There was a rich merchant who had 4 wives. He loved the 4th wife the most and adorned her with rich robes and treated her to delicacies. He took great care of her and gave her nothing but the best.

He also loved the 3rd wife very much. He’s very proud of her and always wanted to show her off to his friends. However, the merchant is always in great fear that she might run away with some other  men.

He too, loved his 2nd wife. She is a very considerate person, always patient and in fact is the merchant’s confidante. When the merchant faced some problems, he always turned to his 2nd wife and she would always help him out and tide him through difficult times.

Now, the merchant’s 1st wife is a very loyal partner and has made great contributions in maintaining his wealth and business as well as taking care of the household. However, the merchant did not love the first wife and although she loved him deeply, he hardly took notice of her.

One day, the merchant fell ill. Before long, he knew that he was going to die soon. He thought of his luxurious life and told himself, “Now I have 4 wives with me. But when I die, I’ll be alone. How lonely I’ll be!”

Thus, he asked the 4th wife, “I loved you most, endowed you with the finest clothing and showered great care over you. Now that I’m dying, will you follow me and keep me company?”

“No way!” replied the 4th wife and she turned away without another word.

The answer cut like a sharp knife right into the merchant’s heart. The sad merchant then asked the 3rd wife, “I have loved you so much for all my life. Now that I’m dying, will you follow me and keep me company?”

“No!” replied the 3rd wife. “Life is so good over here! I’m going to remarry when you di e!” The merchant’s heart sank and turned cold.

He then asked the 2nd wife, “I’ve always turned to you for help and you’ve always helped me out. Now I need your help again. When I die, will you follow me and keep me company?”

“I’m sorry, I can’t help you out this time!” replied the 2nd wife. “At the very most, I can only send you

to your grave.” The answer came like a bolt of thunder and the merchant was devastated.

Then a voice called out: “I’ll leave with you. I’ll follow you no matter where you go.” The merchant looked up and there was his first wife. She was so skinny, almost like she suffered from malnutrition. Greatly grieved, the merchant said, “I should have taken much better care of you while I could have!”

Actually, we all have 4 wives in our lives.

The 4th wife is our  body. No matter how much time and effort we lavish in making it look good, it’ll leave us when we die.

Our 3rd wife is our possessions, status and wealth. When we die, they all go to others.

The 2nd wife is our family and friends. No matter how close they had been there for us when we’re alive, the furthest they can stay by us is up to the grave.

The 1st wife is in fact our soul, often neglected in our pursuit of material, wealth and sensual pleasure.

Guess what? It is actually the only thing that follows us wherever we go. Perhaps it’s a good idea to cultivate and strengthen it now rather than to wait until we’re on our deathbed to lament.

21. Which wife did the merchant love most?

A. The 1st wife.          B. The 2nd wife.         C. The 3rd wife.         D. The 4th wife.

22. What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 stand for?

A. A confident person.                         B. A female friend.

How do you celebrate New Year’s Day ? If I had to take a guess, you probably celebrate New Year’s Day surrounded by family and friends, enjoying drinks of your choice (probably wine and champagne) and watching the ball drop. If you’re particularly lucky, perhaps you share a kiss with that special someone when the clock hits 00:00am.Have you ever imagined how New Year’s Day would look in another country? Listed below are five of the top ten “Unique New Year Traditions from Around the World.”

1. Breaking Dishes on Neighbor’s Door——Denmark

A strange and weird Danish New Year tradition, depending on how you look at it, is throwing dishes at neighbor’s door. Strangely, this makes them happy instead of annoying them. The family with the tallest tower of broken plates, glasses, cups and other crockery is considered to be the luckiest person because it symbolizes their large amount of loyal friends.

2. Talking to Spirits——Mexico

Talking to spirits is a part of Mexican belief. Mexicans strongly believe that they can communicate with the souls of their dead loved ones. New Year’s Eve is considered the best time to communicate with dead spirits to convey a message or ask for guidance. And this is not done at home on an individual basis but is a legal Mexican practice. Taos Inn, in New Mexico for example, offers 15 minutes session of spiritualism and meditation for $15. Not a bad price for some helpful guidance!

3. Wearing Polka Dots ——Philippines

Imagine streets full of people wearing polka dots and dining room tables full of round shaped food and fruits on one single day of the year. This all actually happens in the Philippines on New Year’s Eve every year. Philippines believe that this will bring them prosperity by associating the round dots to coins and wealth.

4. Burning Scarecrow(稻草人) Dummy——Ecuador

Ecuador has a unique custom of crafting scarecrows and then burning them at midnight. They adorn them and fill the scarecrows with newspapers and pieces of wood. As midnight approaches, everyone gathers outside their home and each family burns their own scarecrow. The tradition says that this destroys all the bad things that took place in the past 12 months. The scarecrow also scares away bad luck, which in turn, fills their new year with luck and happiness.

5. Mistletoe(槲寄生) Leaves Are Placed Under Pillow to Find Husband——Ireland

The single women of Ireland wait desperately for New Year’s Eve because it is the night that can bring them the love of their lives. They place mistletoe leaves under their pillow hoping to catch their future husband. It is also believed in the Irish culture that this act will help them get rid of bad luck.

The world is a large and very different place. Yes, people of all nations may celebrate New Year’s much differently around the world, with different traditions, but there are a lot of general themes to be seen. We all want to start a new, fresh year with renewed enthusiasm and hope no matter what happened during the past year. We all want to be happier, find love, renew friendships increase our wealth and also hope for a little extra luck in the coming new year.

Based on new analysis, we are rapidly approaching major climate change and the effects on society and the environment could be quite severe. Geographers predict that within the next eighty years, current world climate zones could shift and some could completely disappear. Polar regions will get colder while tropical regions will get even hotter, forcing animals to migrate  (迁徙) north.

Climate changes like these could lead to the spread of diseases. Tropical storms and hurricanes will not only increase but may also become more intense. If the changes come too quickly, animal and plant species may not be able to adapt fast enough and could disappear.

According to Science Daily, a new study predicts that by the year 2100, many of today’s familiar climates will be replaced by climates unknown in today’s world. It is urgent that we reduce the risks of these far-reaching consequences for the whole world. The planet itself has been showing signs of change. In 2004, a serious tsunami created by a major earthquake killed thousands in Sumatra and in 2008, thousands died in China because of another severe earthquake. Egypt was hit in 2009 with a major earthquake and Haiti was devastated in 2010 by yet another massive earthquake.

Within just the last few months, new reports from around the world have been coming in and most agree that our climate situation is much worse than previously thought. At this point, it doesn’t matter what is causing it, but rather, what can be done about it. What’s more, our world is getting more and more unstable every year. There is war and threat of war everywhere. Natural disasters are becoming more frequent and serious.

However, other planets are experiencing global warming as well as our own and some scientists believe there may be some connection between this. No one knows anything for sure at this point because there is simply not enough data.

28. What is the major function of paragraph 1?

A. To arouse the reade r’s concern.           B. To introduce the theme of the whole passage.

C. To summarize the whole passage.         D. To state how climate changes.

29. What is the author’s purpose in using the examples of earthquakes?

A. To show major changes are taking place on the planet.

B. To remind people to prevent future earthquakes.

C. To show the damage earthquakes caused.

D. To tell us more earthquakes will happen in the future.

30. Which of the following is NOT true of climate changes’ effects ?

A. Animal and plant species may not be able to adapt fast enough and could disappear.

B. It could lead to the spread of disea ses.

C. Current world climate zones could shift and completely disappear.

D. Natural disasters are becoming more frequent and serious.

31. What can be inferred from the Passage?

A. Animals and plants won’t die out as long as climate changes slowly.

B. There’s enough data for us to predict the future of climate change.

C. The world is getting more unstable because of animal migration.

D. The earth is not the only planet that is experiencing climate change.

D

Students wishing to safeguard their careers against changes in the job market should opt for science rather than arts degrees, according to a survey of undergraduates.

Engineering and chemistry were considered to be the most “future proof”, as they are courses most likely to lead to an enduring and adaptable career.

Students polled by Pearson College were broadly optimistic that their chosen courses would prepare them for a world in which the job market could change dramatically during their working lives.

But opinion was sharply divided over which degrees were best for future-proof careers.

Eighty-two per cent of respondents believed engineering would help develop future-proof skills, with 74 per cent believing the same of chemistry and 73 per cent of computer science.

But just 33 per cent of undergraduates believed history would lead to a future-proof career, and 40 per cent English.

However more than two thirds of students (67 per cent) thought the world of work would be significantly different or completely unrecognizable in 20 years.

The findings, published today, come after Education Secretary Nicky Morgan sparked controversy with clai ms that teenagers should steer clear of the arts and humanities and opt for science or maths subjects if they want to access the widest range of jobs.

She said that in previous decades students would only take maths or science if they wanted to pursue a specific career such as medicine or pharmacy, but nowadays that “couldn’t be further from the truth”.

“If you wanted to do something different, or even if you didn’t know what you wanted to do…then the arts and humanities were what you chose. Because they were useful – we were told – for all kinds of jobs. Of course now we know that couldn’t be further from the truth, that the subjects that keep young people’s options open and unlock doors to all sorts of careers are the STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects. “

She also described maths as ‘the subject that employers value most’ and said that pupils who study A-level maths will earn 10 per cent more over their lifetime.

“These figures show us that too many young people are making choices aged 15 which will hold them back for the rest of their lives.” she said.

32. In order to guarantee your future job, which kind of courses will you choose according to the survey?

A. Engineering or English                  B. History or Maths

C. Maths or Art                           D. Engineering or Chemistry

33. What’s the students’ attitude towards their chosen courses?

A. Doubtful         B. Worried           C. Optimistic          D. Objective

34. How do you understand the underlined words?

A. It is far away from the truth.               B. It’s to the truth.

C. It couldn’t be closer to the truth            D. It reflects the truth.

35. What did Nicky Morgan indicate in her claim?

A. If you want to do some different, the arts and humanities are what you choose now.

B. STEM subjects can make young people choose their future jobs freely.

C. At college, young people should make choices for their lives.

D. Maths and science are considered to be the subjects that employers value most.

There is an old Spanish Proverb which states, “Tomorrow is often the busiest day of the week”.     36     I’d say, too many. Our dreams should not, and cannot wait. We have to go for them now! Here’s why.

1.   37

Nobody likes to talk about death, but the reality is – everybody is going to die at one point. None of us know the day, or the hour. Therefore, today is all we have. Don’t go to your grave with unfulfilled dreams. Make the decision to go after every dream, big or small right now.

I know this may be hard to believe, but the world is waiting on YOU! Yes, YOU!    38     Sure, other people may be able to sing. But they’ll never be able to sing exactly like you. Sure other people can write, but they’ll never be able to write from the same perspective in which you write. Don’t deprive the world of your gift. It’s the oxygen that we need to survive. Thus, it is your responsibility to figure out exactly what your gift is, and use to better your life and the lives of those around you.

3.    39

You can dream about writing the great American play that you want, but it’s never going to happen unless you actually put pen to paper. You can dream about finding a cure for cancer, but it will never happen unless you actually go to school to become equipped with the necessary tools to find that cure.    40    They require you to get your head out of the clouds, and actually do the work to make them happen. As it is known to us, fewer and fewer students do sports regularly, what makes them weak and easily tired.

There are many reasons about this. First of all, some of the students complained that they have too many homework, resulting in less time to take exercise. Beside, some of them think that it is very difficulty for them to keep doing exercise, because it is a very hard thing.

Because lack of physical activities, many students are in poor health. I suggest that our school must take measures to encourage more students to take part in sports. For us students, no matter what busy we are, it is necessary to spare some time to do exercise.
