On March 15, many people in the UK wore a plastic red nose. It wasn’t just for fun. They were also

raising money to fight poverty(贫穷) in the UK and Africa.

This day is called Red Nose Day. It is a huge charity event in the UK every other year. On this day, people do something funny to raise money. A charity is an organization, which tries to support others, help animals or protect the environment. Besides Red Nose Day, there are many other creative ways to help people in need around the world.

Many charity organizations run charity shops in western countries. The shops sell second-hand goods donated by the public, such as books and clothes. For example, the Irish singer Bob Geldof and Scottish musician Midge Ure organized the Live 8 concerts in 2005. The theme was poverty in Africa. There were 10 concerts held in different cities at the same time. Over 1,000 musicians performed to ask people to give their names, which they made into a “Live 8 list”. The list was then presented to world leaders.
