A Sample Essay
Should China Help Japan
during the Current Earthquake Catastrophe?
Last week, an unprecedented earthquake measuring 9.0 magnitude hit Japan. While many international rescue teams have been arriving in Japan to help the Japanese people, some Chinese people have objected to offering help to Japan because of territorial disputes over the Diaoyu Island. However, such objections are totally mistaken and we should definitely help the Japanese people.
There are several compelling reasons. First, to help a country and its people affected by natural disasters is our moral responsibility that should transcend national disputes. As humans, we should not hesitate to help other human creatures and such humanitarian efforts should be a universal value. Second, in the wake of the Wenchuan earthquake in 2008, the Japanese rescue team was the first to arrive in China to offer humanitarian assistance. The territorial disputes over the Diaoyu Island were going on then, but the Japanese people transcended their narrow national interests to help China. So why can’t we do the same? Finally, in this increasingly globalized world, to help others is literally to help ourselves. According to reports, there are approximately 30,000 Chinese people in the affected areas in Japan and they face the same destiny as the Japanese people. They all deserve our rescue assistance and materials supply.
Those paramount reasons, among others, should fully convince us that providing/furnishing Japan with our assistance is wholly justified. As two neighboring countries, Japan and China have long maintained friendly relations and minor controversies should not prevent us from helping each other, especially in times of crises and common challenges.
