At least 36 people were killed in a stampede(踩踏) at the Bund area around midnight when huge crowds of people gathered to celebrate the New Year, according the Shanghai government. The stampede happened about 11:35 pm on New Year’s Eve at the Chenyi Square, killing 36 and leaving 42 injured.
