Almost everyone has read about the Taj Mahal in India. It is one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. Over three hundred years ago, Shah Jehan built the Taj Mahal as a tomb for his wife. Shah Jehan wanted his wife’s tomb to be perfect. He didn’t care about time or money. He brought together workmen from all Asia. Altogether, over 20,000 men worked on the building, and it took them over seventeen years to build it.

The building rests upon a platform of red sandstones. Four thin white towers rise from the cor -ners of the platform. A large dome(圆顶)rests from the center of the building. Around this large dome there are four small ones.

The building is made of fine white coloured marbles (大理石). It has eight sides and many arches(拱门). There is an open corridor(走 廊)just inside the outer walls. From this corridor, the visitors look through marble screens(屏风) to a central room. The bodies of Shah Jehan and his wife lie in a tomb below this room.

A beautiful garden surrounds the Taj Mahal. The green trees make the marble look even white. In front of the main entrance to the building there is a long, narrow pool. If you look in this pool, you can see all the beauty of the Taj Mahal in the reflection(倒影)from water.

Many people think the Taj Mahal is most beautiful at sunset. Then the marble picks up the color of the sunset, and the building and its reflection in the pool gleam like red jewels.

My Grandfather had a basketball hoop set up in his backyard and when I came over we would always play a game of 21. The way it was scored was if you made a basket it was worth 2 points and then you could shoot free throws(罚球) for one point a piece until you miss. As I got older, the basketball games became more competitive but he would never just let me win.

Then one day when I was about 12 years old I finally did it! I beat him at a game of 21. After all those years of playing I finally won. Then a couple of days later I called to see if he would be home so I could come by and visit and then took the bus across town to his house to see him. I couldn’t wait to play him again at 21. All those years of losing to him and now I knew I can beat him.

I arrived at his house and was greeted by my Grandmother and asked, “ Where’s Grandpa?” As she turned to point out in the backyard I could see my Grandfather. He was practicing shooting free throws. My 70-year-old Grandfather was practicing shooting free throws.

I then went out in the backyard. So we started to play our usual game of 21 and I made the first basket for 2 points and then made only one free throw. My grandfather then made a basket and proceeded to make 19 free throws in a row and beat me 21-3. Game over!

I learned a lot of lessons from my grandfather over the years but none that stands out like the lesson I received in his backyard that day. While he has since passed on, his competitive spirit still lives on through me today.

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening

By Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know

His house is in the village though;

He will not see me stopping here

To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer(奇怪的)

To stop without a farmhouse near

Between the woods and frozen lake

The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness(马笼头) bells a shake

To ask if there is some mistake.

The only other sound’s the sweep

Of easy wind and downy flake(鹅毛般的雪花).

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.

But I have promises to keep,

And miles to go before I sleep,

And miles to go before I sleep.

Healthy people with stressful jobs who work long hours but get little satisfaction from what they do have twice the risk of dying from heart disease as satisfied employees, according to a study. Job stress has been known to cause heart problems in people who already have cardiovascular disease (心血管病). Finnish scientists have now shown that even in healthy people the pressures of work can take their toll. High blood pressure, lack of exercise, smoking and being overweight contribute to heart disease—a leading killer in many industrialized countries.

But Mika Kivimaki, of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health, and his colleagues, who studied the medical histories of 812 healthy Finnish men and women in a metal industry company over 25 years, said job stress also plays an important role.

Workers who had the highest job-related stress levels at the start of the study were more than twice as likely to die of heart disease, according to the study published in The British Medical Journal. Work stress involves too much work as well as a lack of satisfaction and feeling undervalued and unappreciated. Many people work long hours but if the effort is rewarding the stress is minimized.

The British Heart Foundation said the results support earlier research showing that people in jobs with low control, such as manual(体力的) workers, could be as great risk of heart disease than other employees. “ It is advisable for people o try to minimize levels of stress at work and for employees to allow people to have more control at work and to be rewarded for their successes,” the foundation said in a statement.
