Bernie was smart and wanted to be his own boss. When Bernie was 25 he took a wife. Bernie had saved some money and decided on a dry goods and grocery store combined.

Marie had a knack(诀窍)for arranging the merchandise (货物)to appeal to customers and Bernie didn’t mind the long hours. He was happy, and life was good. The business thrived until the great depression hit the entire country. No one had money to purchase pretty things or even food. In 1930, Marie had a heart attack and left Bernie alone.

Following Marie’s death, which Bernie felt was brought about from worrying about the store, He lost interest in everything. His inventory remained almost the same, as nothing much was sold .A deep depressing set in. He had lost Marie , his true love , and now his business seemed lost as well, Why did he want to live ?

A few houses down the street lived a family who had also fallen on hard times. They seldom had three meals a day. Julie , the youngest girl, was fourteen . Julie worried about Mr. Mears’ getting so thin. At meal time, she would take a portion of their meal to Bernie. She would stay and talk to him, dusting and cleaning .

After several months Bernie began to improve. He still had no customers to speak of, but from what he had left in the store , he would sack a few cans to take to Julie’s family.

In early spring, Julie saw her father planting a garden. This gave her an idea. She suggested Bernie making a garden in the big space beside the store, which they had once thought would become a parking lot , and sell the produce really cheap in the store. It would help the neighbors and also Bernie to have money for new merchandise. They would plant half the garden space now and half in three weeks giving them fresh produce for a long time .

Julie prayed hard as they placed the seeds in the ground. When the seeds sprouted, Julie looked anxiously at the rows and there were no empty spots. They all came up and produced the best crop of vegetables Bernie had ever seen. They soon became well-known in the community for having the best prices and finest produce in town . They also extended credit to their neighbors and accepted various items as trade for merchandise.

The two of them worked hard throughout the 1930s and made a very successful business. Julie earned a salary . As the economy picked up, so did sales at the store.

第II卷(非选择题  满分35分)

阅读下面短文并回答问题,然后将答案写到相应的位置上(请注意问题后的词数要求)。

[1]If you can’t find your keys , ask a woman. It’s reported that females are better than males at multitasking, particularly if those tasks include searching for lost items, for example , the car keys.

[2]Researchers carried out two experiments, in which men and women have to juggle(同时做)several tasks. Examples of this include working in a busy office or cooking several dishes at once for a meal. In the first battle of the sexes , the volunteers played a computer game that required rapid changes of attention. Both sexes slowed down , but the women slowed less. This suggests that they found multitasking easier.

[3]In the second experiment , volunteers were given 8 minutes to complete a set of sums , search for restaurants on a map and work out the route they would take to search for a set of keys lost in a field. The two sexes did well on all the tasks, but the key hunt — in which the searches planned by the women were judged to be clearly superior. When it is the only thing to be done, both sexes are equally good at it. It showed that men’s ability to plan a search for lost keys breaks down, when put under the pressure of multitasking. The results suggest that women are better at multitasking than men.

[4] Women’s advantage at doing tasks has its roots in evolution. In the Stone Age , men could probably go out and hunt for food , while the women stayed at home and multi-tasked. They were always looking out for their children , as well as doing other things , like gathering fruits and doing mending and making stone tools. Men probably have somewhat more of a one-track mind.

76. What does the text mainly talk about ? (no more than 6 words )

77. How many experiments did researchers do ? (no more than 2 words )

78. In the first battle of the sexes , what did the volunteers do ? (no more than 12 words )

79. When searching for lost keys is their only task , how do both sexes perform ? (no more than 5 words )

80. What work did men mainly do in the Stone Age ? (no more than 8 words )

第二节 书面表达(共25分)

Dear editor,

On World Reading Day, we went to the local library to serve as volunteers. I’d like to tell you something about the bad behaviors of some readers.

First, some readers don’t put the books where they were after reading. Also other people talk loudly or even make phone calls in the library, which greatly disturbs other readers. There are also people who eat and drink while reading, leaving rubbish on the table though there are dustbins nearby. What’s worse, notes are found in some books, making it hard for others to read. Some pages are gone, probably torn away by readers who find them useful.

I hope all the people coming to the library behave themselves while enjoying reading, creating a better reading environment for all the book lovers.

Yours respectfully,

Li Hua
