Zach, Neff, 27-year-old with Down syndrome, hugs most everybody, repeatedly in his class. He tells teachers he loves them.

“I told Zach we are putting him on a hug diet—one to say hello and one to say goodbye,” said Joyce, who helped start a new program at the University of Central Missouri that serves students with mental disabilities. The hope is to improve social skills, like living in the dormitory and going to classes with non-disabled classmates and to help students like Neff be more independent and get better jobs.

College life was largely off-limits for students with such disabilities before, but that’s no longer the case. Students with Down syndrome and other conditions that can result in intellectual disabilities are leaving high school more academically prepared than ever and are ready for the next step: college.

Eight years ago, there were only 4 programs in university that allowed them to experience college life with extra help from tutors. As of last year, there were more than 250 programs across the US.

The college programs for these students vary. Generally the aim is to support the students as they take regular classes with non-disabled students. One program in Idaho offers classes in drama, art and sign language. Students on other campuses can improve their computer skills or take child development classes.

Historically, adults with mental disabilities have been limited to jobs in fast restaurants, cleaning or in so-called “sheltered workshops”, where they work with other disabled people and often earn low wages.

With additional training, they can go on to do everything from being a librarian to doing data-entry work in an office.

Back at the University of Central Missouri, Neff is grateful for it all—new friends, the chance to try out for a school play, review his computer skills and even take a bowling class with non-disabled students.

“It’s an answer to my prayer that I am here,” he said, “I always wanted to do this.”

51. According to the passage, the college programs mainly aim at enabling mentally-disabled students to .

A. improve social skills and live a normal life

D. get academically prepared to enter college

52. The passage indicates that the new program at the University of Central Missouri can teach the mentally-disabled .

A. to operate computers B. to direct school plays

C. to master sign language D. to draw pictures

53. What is likely to be the main idea of the passage?

A. Disabled students shouldn’t be looked down on.

B. All students have equal access to college education.

C. More disabled students should be admitted to universities.

D. More youths with mental disabilities can go to college.

54. Which word can best indicate Neff’s feeling about the new program?

A. Lucky. B. Thankful. C. Content. D. Optimistic.

One day, a young man was cleaning out his late grandfather’s belongings when he came across a bright red envelope. Written on the front were the words, "To my grandson." Recognizing his grandfather's handwriting ,the boy opened the envelope. A letter inside read:

Dear Ronny,

Years ago you came to me for help .You said, "Grandpa, how is it that you've accomplished so much in your life? You're still full of energy, and I'm already tired of struggling. How can I get that same enthusiasm that you've got?"

I didn't know what to say to you then. But knowing my days are numbered, I figure that I owe you an answer. So here is what I believe.

I think a lot of it has to do with how a person looks at things. I call it "keeping your eyes wide open."

First ,realize that life is filled with surprises, but many are good ones .If you don't keep watching for them, you'll miss half the excitement. Expect to be thrilled once in a while ,and you will be.

When you meet up with challenges, welcome them. They'll leave you wiser ,stronger, and more capable than you were the day before .when you make a mistake ,be grateful for the things it taught you . Determine to use that lesson to help you reach your goals.

And always follow the rules. Even the little ones. When you follow the rules, life works. If you think you ever really get by with breaking the rules, you're only fooling yourself.

It's also important to decide exactly what you want. Then keep your mind focused on it, and be prepared to receive it.

But be ready to end up in some new places too. As you grow with the years, you'll be given bigger shoes to fill. So be ready for endings as well as challenging beginnings.

Sometimes we have to be brave enough to move from the familiar to the unfamiliar .Life isn't just reaching peaks, Part of it is moving from one peak to the next .If you rest too long in between, you might be tempted to quit .Leave the past in the past .Climb the next mountain and enjoy the view.

Dump things that weigh you down emotionally and spiritually. When an old resentment, belief, or attitude becomes heavy ,lighten your load. Drop those hurtful attitudes that slow you down and drain your energy.

Remember that your choices will create your successes and your failures. So consider all the pathways ahead, and decide which ones to follow. Then believe in yourself, get up, and get going.

And be sure to take breaks once in a while .They'll give you a renewed commitment to your dreams and a cheerful, healthy perception of the things that matter the most to you .

Most important of all. never give up on yourself. The person that ends up a winner is the one who resolves to win. Give life everything you've got, and life will give its best back to you.

Love always,

Grandpa

She handed me a five-dollar bill through the car window, then turned and walked away. I didn’t know her name, nor where she was going, but I knew I would never forget that lady stranger who generously saved me from a lot of frustration and walking a mile or more to my destination.

That day, my husband, Lea, and I were already half an hour late for an important conference. We had taken the wrong fork on the expressway, and found ourselves stuck in traffic that was backed up for four miles due to a serious accident.

When we finally were able to exit, we tried to find parking lots near the hosting hotel. But, by now, they were all full. Plus, neither of us had brought change; all we had was a twenty-dollar bill. When we did find some space in a lot two blocks away from the conference, we were unable to pay the automated(自动化的)box for parking. So we needed five dollars.

We asked several people approaching the pay box if they could change a twenty.“NO”,“No”were their answers. So, dejected, we walked back to our car, got inside, and started to back out. We were going to look for other parking spots on the street, which would surely have taken us a longer distance away.

Just then, one of the people we had spoken with tapped on the window on the passenger side. It was a medium-sized woman, who was all bundled up (穿得暖暖的)in jacket and scarf, wearing jeans and boots. Surprised, I was unwilling, at first, to roll the window down. What could she possibly want? I lowered the window just enough to hear what the woman had to say. Through the cracked window, she shoved a five-dollar bill.“I don’t have change,”she said, “but here is an extra five-dollar bill. Use it to pay for your parking spot.”

I was floored! Was this woman, whom I’d never seen before, actually giving me this much money? Yes, that was exactly what she was doing! She wouldn’t take the check I offered her for the cash. She just walked away.

B. She didn’t know what the woman would do.

C. She didn’t expect to talk to a stranger.

D. She feared the woman would beg for money.
