During my visit to China, I stayed in several hotels or guesthouses. I would like to say something about fire regulations(条例) in these hotels.

When I was in Beijing in a hotel I checked the nearest fire escape to my room, as I usually do, I found that on the ground floor, the exit(出口) out of the buildings was chained and locked! If there was a fire, people wouldn’t be able to escape. In some other places, I did not find any notice about the procedures(程序).

In most hotels in my country, there is now a notice on the back of the door of every guestroom. In Japan the porter(门卫)actually points out the escape route when bringing your bag to your room.

I hope Chinese hotels will improve on their safety procedures.

What is America’s number one sport? Can I still say baseball? You could make that statement 30 years ago, but things have changed. Baseball of course has the richest history of all sports. But with the popularity of basketball and American football, there can now be an argument on which sport is American’s number one sport.

Basketball really took a turn in the 1980’s as Magic Johnson and Larry Bird took the NBA to another level. Of course, basketball was already popular and had seen such stars as Jerry West and Dr.J, but the real breakthrough(突破) came in the 1980’s and from there it really took off with Michael Jordan into the 90’s. Basketball has even become very global now as many NBA stars competed in the Olympics and faced no competition. Today, they had better be ready because there are so many talents(天才) in other countries and the competition will be stiff.

Like basketball, American football has always been a favorite of many sports fans and its popularity has grown widely. The ratings(收视率) that Super Bowl Sunday brings are amazing. They have even talked about making Super Bowl Sunday a national holiday.

In the year 2050, basketball and American football will have history like baseball’s rich history and maybe American national sport. They have been trying for years, but it is not going to happen.

So what is American’s number one sport? To me baseball will always be Americans’ hobby --- rich in history and many memories for people of all ages. If you have any comments on this subject, do give your opinions.

Reading can provide lots of fun for children and teens during summer vacation. Children who read during the summer are better prepared for school when they return to classes in the fall. Public libraries throughout Wisconsin will host summer events to encourage children and young adults to include reading in their summer fun.

● All Star Readers

The Milwaukee Public Library will host its 2007 Summer Reading Club for kids from 3 to 18. Signing up starts on June 1 at all Milwaukee public libraries and bookmobile sites.

Children aged 6 to 12 are invited to become “All Star Readers” at the Milwaukee library when they sign up for the Summer Reading Club. Children can score a point by reading 10 books or 1,000 pages. When they reach the reading goal, they will win a bag full of prizes.

● Sparkey Spots the Ball

Children up to 5 years old can join the read-to-me club, “Sparkey Spots the Ball”.
