The pupils of the remote Beau-Roc primary school in Haiti are chanting. One of them plays a guitar made from an empty oil tin.Their headmistress, Emile Jean-Noel, is one of the few women school headteachers in the country.

Today, over 70% of Haitian population live without proper food, water, schools, or housing. To reduce the hunger that prevents learning and to encourage parents to send their children to school, meals are provided by the World Food Programme.

"We are so cut off that we have many difficulties," comments Emile, adding that finding chalk, school books and other materials is practically impossible.Entile tries to encourage people around her to make use of available resources. Her efforts are be aring fruit. One of her successes was convincing local women to contribute to their children' s schooling and increase their income by selling embroidery( 刺绣) and other handicrafts.

Recent political instability has meant that the country has not invested (投资) in education for ten years.Only 44% of children go to school and less than half of them finish primary school. Less than a third of these children go on to secondary school. In rural areas it is not rare to find 17 and 18 year olds in primary school- Beau-Roc has only 4 teachers for 260 pupils.Emile works constantly to improve her pupils' environment.Under her direction, a local worker is now constructing a store house for the food delivered regularly by the WFP.

Not only is Emile' s salary small, but she receives it irregularly. For her, transport is a real headache. She lives five kilometers away and has to take the tap tap, a privately-owned bus, costing more than she can afford.

"The decision to be a rural teacher in Haiti should not be taken lightly" , Emile comments. "With all the sacrifices and risks it requires, only those who are really cut out for teaching should do it." However, Emile loves her job."I always feel at home with the children and, because the parents understand what I'm doing, I try to give my best."

Nuclear energy is a controversial topic. There has been widespread public debate over it.It seems that the unclear energy is either a gigantic disaster waiting to happen or the all-powerful way of the future.

It is often believed that unclear energy is something we cannot do without. We live in a consumer society with a huge demand for commercial products of all kinds. Besides, an increase in industrial production is considered to be one solution to the problem of mass unemployment. Such an increase assumes an abundant and cheap energy supply. Many people believe nuclear energy provides an endless and economical source of power and that it is therefore fundamental for an industrially developing society. Among other advantages is that unclear power, except for accidents, is clean. A further advantage is that a unclear power station can be run and maintained by relatively few technical and administrative staff. The nuclear reactor represents a great step in our scientific evolution and, whatever the anti-nuclear group says, it is wrong to expect a return to more primitive sources of fuel.

However, opponents(people who oppose something)of nuclear energy point out that nuclear power stations bring a direct danger not only to the environment but also to civil liberties. Environmentalists argue in the long run nuclear energy wastes valuable resources and disturbs the ecology to an extent which could bring about the destruction of the human race. Furthermore, it is questionable whether unclear power is a cheap source of energy when everything is considered. There have, for example, been very costly accidents in America, in Britain and, of course, in Russia. The possibility of increases in the cost of uranium(铀)in addition to the cost of greater safety provisions could price nuclear power out of the market.

In spite of the case against nuclear energy above, nuclear energy programmes are expanding, which assumes a continual growth in industrial production and consumer demands. However, it is doubtful whether this growth will or can continue. Having weighed up the arguments in both sides, it seems that there are good economic and ecological reasons for sources of energy other than nuclear power.

63.What’s the writer’s attitude toward nuclear energy?

A.Objective. B.Negative. C.Tolerant. D.Apprectiative.

64.According to the opponents, which of the following is true of nuclear energy?

A.Primitive. B.Endless C.Cheap. D.Unsafe.

65.Some people believe that nuclear energy is the most important because .

A.unclear power stations can be run and maintained by relatively few staff.

B.it can meet the growing demand of an industrially developing society.

C.it represents a huge step forward in our scientific evolution..

D.it provides a perfect way out to increase employment

66.Which of the following shows the structure of the passage?

CP: Central Point P: Point Sp: Sub-point(次要点) C: Conclusion

Traditional surgical procedures require surgeons to make large incisions(伤口) in a patient' s body in order to gain access to the organs inside. It was once common for heart surgeons, who perform highly specialized and complex procedures, to make long incisions in a patient' s chest and then split the breastbone to reach the heart.Patients who undergo surgery are often at the risk of infection (感染) , as bacteria can infect the cut in the skin.In addition, there is often a lengthy recovery period.

A surgical technique known as " keyhole surgery" has become more common in recent years. In general, the surgeon will make a couple of small incisions around the area where the operation i?going to be performed.Tubes are pushed into the holes, and a tiny camera is put into the body. The camera is attached to a large monitor screen and the doctor can see it while performing the operation. In addition to the camera, doctors also push their tiny surgical instruments through the tubes. The awkward part of keyhole surgery is that it is counterintuitive; that is to say, if a surgeon wants to move the tool to the left, he or she must push it to the right.

Another new machine called the "da Vinci Surgical System has been tested in hospitals in the US- Unlike keyhole surgery, this robot's moving parts are designed to copy man's hand and wrist movement, thus providing better control and sensitivity.Sitting at a console (控制台) a few feet from the patient, the surgeon can control the instruments by moving highly sensitive pads. The area of the body is enlarged on a screen, which gives surgeons a view similar to that of a traditional surgical procedure.

The da Vinci Surgical System has been welcomed as revolutionary by many surgeons.Patients with serious illnesses must still undergo major surgery, but the smaller incisions typically mean a shorter recovery time.On the downside, some operations have taken up to fifty minutes longer because surgeons are inexperienced at using the new technology. As surgeons become more familiar with the machines, the time needed for surgical procedures is likely to decrease.

67.What can be learned about the traditional surgery according to the passage?

A.Long incisions are made in a patient’s chest.

B.It often takes a longer time to do an operation.

C.The cost of the traditional surgery is very high.

D.The incision is likely to be infected after the operation.

68.Which of the following is one disadvantage of keyhole surgery?

A.It requires the use of long.thin tools and a tiny camera.

B.The doctor can not view the inside of the patient’s body clearly.

C.The direction in which a doctor moves the surgical tools is opposite.

D.A tiny camera has to be inserted into the patient's body in advance.

69.The da Vinci Surgical System differs from keyhole surgery in that it ______.

A.requires that a surgeon make more small incisions on a patient

B.reduces the amount of time it takes to perform a surgical procedure

C.allows the surgeon to use the surgical instruments more sensitively

D.gets rid of the need for surgeons to make large incisions on patients

70.The passage mainly tells readers about ______.

A.the challenges bro ught about by new technology

B.the application of new technologies in modem surgery

C.the reflections on the development in medical science

D.the benefits and drawbacks of the da Vinci Sureical System
