Morgan was born with one kidney(肾) which couldn’t work normally. While getting together with some close friends, Morgan told them about this.

After knowing that he was a match, Perry offered to give his kidney to Morgan. In an email before the surgery (手术), Perry said, “ I have been friends with Morgan since college and seen him go through some hard times.”

Perry did not tell many people about the surgery, just his family.

“I think a lot of people need to see this as an example,” his sister-in-law Sue Volikas said, “It’s important for students to know that they could be called upon at any time and be open and willing.”

However, Perry never acted as if the transplant (移植) was out of the ordinary. “Perry was very calm and relaxed all the time,” Morgan said.

Still, to Perry, the decision just made sense. He said, “I know it is a big surgery, and there are some risks, but if I can help a friend live a healthy life, it is worth it.”

Morgan said that his kidney was working great after the surgery.

Perry and Morgan influenced(影响) not only each other’s lives through this act but also their families and friends. “It’s so great that he did this and that he doesn’t think anything of it. I don’t even know what I would do in that situation,” Perry’s elder sister said. “It makes everyone stop and wonder, ‘Would I do that?’”

Dear Ann Landers,

You may have made plenty of trouble for me and I want you to know it. It’s hard enough to be a step-mother. Now I’ve got double trouble because Ann Landers says, “A high school student should be able to date (和异性约会) if she is dependable (可靠的) and has a sense of responsibility (责任).”

My step-daughter is in high school. She is only 14 but has the body of an 18-year-old. The problem is that she has a mind of a 10-year-old. We've told her no dating in cars until she is 16.

All around here became worse, and worse when your column(专栏)appeared.

Thanks for nothing

Reader From The Old School.

Dear O. S.,

Go back and read my advice again. Then read it to your step-daughter. I said a high school girl who has a quality (品质) of being honest should be allowed to date. According to your letter, that child hasn’t. You are right, Mother. Don’t let her beat you down.

Lots of people are unhappy with their present weight, but most aren't sure how to change it. You may want to look like the models or actors in magazines and on TV, but those goals might not be healthy or realistic (现实的) for you. Being healthy is really about being at a weight that is right for you. The best way to find out if you are at a healthy weight or if you need to lose or gain weight is to talk to a doctor or dietitian(营养学家). If it turns out that you can benefit from weight loss, then you can follow a few of the simple suggestions listed below to get started.

_______________________. Ask your mom or dad to lend help and support and to make lifestyle changes that will benefit the whole family, if possible. Those who have the support of their families tend (倾向于)to have better results with their weight-management programs.

Watch your drinks. It’s amazing how many extra calories can be in the sodas, juices and other drinks that you take in every day. Simply cutting out a can of soda or one sports drink can save you 150 calories or more each day. Slake yourself with water or other sugar-free drinks when you’re thirsty and stay away from sugary juices and sodas.

Stop eating when you’re full. Lots of people eat when they’re full. Try to pay attention as you eat and stop when you are full.

Avoid(避免) diet pills. They can be dangerous to your health; besides, there’s no evidence (证据) that they help keep weight off over the long term.

Get moving. You don’t have to play a team sport or go to the gym. Try different kinds of activities from hiking to cycling, or to dancing until you find what you like.

69. According to the passage, before you decide to lose or gain weight you must know _______.

A. how you will do it B. how long it should last

C. whether you have a healthy weight D. what your realistic goal is

70. Which of the following would be the best to be put in the blank in the second paragraph?

A. Find a partner. B. Make weight loss a family behavior.

C. Don’t give up easily. D. Small changes make a difference.

71. The underlined part ‘Slake yourself’ in the third paragraph means “_______”

A. Stop yourself feeling thirsty. B. Make yourself feel less tired.

C. Make yourself feel comfortable. D. Stop yourself feeling less hungry.

72. We can learn from the passage that _______.

A. exercising too much is harmful to one’s health
