At a recent class, yoga instructor Hagen taught several facial exercises designed to build up facial muscles. Some women practise moves including "The Lion" , showing the tongue hanging out and eyes rolled up.Hagen encourages class members to hold the position for 60 seconds, joking."You can do this any time.It really helps you get a seat on the train."

Hagen recently published a book—The Yoga Face: Remove Wrinkles (皱纹) with the Ultimate Natural Facelift. She developed a workshop using facial yoga because women wanted to look their best.

Facial muscles become weak and flabby (松驰的) and need regular exercise to reduce wrinkles.Besides "The Lion", other exercises include "Satchmo" .in which the cheeks are blown out Louis Armstrong-style, and "Marilyn", in which attractive kisses are blown to strengthen mouth muscles for full and firm lips.

Hagen recommends facial yoga for those wanting to find outer and inner beauty, saying, "The emotional aspect is just as important as the physiological (生理学的)."

But she doesn't rule out plastic surgery or Botox."I don' t rule it out for myself. One day I may feel like I need that. But regardless of that, maintaining elasticity (弹性的) is extremely important, especially if you have had Botox and plastic surgery," she said.

While making faces in front of strangers might frighten some, those who attended the class thought it the perfect way to fight against busy New York lifestyles." Working in New York is very stressful." Kathy Healey said, "It's a perfect way to end the week."

C6 [2013·重庆卷] C

Almost every machine with moving parts has wheels, yet no one knows exactly when the first wheel was invented or what it was used for.We do know, however, that they existed over 5,500 years ago in ancient Asia.

The oldest known transport wheel was discovered in 2002 in Slovenia. It is over 5,100 years old.Evidence suggests that wheels for transport didn't become popular for a while, though. This could be because animals did a perfectly good job of carrying farming tools and humans around.

But it could also be because of a difficult situation. While wheels need to roll on smooth surfaces, roads with smooth surfaces weren't going to be constructed until there was plenty of demand for them.Eventually, road surfaces did become smoother, but this difficult situation appeared again a few centuries later. There had been no important changes in wheel and vehicle design before the arrival of modern road design.

In the mid-1700s,a Frenchman came up with a new design of road—a base layer (层)of large stones covered with  a thin layer of smaller stones.A Scotsman improved on this design in the 1820s and a strong, lasting road surface became a reality. At around the same time, metal hubs(the central part of a wheel) came into being, followed by the pneumatic tyre(充气轮胎) in 1846. Alloy wheels were invented in 1967, sixty years after the appearance of tarmacked roads(柏油路).As wheel design took off, vehicles got faster and faster.

64.What might explain why transport wheels didn't become popular for some time?

A.Few knew how to use transport wheels.

B.Humans carried farming tools just as well.

C.Animals were a good means of transport.

D.The existence of transport wheels was not known.

65.What do we know about road design from the passage?

A.It was easier than wheel design.

B.It improved after big changes in vehicle design.

C.It was promoted by fast-moving vehicles.

D.It provided conditions for wheel design to develop.

66.How is the last paragraph mainly developed?

A.By giving examples.

B.By making comparisons.

C.By following time order.

D.By making classifications.

67.What is the passage mainly about?

A.The beginning of road design.

B.The development of transport wheels.

C.The history of public transport.

D.The invention of fast-moving vehicles.

C6 [2013·重庆卷] D

Not all bodies of water are so evidently alive as the Atlantic Ocean, an S-shaped body of water covering 33 million square miles. The Atlantic has, in a sense, replaced the Mediterranean as the inland sea of Western civilization.Unlike real inland seas, which seem strangely still, the Atlantic is rich in oceanic liveliness. It is perhaps not surprising that its vitality has been much written about by ancient poets.

“Storm at Sea”, a short poem written around 700, is generally regarded as one of mankind's earliest artistic representations of the Atlantic.

When the wind is from the west

All the waves that cannot rest

To the east must thunder on

Where the bright tree of the sun

Is rooted in the ocean's breast.

As the poem suggests, the Atlantic is never dead and dull.It is an ocean that moves, impressively and endlessly. It makes all kinds of noise—it is forever thundering, boiling, crashing, and whistling.

It is easy to imagine the Atlantic trying to draw breath—perhaps not so noticeably out in mid-ocean,but where it meets land, its waters bathing up and down a sandy beach. It mimics(模仿)nearly perfectly the steady breathing of a living creature. It is filled with symbiotic existences, too; unimaginable quantities of creatures, little and large alike, mix within its depths in a kind of oceanic harmony, giving to the waters a feeling of heartbeat, a kind of sub-ocean vitality. And it has a psychology. It has personalities: sometimes peaceful and pleasant, on rare occasions rough and wild; always it is strong and striking.

68.Unlike real inland seas, the Atlantic Ocean is ________.

A.always energetic

B.lacking in liveliness

C.shaped like a square

D.favored by ancient poets

69.What is the purpose of using the poem “Storm at Sea” in the passage?

A.To describe the movement of the waves.

B.To show the strength of the storm.

C.To represent the power of the ocean.

D.To prove the vastness of the sea.

70.What does the underlined word “symbiotic” mean?

A.Living together.

B.Growing fast.

C.Moving harmoniously.

D.Breathing peacefully.

71.In the last paragraph, the Atlantic is compared to ________.

A.a beautiful and poetic place

B.a flesh and blood person

C.a wonderful world

D.a lovely animal

For more than twenty years scientists have been searching for signs of life on other planets. Most of these searches have been done over the radio. The hope is that someone in outer space may he trying to get in touch with us.Scientists also have sent radio and television messages on spaceships traveling through space, on the chance that someone may be receptive to such messages.

Scientists are using powerful radio telescopes (望远镜) to listen to signals from about 1,000 stars, all within 100 light years of earth. In addition, they will scan (扫视) the entire sky to "listen" for radio messages from more distant stars.Using a computer, they will be able to monitor more than eight channels at one time.Scientists are looking for any signal they stands out from the hack-ground noise.

Of the 200 billion stars in the Milky Way galaxy (银河星系), scientists find that five percent are like our sun.Perhaps half of them have a planet like our earth.Such a planet would be a reasonable distance from the star for temperatures to be right for the evolution of life.Based on the inhabitable( that can be lived in) planets in our galaxy, most scientists agree that chances are likely that one or more of these planets support some life.

However, many scientists wonder whether intelligent life exists on other planets. Some believe that twenty years of searching without any intelligible messages shows that no one is out there. They say that the evolution of intelligence comparable to ours is unlikely.

Other scientists believe that our search hasn't been long enough to rule out the possibility that intelligent life exists in our galaxy.Although our sun family is only about five billion years old, our galaxy is about 20 billion years old.In that time, some scientists think it is likely that civilization (文明)much more advanced than ours have developed.Perhaps these civilizations send us no signals; perhaps we have not recognized the signals they have sent us.If we hope to find intelligent life, these scientists believe that we have to keep looking.

53.According to the passage, how many planets in our galaxy might be inhabitable?

A.5 billion.        B.10 billion. C.15 billion.      D.200 billion

54.The first paragraph in this passage is mainly about ______.

A.how scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets

B.why scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets

C.where scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets

D.when scientists are looking for signs of life on other planets

55.The underlined word "monitor" in the passage means "______".

A.find           B.follow     C.check   D.form

56.Which of these statements is true based on the information in the passage?

A.The earth is one of the oldest planets in our galaxy.

B.Most scientists believe that there is intelligent life on other planets.

C.Scientists are trying different ways to find signs of life on other planets.

D.Scientists don' t believe that there might be life on other planets.

One evening I went out and left my 17-year-old son in charge of his 8-year-old brother and 4-year-old sister. On this occasion, the chore (烦人的事) was made less troublesome by the presence of his girlfriend. I left with complete confidence that the older children would do a wonderful job of babysitting the younger children and the younger children would do a wonderful job of accompanying the older ones. Later, I discovered that complete confidence was the last thing I should have left home with.

I had decided to return home earlier than planned so that my son and his girlfriend could go out. I called home with this happy news. But instead of hearing his cheerful, thankful voice on the other end of the line, all I heard was the sound of a telephone ringing.

It was, I should point out, after 10 p.m., when the two younger children should have been in bed, and when the two older children should have been answering the phone. “I’ll give him a lesson,” I said. I decided they must be outside. Why they might be outside at 10:30 on a wintry night I had no idea, but it was the only explanation I could come up with.

Finally, in desperation, I called his girlfriend’s house. After what seemed like countless rings, his girlfriend answered. “Yes,” she said brightly, “He’s right here.”

He came on the phone. I was not my usual calm, rational self. After all, one of the rules of survival (生存) for modern parents is that you can’t trust modern teenagers. “Where are the children?” I said. He said they were with him. They had done nothing wrong. My son had taken the younger children over to his girlfriend’s house just for ice cream and cake. This was too wholesome (有益的) to be believed. Well, it turns out that I shouldn’t have believed it. It was only part of the truth.

The following Saturday evening we were at my parents’ home, celebrating my birthday. My oldest son gave me the children’s gifts. Mounted and framed (给……装框) were a series of lovely color photographs of my children, dressed in their best clothes, and wearing their most wonderful expressions. They are pictures to treasure a lifetime, all taken by the father of my son’s girlfriend.

That was the most precious gift of all.

41. The author went out and left her eldest son in charge of the younger children because ______.

A. she knew that his girlfriend was a good baby-sitter

B. she could not find a baby-sitter on that winter night

C. the older children and the younger ones would get along well

D. she believed he was old enough to take care of the younger ones

42. Shortly after the author left home one evening, she discovered that ______.

A. she should have taken the children along with her

B. she shouldn’t have completely trusted her son

C. her son had left home with his girlfriend

D. her son had brought his girlfriend home

43. The underlined sentence in paragraph 5 implies that the children not only enjoyed ice-cream but also ______.

A. had a birthday party    B. framed some photographs

C. had their pictures taken    D. showed off their best clothes

44. Which of the following possible titles best expresses the main idea of this text?

A. A Precious Birthday Gift    B. Modern Teenagers

C. Mother and Children    D. An Evening Out
