The summer has seen a series of marine disputes involving China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan and
the Philippines. This week there were more anti-Japanese riots in cities across China because of a dispute over a group of uninhabited islands known to the Japanese as the Senkakus and to the Chinese as the Diaoyu Islands. One Chinese newspaper has helpfully suggested skipping (跳过)the pointless diplomacy(外交) and moving straight to the main
course by serving up Japan with an atom bomb.
The government in Beijing is trying to play down the dispute, aware of the economic interests in keeping the peace. China is re-emerging after what it sees as 150 years of humiliation, surrounded by anxious neighbours, many of them allied to America. In that context, disputes about clumps of rock could become very significant.
Whatever the legality of Japan’s claim to the islands, its roots lie in empire(帝国)-building. China’s leaders now face sharp criticism if they do not fight their country’s corner. A recent poll suggested that over half of China’s citizens thought the next few years would see a “military dispute” wi
th Japan.
The islands matter, therefore, less because of fishing, oil or gas than as counters in the high-stakes game for Asia’s future. Japan, Vietnam and the Philippines fear that if they give in, China will sense weakness and prepare the next demand. China fears that if it fails to press its case, America and others will conclude that they are free to scheme against it.
Asia’s inability to deal with the islands raises doubts about how it would cope with a genuine crisis, on the Korean peninsula, say, or across the Strait of Taiwan. And the tendency for the slightest quarrel to turn into a full-blown conflict presents problems for America, which both aims to reassure China that it welcomes its rise, and also uses the threat of military force to guarantee that the Pacific is worthy of the name.
61. Where is this news review most probably from?
A. China. B. Japan. C. The USA. D. Europe.
62. According to a Chinese newspaper, the best way to deal with the dispute is__________.
A. holding diplomatic talks with the Japanese
B. moving the islands to the mainland of China

D. turning to other countries such as the US for help
63. The most important reason for the dispute about the Diaoyu Islands is that________.
A. the scenery there is so beautiful

D. they greatly affect Asia’s future
64. What do the underlined words in the second paragraph refer to?

Some students get so nervous before a test, they do poorly even if they know the material. Sian Beilock has studied these highly anxious test-takers.[来源:学§科§网]
Sian Beilock: “They start worrying about the consequences. They might even start worrying about whether this exam is going to prevent them from getting into the college they want. And when we worry, it actually uses up attention and memory resources. I talk about it as your cognitive horsepower that you could otherwise be using to focus on the exam.”
Professor Beilock and another researcher, Gerardo Ramirez, have developed a possible solution. Just before an exam, highly anxious test-takers spend ten minutes writing about their worries about the test.
Sian Beilock: “what we think happens is when students put it down on paper , they think about the worst that could happen and they reappraise the situation. They might realize it’s not as had as they might think it was before and, in essence(本质上), it prevents these thoughts from popping up when they’re actually taking a test.”
The researchers tested the idea on a group of twenty anxious college students. They gave them two short math tests. After the first one, they asked the students to either sit quietly or write about their feelings about the upcoming second test.
The researchers added to the pressure. They told the students that those who did well on the second test would get money. They also told them that their performance would affect other students as part of a team effort.
Professor Beilock says those who sat quietly scored an average of twelve percent worse on the second test. But the students who had written about their fears improved their performance by an average of five percent.
Next, the researchers used younger students in a biology class. They told them before final exams either to write about their feelings or to think about things unrelated to the test.
Prefessor Beilock says highly anxious students who did the writing got an average grade of B+, compared to a B- for those who did not.
Sian Beilock: “What we showed is that for students who are highly test-anxious, who’d done our writing intervention, all of a sudden there was no relationship between test anxiety and performance. Those students most likely to worry were performing just as well as their classmates who don’t normally get nervous in these testing situations.”
But what if students do not have a chance to write about their fears immediately before an exam or presentation? Professor Beilock says students can try it themselves at home or in the library and still improve their performance.
66. What may happen if students have the problem of test anxiety?
A. Test anxiety can improve students’ performance to some degree.

Teenagers at one German school are learning how to achieve happiness alongside other traditional subjects such as math and languages.
The class sit in a circle with their eyes shut and they count from one to ten: someone starts, the next voice comes from the far right,a third from the other side.
The aim of the game is to listen for an opportunity to shout out the number without clashing (冲突) with another voice or leaving a pause. On the first try, most of the young Germans try to be first, while a few are too shy to join in,but by the fifth time round, they develop a rhythm. The message: give other people space but also confidently claim your own. This is a requirement for social well-being.
The Willy Hellpach School in Heidelberg is the first in the nation to develop a happiness course. It is intended for students preparing for university entrance exams.
“The course isn’t there to make you happy,”Ernst Fritz-Schubert,the school principal, warned pupils,“but rather to help you discover the ways to become happy.”
Cooking a meal together is one of the class exercises. Improving body language under the guidance of two professional actresses is another.
The course is taught for three periods a week. Despite the happy subject, the pupils themselves insist it is not a laughing matter.
“In the first period,we had each say something positive about another member of the class and about ourselves. No laughing at people,”said Fanny,17.
Research by the school shows it is not the first to start happiness classes: they also exist at some US universities, but are mainly based on positive thinking and using findings from studies of depression.
“That would be too one side for us. We want to show how delicious food or exercise can help, too” the principal said.

What I Hate
I always listen to my friends’problems and try to give them good advice, but there are some things that just get under my skin (让我极不舒服).
My number-one annoyance is my friends who don’t get along with their parents. Left and right I hear “I hate my mom,”“I hate my dad,”“My parents are so stupid,”“They don’t care about me.” I think they don’t know what they’re saying!
What kids need to understand is that regardless of whether you have a boyfriend, girlfriend,or even a best friend, your parents care about you the most. If that’s hard to believe, think about this: How did you get a roof over your head,a bed to sleep in,food to eat,and most of all,a place to call home?
If that’s not enough, let’s continue. Look in your bedroom. Where did you get all that stuff? Your bed,the clothes in the closet, the blankets that keep you warm,or all the nonessentials. I bet most of it came from your parents.
I’m sick of hearing how your parents do “nothing” for you. They probably do more than you do for yourself. Consider that next time you start criticizing your parents, who also gave you life.
So many times I have heard friends complain about their dads. “He is so over-protective — he never lets me do anything.” I simply think,at least________. Think about kids who don’t. My father died in an accident three years ago. I’d always been “daddy’s girl,”which makes things even harder to manage.
So, please stop before you say “I hate”, especially if it's about a parent, and think about those of us who aren't lucky enough to have two caring parents.

Very often you come across an empty classroom with the lights still on. It’s not difficult to find evidence of wasting water,a very serious problem. Additionally, students do not recycle enough, throwing away the soft drink bottles, used exercise papers and books. Worse still, many students still use the non-environmentally friendly lunch boxes, causing the “White Pollution”.
These things should that many students lack the sense of environmental awareness. It’s important to educate students to be more environmentally friendly. At the same time, students can do small things, such as collecting used items for recycling turning off the lights, saving water. Always remember that it’s everyone’s responsibility to protect the environment.
