Not all memories are sweet. Some people spend all their lives trying to forget bad experiences. Violence and traffic accidents can leave people with terrible physical and emotional scars(伤疤). Often they relive(在想像中再体验)these experiences.
Now American researchers think they are close to developing a pill, which help people forget bad memories. The pill is designed to be taken immediately after a frightening experience. They hope it might reduce, or possibly erase(抹去)the effect of painful memories.
In November, experts tested a drug on people in the US and France. The drug stops the body releasing(发放出)chemicals that fix memories in the brain. So far, the research has suggested that only the emotional effects of memories may be reduced, not that the memories are erased.
The research has caused a great deal of argument. Some think it is a bad idea, while others support it. Supporters say it could lead to pills that prevent or treat soldiers’ troubling memories after wars.
They say that there are many people who suffer from terrible memories. “Some memories can ruin people’s lives. They come back to you when you don’t want to have them in a daydream or nightmare. They usually come with very painful emotions,” said Roger Pitman, a professor of psychiatry(精神病学)at Harvard Medical School,“This could relieve(减轻)a lot of that suffering.”
But those who are against the research say that changing memories is very dangerous because memories give us our identity. They also help us avoid the mistakes in the past. “All of us can think of bad events in our lives that were horrible at the time but make us who we are. I am not sure whether we’d want to wipe those memories out.” said Rebecca Dresser, a medical ethicist.

A woman in Japan who had no home sneaked into(潜入)a man’s house and lived without being noticed in his closet for a year. She was arrested after the man found that his food was disappearing and reported it to the police.
Police found the 58-year-old woman Thursday hiding in the top part of the man’s closet and arrested her for getting in without the owner’s permission.
The man had security cameras which sent images(图像)to his cell-phone after becoming confused by food disappearing from his kitchen over the past several months.
One of the cameras on Thursday caught someone moving inside his home after he had left, so he called the police who at first thought it was a thief. However, when they arrived, they found the door locked and all windows closed.
“We searched the house and checked every corner where someone could possibly hide,” Itakura said. “When we opened the closet, we found the woman curled up(卷曲)on her side, feeling nervous and frightened.”
The woman told the police that she had no place to live and first sneaked into the man’s house about a year ago when he left it without locking the door.

Some scientists say that animals in the oceans are increasingly threatened by noise pollution caused by human beings.
The noise that affects sea creatures comes from a number of human activities. It is caused mainly by industrial underwater explosions, ocean drilling, and ship engines. Such noises are added to natural sounds. These sounds include the breaking of ice fields, underwater earthquakes, and sounds made by animals themselves.
Decibels (分贝) measured in water are different from those measured on land. A noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land causes pain to human ears. In water, a decibel level of one hundred and ninety-five would have the same effect.
Some scientists have suggested setting a noise limit of one hundred and twenty decibels in oceans. They have observed that noises at that level can frighten and confuse whales.
A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that louder noises can seriously injure some animals. The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. This seriously affected the whales' ability to exchange information and find their way. Some of the whales even died. The explosions had caused their ears to bleed(流血)and become infected(感染).
Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds are against a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research.
Scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. However, many scientists suspect(怀疑)that noise is a greater danger than they believed. They want to prevent noises from harming creatures in the ocean.
62. According to the passage, which of the following is increasingly dangerous to sea creatures?
A. The noises of human activities. B. The noises made by themselves.
C. The sound of earthquakes. D. The sound of the ice-breaking.
63. Which of the following is discussed in the third paragraph?
A. Different places with different types of noises.
B. The very human ears sensitive to all types of noises.
C. The same noise measured differently on land and in the ocean.
D. The ocean animals' reaction to noises.
64. According to the passage, what will scientists most probably do in the future?
A. They will try their best to decrease noise.
B. They will work hard to cut down noise pollution.
C. They will study the effect of different noises.
D. They will protect animals from harmful noises.
第四部分:书面表达(共三节,满分27分)
第一节 简答题(共3小题;每小题2分,满分6分)
阅读下面短文,根据第65至第67小题的具体要求,简要回答问题,并将答案转写到答题卷上。
What are the situations that make you shy? You're not shy all the time. For example, when you're with your best friend, you're probably very open and comfortable being yourself. Shyness is the effect of feeling insecure(不安全). If you can identify what you're feeling insecure about, you can then take action on it.
Many of us tend to focus on what we're not good at, rather than recognize what we are good at. As a result, we feel awkward around others, because we feel there's nothing impressive about ourselves. It's time to stop selling yourself short and start focusing on your strengths. What are you good at? What are your past achievements? What are things you've done that you are really proud of? Spend some time to recognize them.
Many people worry too much about what others think about them. But the funny thing is, it's just in your mind. Most people are actually too busy to pay attention to what you're doing or not doing, so stop spending time worrying about others’ opinion of you.
Can you think of someone (whether a friend or a famous person) you know who is very confident, assured and outgoing? Use the person as your role model. Whenever you feel shy, ask yourself what that person will do/say in this situation. Then, do that. Soon, it becomes second nature to you to behave in that manner.
Another great way to overcome shyness is to observe how others around you act. Reduce the time you spend worrying about what others think of you and look outward at how others behave themselves socially. What do they say? How do they act? What can you learn from them?
65. According to the passage, what is the reason for shyness? (No more than 3 words)
