英语中有些词虽然看起来意思相近，但用法却不尽相同，指导并掌握它，提高自己的英语水平。
below, beneath, under, underneath
这些前置词均可表示位置“在……下面”之意。
below : 指位置低于某物或在某物下方，但不一定在正下方，所指范围较宽。
I looked down at the hall below.(我瞧了瞧下面的大厅。)
beneath : 书面用词，指紧挨……之下，其反义词是on。
Shall we rest in the shade beneath these trees.(我们在树下荫凉处休息一下好吗?)
under : 普通用词，与over相对，指在某物的正下方，含垂直在下的意思。
The village nestles under the hill.(那村庄紧靠在山脚下。)
underneath : 书面口语均用，也常与beneath和under换用，但更含遮蔽的意味。
What have you got underneath your shirt?(你的衬衫里面有什么?)
bet, gamble
这两个动词均含有“打赌，赌博”之意。
bet : 指竞赛中的打赌，也指双方对有疑惑之事争执不下的打赌。在口语中，bet作“确信，敢说”解。
I bet you can't do this puzzle.(我敢说, 你解决不了这个难题。)
gamble : 多指投机，为获得某物或牟利而冒大险，含孤注一掷意味。
He gambled his savings to start a small store.(他孤注一掷地用自己的积蓄开了一家小店。)
big, large, great, grand
这些形容词均含“大的”之意。
big : 常用词，使用广泛，较口语化。多指体积、重量或容量等方面的“大”，有时也用于描写抽象之物。
It's the big moment in my life.(这是我一生中的重大时刻。)
large : 普通用词，含义广，指体积、面积、容量、数量以及程度等方面的大，具体或抽象意义均可用。
The houses of the rich are generally larger than those of the poor.(富人的房子一般来说比穷人的房子大。)
great : 普通用词，可指具体东西的“大”，但更常指事物的重要，人的行为、品格的伟大等，带一定的感情色彩。
That great tree takes away all the light.(那棵大树把光线全给遮住了。)
grand : 侧重指盛大、绝大，有气派。
We had a grand view of a sea of clouds when we climbed to the top of the mountain.(当我们爬上了山巅时，我们看到了云海的壮观景象。)
