Honey from the African forest is not only a kind of natural sugar, it is also delicious. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees' nest and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it is difficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper -- a little bird called a honey guide.

The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax(蜡) in the beehives(蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees' nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always fall to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.

Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined (下决心) in its efforts to get it. The birds seem to be able to smell wax from a long distance

away. They will quickly arrive whenever a beekeeper(养蜂者) is taking honey from his beehives, and will even enter churches when beeswax candles are being lit.

29. Why is it difficult to find a wild bees' nest?

A. It's small in size. B. It's hidden in trees.

C. It's covered with wax. D. It's hard to recognize.

30. What do the words "the follower" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

A. A bee. B. A bird. C. A honey seeker(搜索者). D. A beekeeper.

A. it gets its food B. it goes to church

C. it sings in the forest D. it reaches into bees' nests

32. What can be the best title for the text?

Do you want to read magazines while you drive across the state to visit your friends? It seems like dangerous, but, within just eight years, hands-free driving could be realized, thanks to the new "road train" technology (技术) .

A road train consists of a vehicle platoon(一组), in which a group of software-enabled passenger cars follow one lead car driven by a professional (专业的) driver. The following cars will automatically (自动地) adjust (调整) speed and direction to travel safely behind the lead car. It. will allow passengers to read, watch a movie, or have a sleep as their cars travel.

Volvo is leading this technology, and the company said that road trains could be on European roads as early as 2020. To make traveling more enjoyable, the technology would reduce heavy traffic and improve fuel efficiency (效率) . Because the technology depends on software, any car could be "platoon-ready".

So far, Volvo has trialed (试验) a road train with a lead car and a following car in Sweden. It will soon add more cars to the platoon. After that, the company hopes that the technology will be ready to be used on the road.

33. The passage mainly talks about a new _______.

A. book B. magazine C. technology D. road

34. How many drivers does a road train need?

A. None B. One C. Two D. Three

35. For the drivers of the following cars, a road train can be_______.

A. dangerous B. cheap C. useless D. helpful

36. What can we learn from the passage?

A. Anyone can become the driver of the lead car.

B. Volvo doesn't agree with the technology of the road train.

C. The road train can help with the traffic.

D. The speed of following cars will be adjusted by the lead car.

D

Can dogs and cats live in perfect harmony in the same home? People who are thinking about adopting(收养) a dog as a friend for their cats are worried that they will fight. A recent research has found a new recipe (配方) of success. According to the study, if the cat is adopted before the dog, and if they are introduced when still young (less than 6 months for cats, a year for dogs), it is highly possible that the two pets will get along swimmingly. Two-thirds of the homes interviewed reported a positive (积极的) relationship between their cat and dog.

However, it wasn't all sweetness and light. There was a reported coldness between the cat and dog in 25% of the homes, while aggression(侵略) and fighting were observed (观察) in 10% of the homes. One reason for this is probably that some of their body signals were just opposite. For example, when a cat turns its head away it signals aggression, while a dog doing the same signals submission (屈服) .

In homes with cats and dogs living peacefully, researchers observed a surprising behaviour. They are learning how to talk each other's language. It is a surprise that cats can learn how to talk 'dog', and dogs can learn how to talk 'cat'.

What's interesting is that both cats and dogs seem to be cleverer. They can learn how to read each other's body signals, which shows that the two may have more in common than we thought before. Once (一旦) familiar with each other's body language, cats and dogs can play together, greet each other nose to nose, and enjoy sleeping together on the sofa. They can easily share the same water bowl and in some cases groom(梳理)each other.

The significance(意义)of the research on cats and dogs may go beyond pets - to people who don't get along, including neighbors, colleagues (同事) at work, and even world superpowers (超级大国). If cats and dogs can learn to get along, surely people have a good chance.

37. The underlined word "swimmingly" in Paragraph 1 is closest in meaning to_______.

A. early B. angrily C. quickly D. smoothly

38. Some cats and dogs may fight when_______.

A. they are cold to each other

B. they look away from each other

C. they misunderstood each other's signals

D. they are introduced at an early age

39. Paragraph 4 shows that cats and dogs_______.

A. have the same interests

B. are less different than we thought before

C. have the same body language

D. are not as clever as expected

40. What can we human beings learn from cats and dogs?

A. We should learn to live in harmony.

B. We should know more about animals.

C. We should live in peace with animals.

D. We should learn more body languages.
