helps increase mobility in many areas of our lives.
Nowadays, many mobile phones allow you to send e-mails or read the latest stories on the Internet, but the speed is not pleasing, which is only 10 kilobytes (KB) per second. But 3G goes on the Internet with a speed of up to 2 megabytes (MB) per second. If recent mobile technology is like riding bikes on a country road, then 3G will make you fly on the information highway. For example,a mobile phone with 3G technology can help download a three-minute MP3 song within two minutes while it will take you up to an hour to do this with your common mobile phone.
In the UK and many other European countries where 3G services have around since 2003,3G has already become a part of modem business life.Nowadays, office workers are able to spend some of their working hours at home. The new technology allows the first aid services to provide a video link with a hospital or doctor for patients who need special care.
55.From the passage we can know that .
A.we can’t enjoy Internet-based services now at the moment in China

D.3G movies on mobile phones are coming to us in the nearby future.
D
Can you imagine the very first modern Olympics in 1896 with no landing mats (海绵垫), no stopwatches and no photo finishes? In fact, cameras and stopwatches were not used until the 1932 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, USA. Thanks for technology, Olympics have been developing at an unbelievable speed.
Today technology has completely changed sports. Take sports equipment for example. Electronic eyes hanging at the starting lines, together with digital cameras, could catch correct race time and also help to catch runners who “jump the gun”. As runners cross the finishing line, special digital cameras can also easily decide the winner. The days of “dead heats” are gone.
Technological developments are also good for athletes. New sports suits, which get less wind effects, can help cut up to one-tenth of a second from runners’ race time. Top athletes, like Liu Xiang, are even provided with hand-made sports shoes. These shoes are made to fit the athlete exactly -- and there are some more changes in the shoes that meet each runner’s personal needs.
Technology has also changed the way of many sports. Take one example -- the pole vault. The landing mat makes a big difference to the vaulting style as athletes no longer need to worry about hurting themselves as they fall. Without these worries, athletes could jump higher. New swimming pools have been used to help swimmers swim with easier effort and sports scientists have worked out a new swimming style to improve the speed.
The increasing technological developments have led many sportsmen to suggest that the “Olympic spirit” is being lost in a rush to break records and win medals. Many developing countries say that technology has become too important in sport and that athletes from developing countries are disadvantaged. There are no easy answers but one thing is sure -- we cannot turn back times. Technology cannot go backwards.
58. The underlined phrase “dead heats” means __________.
A. sports equipment which was out of date
B. runners who jumped the gun while running
C. diseases which killed runners in hot weather
D. races in which runners finished at the same time
59. What infers from the fourth paragraph?
A. Scientists can measure the speed of swimming.
B. The pole vault was not quite safe in the past.
C. Pole vaulters jump lower with landing mats.
D. New pools have changed the style of swimming.
60. The purpose of the writer in writing this article is _______.
A. to suggest we should keep up with the times
B. to suggest we reduce technology in Olympics
C. to suggest we train better athletes like Liu Xiang
D. to suggest we care more about developing countries

The computer makes doing schoolwork easier for me than it was for my mom and dad. For example, when writing book reports and stories, I use Microsoft Word instead of a pen and paper. That way, after my teacher checks my work, I can go back and make revisions without having to rewrite the whole thing. And Microsoft Word has a spell check! I use it all the time.
For English class, we are reading The Outsiders by S. E. Hinton. As pre-reading homework, my teacher asked us to research teenage groups on the Internet. I tried Google, Encarta, and Yahoo first, and finally found an article on www.time.com.
For geography homework on the United States, I used Encarta to learn about the Mississippi River. I needed to find out how deep and wide the river is, what states it runs through, and what kinds of fish live in it. I used the information to show how the geography of a country influences its economy (经济). For example, the river’s trade paths, the number of fish caught in it and the tourist development.
I never go to the library to do research. It takes too much time. Since I live in New York City and both my parents work, getting to the library isn’t always easy. For a big task or research, I used to stay at the library to read, or sign out whatever books or magazines I needed. Now being able to find the information in my own living room makes everything a lot simpler. Online dictionaries and encyclopedias (百科全书) also save time.
Sometimes, I think the computer spoils (娇惯) my generation because it is so easy --- at least physically. But computers are not like television, which does the thinking for you. You still have to use your mind. I prefer using a computer, easy, fun and fast.
65. Did his dad and mom write on the computer?
66. What software does the writer use when he writes?
67. Where can the writer find a lot of useful information for his research work quickly?
68. Why does the writer prefer using the computer a lot?

答案:

People often said Thomas Edison was the greatest genius(天才) of his age. There are only a few men in all of history, who have changed the lives of other men as much as the inventor of the first useful electric light. But Edison could never be pleased only because someone said he was a genius. "There is no such a thing as genius," Edison said. He thought what people called genius was mostly hard work.
But Edison was a thinker as well as a worker. From his earliest days as a child he wondered about the secrets of nature. He tried to understand them, and then he tried to learn what he could usefully do with them.
Edison enjoyed thinking. He knew that most people would do almost anything instead of the difficult work of thinking, especially if they do not think very often. But he knew, too, that thinking could give men enjoyment and pleasure.
Edison could not understand why anyone could not be interested in life. As he loved to think, he also loved to work. On the day he became 75 years old, someone asked him what idea he had about life. God replied, “Among the many angels(天使), I chose one for you. She will take care of you.” But the child wasn't sure he really wanted to go. “But here I don't do anything else but sing and smile, that's enough for me to be happy.”
“Your angel will sing for you and will also smile for you every day. And you will feel your angel’s love and be happy.”
“And how am I going to be able to understand when people talk to me,” the child continued, “if I don't know the language that men talk?”
God patted him on the head and said, “Your angel will tell you the most beautiful and sweet words you will ever hear. Your angel will teach you how to speak.”
“And what am I going to do when I want to talk to you?”

“Your angel will defend you even if it means risking her life!”
“But I will always be sad because I will not see you any more,” the child continued warily.
God smiled on the young one. “Your angel will always talk to you about me and will teach you how to come back to me, even though I will always be with you.”
At that moment there was much peace in Heaven, but voices from earth could already be heard. The child knew he had to start on his journey very soon. He asked God one more question, softly, “God, please tell me my angel's name.”

One of the most common questions I am asked is whether, when, and how to follow up after a job interview. Following up in some way is necessary. Yes, you can get a job without it, but if you compete with other top candidates(候选人), following up can sometimes help you when the other candidate doesn’t. Here’s how to follow up well:
Send a thank-you note at once. E-mail is fine for this and has the advantage of arriving faster, but handwritten notes are still appreciated (欣赏). And if there are many interviews(面试), send a thank-you note each time.
Find out their timeline. Hopefully, you asked about their timeline in the interview itself, but if you didn’t, follow up within a week to strengthen your interest and politely ask what they expect their timeline for a decision to be.
Be patient. Most commonly, job seekers are too worried about the result. It doesn’t look worried to express your interest in the job or check in to ask about the timeline.
Don’t be nervous if you don’t hear from them at once. The hiring process often takes longer than a candidate would like, maybe the decision makers are out of town. If you’re past the time they indicated you would hear something, this isn’t necessarily cause for nervousness. Hiring often ends up taking longer than expected. Just politely follow up, explain you’re very interested but understand that hiring can take time, and ask if they have the latest timeline.

Vacations are wonderful chances to visit colleges. So my friend and I went to see colleges in Connecticut. In most of the places professors or students were eager(渴望) to show us around and talk to us. However, I ended up disliking one university simply because no one bothered(特意)to help me.
My friend wanted to see the Theatre department and luckily she ran into a theatre student who was happy to tell of his experiences there. She immediately fell in love with the place. I really wanted to see the Studio Arts department. The Arts building seemed huge and splendid(壮丽的). I walked inside but was unable to find a single person. I went to the Admissions Office and asked if they could find someone who could show me around. Strangely, they didn't know one single person in the Studio Arts department! Finally they told me to go back to the building and ask for "Stacy". No last name, just "Stacy". I thought this should be interesting.
I returned to the building and there happened to be one office open and a woman was there. After I explained, she replied quickly, "Well, I can't help you. I'm working on the computer." (How rude!) After hearing "Stacy", she pointed to another office. I found the so-called "Stacy", and all she said was that I could go downstairs and look around if I wanted. I explained that I had already been downstairs and that no one was there! She just shrugged(耸肩)and didn't know what to say. It's hard to believe that there wasn't a single person to help me in such a well-known university.
So if someone recommends(推荐)a school to you and says what a wonderful tour she/ he had, you can't always take his/her word for it. My friend and I both visited this university on the same day, yet we had two totally different experiences.

Dear students,
I’m Mr. Green. I’m very happy to be your guest speaker today. It’s a great pleasure to visit your school and meet all of you here.
I would like to tell you how to improve your study. Maybe you are more interested in sports than in history. You probably think you will never be a top student. In fact, anyone can become a better student if he or she wants to. If you can use your time well, you may improve your study without much work. Here’s how:
Plan your time carefully. When you plan your week time, you should make a 1ist of things that you have to do. First write down the time for eating, sleeping, dressing, etc. Then decide on a good time for studying. Of course, studying shouldn’t take all of your time. Don’t forget to leave yourself enough time for hobbies.
Find a good place to study. Look around the house for a good study place. Keep this space, which may be a desk or just a corner of your room. No games, radio, or television! When you sit down to work, think only about the subject!
Make good use of your time in class. Listen carefully to what the teacher says. Careful listening in class means less work later. You also need to take notes in class, because it can make it easier for you to learn well.
There are only a few ways mentioned here to help you with your studying. I believe you can find many other ways besides these.
65. Can you become a better student if you want to?
66. Does the writer ask you to leave enough time for your hobby?
67. How many ways are mentioned in the passage?
68. If you want to make good use of your time in class, what should you do?

Insects are very useful in medicine. Believe it or not, maggot (蛆) are now used in hospitals. When a person gets a very bad injury on his body, the dead skin must be removed (除去). While you are doing this, a good way is to write—keep a diary, write notes or letters, then if possible, ask some others to go through what you have written and tell you where it is wrong. Many mistakes in your speaking will be easily found when you write. Through correcting the mistakes you can do better in learning English.
If you are slow in speaking, don’t worry. One of the helpful ways is reading, either aloud or to yourself. The important thing is to choose something interesting to read.
