M: Yes, maybe. But the idea sounds interesting.

W: Well, then, you ought to get more information about it assoon as possible.

M: If you like, I could do the washing-up.

W: No, don't bother. I can do it myself later.

W: Would you like me to make coffee now?

W: Oh. it's ten minutes' walk. If you like, I could drive you there.

W: I'm fed up with sitting on packing cases, Joe. Don’t youthink we should buy at least two chairs?

M: Do you know how much new chairs cost? One cheapcomfortable armchair is eighty pounds.

W: Yes, I know. It's terrible. But I have an idea. Why don't weM: All right. Which one shall we go to?

W: Portobello Road, I think. There are a lot of secondhandthings there. And we'll have to go tomorrow. It's only openon Saturdays.

M: What time do you want to go? Not too early. I hope.

W: The guidebook says the market is open from nine to six. It'sa very popular market, so we'd better be there when it opens.

M: Right. I’ll set the alarm.

W: Yes, it is.

M: What made you decide to do that?

W: Work, mainly. I'm sure I'll be able to find a job there.

M: You're probably right. But where are you going to live?

W: I hope I’ll find a flat to share with somebody. That way itwill be cheaper.

M: Yes, that's a good idea. Are you taking your dog with you?

W: No, I don't think so. My parents have offered to take care ofhim, and I don't think he'd be happy in the city.

M: You're probably right. But aren't you afraid of moving tosuch a big place, especially after living in a small village?

W: Not really. I think I'll enjoy myself. There's so much to dothere; I expect I won't miss the countryside much and I canalways come back and visit.

M: Well, I just hope you'll invite me to stay when you getsettled.

W: Of course I will.

On June 12th, Peter had a surprise when he woke up in themorning. He found that the floor of his room was flooded.

When he looked out of the window, he saw many cars upsidedown in the street. It was a sad day for Peter's hometown,which is a mountain city. In the twenty-four hours up to noon,nearly seventeen inches of rain fell. Usually about sixteeninches of rainfall in the whole month of June. Roads in thehigh area were washed away. Tons of mud and rocks crasheddown on the houses below. Sixty-four people died in the floodand more than 2,500 people lost their homes. For some timeafter the flood, helicopters continued to rescue people.

Tractors and lorries worked hard to clear away the rocks andearth. Many people sent money and life necessities to thevictims of the flood and helped them rebuild their hometown.
