Jill suffered heart problems. In conversation he expressed little joy and it seemed that his life was drawing to a close.

When his heart problems led to operation, Jill went through it successfully, and a full recovery was expected. Within days, however, his heart was not beating properly. Jill was rushed back to operation, but nothing was found to explain the cause of his illness. He died on the operating table on the day before his 48th birthday.

Dr. Bruce Smaller, a psychologist (心理学家), had had many conversations with him, and the more he learned, the stranger he realized Jill's case was. When Jill was a child, his father, a teacher, suffered a heart attack and stayed home to recover. One morning Jill asked his father to look over his homework, promising to come home from school at noon to pick it up. His father agreed, but when Jill returned his father had died. Jill's father was 48.

"I think all his life Jill believed he killed his father," Dr. Smaller says. "He felt that if he had not asked him to look at his homework, his father would have lived. Jill had been troubled by the idea. The operation was the trial(判决) he had expected for forty years." Smaller believes that Jill willed himself not to live to the age of 48.

Jill's case shows the powerful role that attitude (态度) plays on physical health, and that childhood experiences produce far-reaching effect on the health of grown-ups. Although most cases are less direct than Jill's, studies show that childhood events, besides genes, may well cause such midlife diseases as cancer, heart disease and mental illness.

A month after Hurricane Katrina, I returned home in New Orleans. There lay my house, reduced to waist-high ruins, smelly and dirty.

Before the trip, I'd had my car fixed. When the office employee of the garage was writing up the bill, she noticed my Louisiana license plate. "You from New Orleans" she asked. I said I was, "No charge." She said, and firmly shook her head when I reached for my wallet. The next day I went for a haircut, and the same thing happened.

As my wife was studying in Florida, we decided to move there and tried to find a rental house that we could afford while also paying off a mortgage on our ruined house. We looked at many places, but none was satisfactory. We'd began to accept that we'd have to live in extremely reduced circumstances for a while, when I got a very curious e-mail from a James Kennedy in California. He'd read some pieces I'd written about our sufferings for Slate, the online magazine and wanted to give us ("no conditions attached") a new house across the lake from New Orleans.

It sounded too good to be true, but I replied, thanking him for his exceptional generosity, that we had no plan go back. Then a poet at the University of Florida offered to let his house to me. While he went to England on his one-year paid leave. The rent was rather reasonable. I mentioned the poet's offer to James Kennedy, and the next day he sent a check covering our entire rent for eight months.

Throughout this painful experience, the kindness of strangers has done much to bring back my faith in humanity. It's almost worth losing you worldly possessions to be reminded that people really when given half a chance.

The most important use of drifting (漂流) bottles is to find ocean currents. When the position and direction of currents are known, ships can use the forward movement of a current or stay away from currents that would carry them off their course. Benjamin Franklin was one of the first to use bottles in the study of currents. He wondered why British ships needed a week or two longer than U.S. ships needed in order to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Franklin thought the Gulf Stream might explain this difference.

Franklin talked with captains of U.S. ships. He found that they knew each turn of the Gulf Stream. They used the current in every possible way. From his talks with the captains,Franklin made his first map of the Gulf Stream. Then he checked his map by using sealed (密封的) bottles. The map that he finally made is still used, with only a few changes, today.

Laws that would have ensured pupils from five to 16 received a full financial education got lost in the ‘wash up’. An application is calling on the next government to bring it back.

At school the children are taught to add up and subtract(减法) but, extraordinarily, are not routinely shown how to open a bank account — let alone how to manage their finances in an increasingly complex and demanding world.

Today the parenting website Mumsnet and the consumer campaigner Martin Lewis have joined forces to launch an online application to make financial education a compulsory element of the school curriculum in England. Children from five to 16 should be taught about everything from pocket money to pensions, they say. And that was exactly the plan preserved in the Children, Schools and Families bill that was shelved by the government in the so-called “wash-up” earlier this month — the rush to legislation before parliament was dismissed. Consumer and parent groups believe financial education has always been one of the most frustrating omissions of the curriculum.

As the Personal Finance Education Group (Pfeg) points out, the good habits of young children do not last long. Over 75% of seven- to 11-year-olds are savers but by the time they get to 17, over half of them are in debt to family and friends. By this age, 26% see a credit card or overdraft(透支) as a way of extending their spending power. Pfeg predicts that these young people will “find it much harder to avoid the serious unexpected dangers that have befallen many of their parents' generation unless they receive good quality financial education while at school.”

The UK has been in the worst financial recession(衰退)for generations. It does seem odd that — unless parents step in — young people are left in the dark until they are cruelly introduced to the world of debt when they turn up at university. In a recent poll of over 8,000 people, 97% supported financial education in schools, while 3% said it was a job for parents.

63. The passage is mainly about _____________.

A. how to manage school lessons B. how to deal with the financial crisis

C. teaching young people about money D. teaching students how to study effectively

64. It can be inferred from the first two paragraphs that __________.

A. the author complains about the school education

D. laws on financial education have been effectively carried out

65. According to Pfeg, ___________.

A. it is easy to keep good habits long

B. teenagers spend their money as planned

C. parents are willing to pay the debt for their kids

D. it will be in trouble if the teenagers are left alone

66. A poll is mentioned to ___________.

A. stress the necessity of the curriculum reform

B. show the seriousness of the financial recession

C. make the readers aware of burden of the parents

D. illustrate some people are strongly against the proposal

How men first learned to invent words is unknown, in other words, the origin of language is a mystery. All we really know is that men, unlike animals, somehow invented certain sounds to express thoughts and feelings, actions and things, so that they could communicate with each other; and that later they agreed upon certain signs, called letters, which could be combined to represent those sounds and which could be written down. Those sounds, whether spoken, or written in letters, we call words.

The power of words, then, lies in their association—the thing they bring up before our minds. Words become filled with meaning for us by experience; and the longer we live, the more certain words recall to us the glad and the sad events of our past; and the more we read and learn, the more the number of words that mean something to us increase.

Great writers are those who not only have great thoughts but also express these thoughts in words which appeal powerfully to our minds and emotions. This charming and telling use of words is what we call literary style. Above all, the real poet is a master of words. He can convey his meaning in words which sing like music, and which by their position and association can move men to tears. We should, therefore, learn to choose our words carefully and use them accurately, or they make our speech silly and vulgar.

67. What is the origin of language?

A. It is unknown. B. It is a matter that is unclear.

C. It is a question difficult to answer. D. It is a problem not yet solved.

68. Which of the following about a real poet is NOT true?

A. He is less than a master of words. B. His style is always charming.

C. His poem can move men to tears. D. He can express his ideas in words that sing like music.

69. Where does the real power of the words come from?

A. From the words themselves. B. From their characteristics.

C. From their peculiarity. D. From their association.

70. What is the main idea of the passage?

A. The importance of choosing words. B. Where the real power of words come from.

C. What great writers are like. D. We should learn to choose words carefully.
