It was another rainy day, it had stopped raining but the ground was still wet, with this remarkable smell of freshness, I was in the car with my friend, and ahead of us was a pitiful-looking old man, with a walking stick in his hand as it seemed he was having a hard time standing up or barely doing any effort. I have always had a weakness for old people; they break my heart, especially the ones begging on the streets, or selling flowers, I feel sad for them, having to be on the streets instead of being taken care of by their families or the government.
There was a car in front of us before we reach next to him. I had prepared money in my hand to give it to him, and I was looking at the car in front of us when the driver took a bill of money and threw it off the window—he threw it in the face of the old man and it fell on the ground, in a wet spot. The old man looked at the bill with a sad look, knowing it would take him an enormous effort to pick it up and he was hardly standing up, so I opened the car door, ran to him as he was bending to pick it up, took it, wiped it with my jeans since it was almost wet, gave it to him and gave him the money I had prepared for him.
The look on his face when he saw me doing that was the most rewarding look anyone has ever given me. He was shocked, and started thanking me for what I did and asking God to bless me, but I couldn’t hear a word of what he was saying, I couldn’t look him in the eye, how can someone so sweet like him with a kind and gentle look be left on the streets?
Helping him out surely made his day, but what he didn’t know is that he affected me in a way he could never imagine—I still think about him very often, and I just hope everyone will look at old people the way I do.

A newly discovered planet looks just right for life as we know it, according to an international group of astronomers. Orbiting a star about 500 light-years away, the planet called Kepler-186f is about the same size as Earth. It orbits its star at the right distance for liquid water on the surface. That is a necessary condition for life as we know it.
But it is not exactly like Earth, NASA planetary scientist Elisa Quintana said. “It’s more of an Earth’s cousin. It’s not an Earth’s twin. It shares the same characteristics as Earth, but their parent stars are very different,” said Quintana.
Kepler-186f orbits a star that is smaller and cooler than our sun. But, writing in the journal Science, the astronomers say the planet appears to be a closer relative than most of the hundreds of others discovered so far. Some are massive gas-covered giants with thick, crushing atmospheres. Others orbit too close to their stars and are too hot for life.
Two planets discovered last year are in the right orbit and might be good candidates for life, Quintana says, but they are a bit bigger than Earth. “For the first time, we can actually say we now have a planet that is both Earth-sized and orbits in its star’s habitable zone,” she said.
It may be the first time, but it probably is not the last, says Massachusetts Institute of Technology astrophysicist Sara Seager. “We’ve been waiting decades to understand how common habitable planets might be, and it’s looking like they’re really common. And this gives us excitement and motivation to take the next step,” said Seager.
The next step would be to look for signs of life in the atmospheres of these distant worlds. That would take a more sophisticated (高端的;复杂的) space telescope. But budget cuts threaten that mission, says University of California at Los Angeles astrophysicist Ben Zuckerman. “In principle, we could do this in the next few decades. But in practice, because there’s no money, it’s not gonna happen. It’s not gonna happen in my lifetime, for example.”
Leaving earthbound concerns behind, NASA’s Elisa Quintana believes that when the next-generation space telescope is launched, it will find that we are not alone in the universe.
63. What does the underlined word “That” (Paragraph 1) refer to?
A. The right distance. B. Liquid water. C. The right size. D. A star.
64. According to Elisa Quintana, Kepler-186f ______.
A. is more of an Earth’s cousin than an Earth’s twin
B. has a lot in common with Earth, including their parent stars
C. is a lot bigger than Earth
D. is smaller and cooler than our sun
65. Ben Zuckerman and Elisa Quintana would probably agree that ______.
A. they can continue their research without worrying about money
B. it is the last time that they have discovered such a planet
C. a sophisticated space telescope plays an important role in their research
D. Earth is the only planet where we can find signs of life
66. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Where there is water, there is life B. A planet exactly like Earth found
C. Life discovered on Kepler-186f D. New Earth-size planet found

People in South Korea who feel they can no longer bear the stress of everyday life now can choose to stay in a prison to relax and think deeply.
In a society where pressure to do well in school and find highly-paid jobs is intense, a former lawyer came up with an extreme relaxation idea. Kwon Yong-seok created the “Prison Inside Me”—a stress-reduction center with a punishment theme. People come here to cut themselves off from the outside world and pay to be kept in 60-square-foot (5.6-square-meter) cells (囚室).
Located on the outskirts of Hongcheon, about 58 miles (93 km) northeast of Seoul, “Prison Inside Me” came to life after Mr. Kwon voluntarily asked to spend time behind bars for “healing reasons,” but his request was turned down. “I didn’t know how to stop working back then,” he said. “I felt like I was being swept away against my will, and it seemed I couldn’t control my own life.” So, Kwon and his wife Roh Ji-hyang decided to take matters into their own hands, and designed and built a prison-like spiritual center. The construction was completed in June last year and cost about 2 billion won ($19 million).
The facility includes 28 cells, furnished with only a toilet, a sink and a small table, where guests can spend time alone, thinking about life and enjoying private thinking periods. Moreover, guests can also join group thinking periods in the hall, where they are given instructions on how to free themselves from what Mr. Kwon calls the “inner prison” to find inner peace.
According to the Wall Street Journal, hundreds of stressed South Koreans are checking in at the stress-reduction facility to think about their lives and regain control of it. A two-night stay at “Prison Inside Me” costs 150,000 won ($146).
Mr. Kwon and his wife explained that at the beginning they had a different plan for the “relaxation center,” and imagined a longer stay for their guests, but, given that people weren’t able to take more time off, they had to reduce the length of stays to just two days.
Park Woo-sub, a guest at “Prison Inside Me,” said the experience helped him a lot. “This is my third time in prison. Being kept in a prison makes me hard to breathe, but it also offers time to focus only on me and spend some quiet time with myself.”
Others said the experience would have been more helpful if the conditions had been poorer, like in a real prison.
67. Paragraph 3 mainly tells us ______.
A. where “Prison Inside Me” is located B. what people can do in “Prison Inside Me”
C. how “Prison Inside Me” came into being D. when “Prison Inside Me” was completed
68. From the passage, we can infer that ______.

B. Mr. Kwon had intended to let guests stay at “Prison Inside Me” for over two days
C. most people in South Korea can not afford to stay at “Prison Inside Me”
D. the 28 cells are well furnished, but with no toilets in them
69. We can know from the passage that ______.
A. many people have been kept in such a prison at least three times
B. it is not a good idea for people to focus only on themselves
` C. people find it not difficult to breathe though the prison is small
D. some still felt a bit unsatisfied as the conditions weren’t poor enough
70. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. Many South Koreans voluntarily go to prison to reduce stress.
B. Many South Koreans can hardly bear the stress of daily life.
C. South Koreans should spend more time alone thinking about life.
D. South Koreans have found the best way to deal with everyday pressure.

Why You Should Embrace Your Depression
Depression affects millions of people worldwide, and while some of them suffer from mild and short-lived depression, others suffer from a deep state of depression all the time. While being depressed is certainly a negative thing that can seriously affect your life, it also has its upsides. Here are some reasons why you should embrace your depression—accepting it and realizing its advantages is a big step toward overcoming it!
It’s widely known that some of the world’s greatest writers and painters created their excellent works when they were depressed or deeply hurt. It is almost an unwritten rule of the universe: when you experience a high level of sadness and depression, you tend to create deeply moving things. This is precisely what makes depression such a huge contradictory (自相矛盾的) thing these days, since for some of them depression is often associated with a lack of focus, determination or motivation.
Another common view surrounding depression is that it prevents you from thinking clearly. For some people, however, it actually helps them concentrate and see things in a totally different light. This aspect of depression applies especially if the depression was caused by an extremely upsetting life event, such as the loss of somebody dear to you.
Depression can teach you to find reasons for living, which may sound contradictory, since depression is often associated with a lack of desire to live, but in some cases where a person is so depressed that they only see the world in “black and white,” the depression can help them find reasons for living and going on. Life will try to bring you down more than once, but it is important to stand up more times than you fall down. Depression can help make you look back and see where you may have done wrong, and what you can correct to make things better.
When people are depressed, they tend to believe there is nothing good left in the world. However, it often happens that our friends and family show their true support when we are down and we need them. Depression can be a good test to see who is with you and who will flee at the first sign of weakness. Being depressed means that you will need the moral and emotional support of those close to you—and it will undoubtedly make you cherish your health, your friends and your family. Unfortunately, many of us tend to take these things for granted until it is too late.
Depression is certainly not something one would wish for, but it doesn’t mean that you cannot make something positive out of it. Those suffering from depression should try to keep an open mind and to analyze all the pros and cons of situations objectively, and they might be amazed to see that there are actually several upsides they have never taken into consideration.
