A
One afternoon, when I was cleaning the garage in our new house, I noticed a piece of carpet sticking out of the ceiling. I fetched a ladder and reached the ceiling. There I saw a metal container that I recognized as a World War II ammo (弹药) box; my grandfather used to store tools in ammo boxes on his farm. I opened the box and was surprised at what I saw —several rolls of money tied up in orange thread. I found $800. My God! I found another seven boxes, plus two big black bags also full of rolls of money. In all, about $45,000.
My first thought was that this was a blessing from God. But I knew I should return the money to the former owner, David, instead of satisfying all my desires. So I called him and asked him to drop by.
However, he was shocked not about the money but about what I did. He said he had recently inherited (继承) the house and it must have been his dad who had hidden the money. What made him do it? I think he did it for his children.
There were balls of that orange thread still hanging on the wall of the garage when we moved in. I used them to tie up Christmas presents last year for my kids. I hope it reminded my kids of the gift greater than money that my wife and I gave them — the honesty.

Here are some tips on how to keep you, your belongings (财物) and your money safe during travel. After all, it’d be a shame to spend all the time and research finding the best price for your trip, only to lose your cash and credit cards to a thief.
★ Don’t show others that you are not a native.
You’re a tourist. You know that, but you don’t want everybody else to know that. Don’t unfold your big map on a busy corner. Don’t ask strangers on the street for directions. Learn your route ahead of time, and step into a business for directions whenever possible. Avoid flashing your guidebook around, or publicly referring to your language dictionary when traveling abroad.
★ Keep your friends close and your money closer.
A lone traveler equals easy pickings for an experienced criminal. If you are traveling alone, try to hide that fact. Stick with groups whenever possible and keep information-sharing with taxi drivers and the like to a minimum (最少量).
Another thing you don’t want to advertise: where you keep your money. A fanny pack (腰包) may be convenient, but it means “I’m not from around here!” If you have a purse, keep it close to your body, preferably under an item of clothing like a jacket or sweater so that thieves can’t steal it. Be sure your wallet is in a securely fastened pocket. Or go like 007 with a hidden money belt. How cool is that?
★ Be careful, even in your hotel room.
Never ever blindly answer a knock at your door. If the knocker identifies (确认) himself as a hotel employee, call the front desk to confirm. Always make sure your hotel door completely closes.
Don’t leave your valuables lying around when you leave for the day.
43. Why shouldn’t tourists wear a fanny pack?
A. Because it can’t hide money.
B. Because it is not convenient.
C. Because it shows that they are not local.
D. Because it can’t be hidden under their jacket.
44. Why does the author mention 007’s money belt?
A. To persuade readers to learn from 007.
B. To persuade readers to buy the belt worn by 007.
C. To persuade readers to hide money in their belt.
D. To persuade readers not to show others where they keep money.
45. This text is intended for .
A. thieves B. tourists
C. hotel managers D. language learners
46. We can learn from the text that .
A. when traveling abroad, we shouldn’t open our language dictionary in public
B. we can leave our money at the hotel when traveling abroad
C. we should go to open the door if we hear a knock at it
D. we should not talk with taxi drivers abroad

Fast-food giant, McDonald’s, said that they would cut out excess calories in their kids’ menu choices. McDonald’s will reduce the amount of chips (炸薯条) in Happy Meals and will also include sliced apple “dippers” in every meal. McDonald’s says it will still include the ever-popular toys with each meal.
“We are going to pay attention to how we can introduce more food groups such as fruits, vegetables and whole grains,” said Cindy Goody, McDonald’s senior director of nutrition.
After getting much of the blame for childhood obesity, fast-food chains, especially McDonald’s, began selling more nutritious menu items such as oatmeal (燕麦粥) and salads. But the restaurant was most blamed for its marketing (市场营销) which is often aimed at young children. Some cities, such as San Francisco, California, have banned (禁止) toys from all kids’ meals that didn’t meet strict nutritional rules for fat, salt and sugar content because the prizes attracted more children to the fast food.
McDonald’s felt public pressure to change their offerings. The company has reduced chips in every meal. This decreases calorie content by about 20 percent, which means a new Happy Meal is less than 600 calories. In the past, the unhealthiest Happy Meal consisted of a cheeseburger, chips and one percent chocolate milk, which contained 700 calories and 27 grams of fat.
“It’s a good first step,” said Kelle Louailler, executive director of Corporate Accountability International. His group watches over companies. “However, we have yet to focus on the problem: its brand marketing to kids. And so long as burgers, chips and soda offerings to kids, along with toys, remain central to that brand, health professionals (专家) will continue to call for the marketing to stop.”
47. The underlined word “excess” in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to “ ”.
A. enough B. extra
C. entire D. expensive
48. We can infer from the text that in McDonald’s the apple “dippers” is a kind of food that .
A. is most popular with customers B. contains apples and whole grains

A. the high prices of fruits and vegetables

D. some strict nutritional rules
50. What does the fourth paragraph mainly tell us?

Bee Gees star Robin Gibb, who awoke from a coma (昏迷) last month, has a “50-50” chance of recovering from the colon cancer that may have spread to his liver, a friend of the singer told British newspaper The Telegraph.
Jim Dooley, former lead singer of British family band The Dooleys and one of Gibb’s friends, told the paper, “It’s hard to say whether he could come through this but his wife Dwina is a wonderful woman and she is giving him all the love and TLC she can give.”
Dooley told the paper that Gibb, 62, was unable to speak due to a tracheotomy (气管切开术) and was communicating by blinking (眨眼).
“Dwina has said that because he has spent so long in a coma, there are a lot of things he will have to learn to do again if he comes through it. He will have to relearn how to walk,” Dooley said. “The plan is to get his strength up so he can continue chemotherapy (化疗) treatment for his cancer.”
It’s said that Pope (教皇) Benedict XVI is sending a special blessing for Gibb.
Dooley and Gibb have been working together for four years to raise money for the Bomber Command Memorial in London.
Gibb entered a London hospital after catching pneumonia and was in a coma for nine days. His doctor credited the singer’s iron will and deep reserves of physical strength with helping him wake from the coma but said how the disease would develop was still uncertain.
Gibb founded the Bee Gees with his twin brother, Maurice, and older brother, Barry, in the late 1950s and went on to sell an estimated 200 million records. The group’s 1970s hit songs include “Night Fever”, “Tragedy” and “How Deep Is Your Love”.

Green labels can help you choose products that are less harmful to the environment or are made in a way that treats people more fairly. Find out the difference between a green label and a green claim — and learn what to do if either is misleading or untrue.
What is a green label?
A green label is a symbol that shows a product is less damaging to the environment or to the people making it than other similar products. Some examples of commonly used green labels include Fairtrade, Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) and the fuel economy label.
There are green labels for almost every kind of product, from paper to paints, and from cut flowers to cutlery (餐具). You can use them to help you choose products that:
● use less energy or water
● are made from recycled materials
● are kinder to wildlife and the natural world
● help people in developing countries, by making sure workers and producers are treated fairly
What is a green claim?
As well as organized labeling schemes, manufacturers and retailers (零售商) can make their own environmental claims for their products.
Some claims give useful information on how a product is made or the best way to deal with it. Others may mislead customers. Phrases like “environmentally friendly” are meaningless on their own, so look for an explanation of exactly what is being done to .
Inaccurate green labels or claims: what to do
If you think a green label or claim is untrue or misleading, you have a number of options.
Contact the manufacturer or retailer.
If you find a green claim unclear or just want to know more, start by asking the retailer or manufacturer. You can try asking:
● for an explanation of how the product is greener
● whether they use the Green Claims Code

57. Fill in the blank in the passage with proper words. (no more than 5 words)
