Parks provide people with a place to amuse themselves and to escape from their busy lives for a while. Parks not only share this basic purpose, but also they find various ways to meet this need. Some parks are quiet places with trees and lakes. In these parks, people sit chatting, play games, listen to birds’ singing, or just relax a bit. Families come too, to have picnics or have fun together in other ways. It costs little or no money to go to them.

In recent decades, however, many parks have been designed to provide entertainment. We call them theme parks. They are more than amusement parks with rides, such as Ferris wheel, merry-go-round or a roller coaster. They are such huge places that visitors often use shuttles to go around. These new parks have a variety of things to be watched and done. They all charge money for admission, and for the rides and shows in the park. The big companies that own theme parks expect to make a profit not just by the charge for admission, but also by selling souvenirs in their shops and advertising them on television.

Theme parks have a certain idea--- a certain theme---that the whole park is based on. Foe example, a sports theme park will offer visitors to play or watch. Its purpose is to involve visitors in physical exercise and athletic competition. The challenge for the park is to encourage its visitors to buy a popular brand of sports equipment or clothing.

Some are history and cultural theme park. The past can come to life when we see how our ancestors dressed, worked and lived. Others show us how special groups of people dress today, what they eat and what their homes look like. These theme parks also charge for admission and sell food and other items in their souvenir shops.

The oldest theme park in the world id Disneyland, built near Los Angeles, California in 1955. The park is named after Walt Disney, the famous film maker. Disneyland is so different from other parks that it seems like a place of fantasy. Disneyland has exciting rides, castles and visitors have chances to get close to life-size cartoon figures. Model villages of life in the past show visitors how the early settlers in America lived.

Other theme parks include marine (ocean) parks, where visitors can see and swim with dolphins and learn about ocean life. There are also science theme parks where visitors can take an active part in experiments; and there are future parks, where people can go on imaginary trips to space and use advanced computer technique to experience life in the future.
