Elizabeth Bishop, who was famous for the poetry A Prodigal, Filline
Station , Sandpiper, Manuelzinho and so on, was an influential American poet of
the 20th century. Her poetry often shows things that concerned her throughout
her life, such as her search for a sense of home. Her troubled childhood and
feelings of loneliness from this time affected her character and poetry.
Bishop's painful childhood is apparent in some of her poems. Her father
died when she was eight months old and her mother was mad when she was five.
Bishop was raised firstly by her mother's parents and then by her father's
parents. This experience left her confused about belonging. She had no home
and this was shown in her poetry. In A Prodigal, when the character in the poem
makes up his mind to go home, there is a sense of pessimism for Bishop who has
no home. The lack of a sense of home has contributed to her depression all her
life.
Bishop attempts to make small, everyday experiences extraordinary in her
poems such as Filling Station .In Filling Station , Bishop describes the beauty of a
family filling station. Although it is "dirty" there is order in it. Simple family
life is celebrated in it. She recognizes the value of home and beauty in everyday
life, but she is only an observer of these. Distance remains between her and the
family at the filling station.
Bishop's struggle to locate herself in the world is seen no more clearly than
in Sandpiper. It deals with searching for something in a confusing world. She
uses the metaphor of the bird which is "looking for something". The "something"
isn't specific. It seems as if the bird doesn't know what he wants; the only
certain thing is that he is searching.
Bishop's poems are personal on a more subtle level, especially when her
childhood, travels, etc, are taken into consideration. It is believed that Bishop is
a complex poet who uses her poetry to find this feeling of belonging.

Instagram is a fast, beautiful and fun way to share your life with friends and
family. Take a picture or video, choose a filter to transform its look and feel and
then post it to Instagram-it's that easy. You can even share to Facebook,
Twitter and more. It's a new way to see the world. So many photos of food are
contained on Instagram-now a pop-up diner in London is taking advantage of
this new trend by letting people settle the bill for their meals simply by uploading
photos of their dishes to social networks.
I always thought people's taking pictures of their food was kind of silly, but
at this new pop-up restaurant in the UK, I'd probably do it too. "The Picture
House" is the world's first pay-by-photo restaurant-you order, click a photo of
the food, share on Instagram and eat for free!
The restaurant belongs to frozen food giant Birds Eye, who came up with
the idea to cash in on people's addiction with photographing food and sharing
the pictures online. They conducted a survey and found out that more than half
of the British population regularly took pictures of their meals. So they realized
it was a better way to advertise their new dining range.
The pop-up diner was open in Soho, London for three days in May, and is
now moving to other major UK cities. They serve two-course meals that
customers don't have to pay for, if they photo and Instagram it.
The restaurant is a part of Birds Eye's "Food for Life" campaign, a new
marketing project that aims at changing the way people look at frozen food.
"Taking photos of food enables people to show off and to share their mealtime
moments-from the everyday to the special," said marketing director Margaret
Jobling.
The reaction to The Picture House has been great so far. And the pay-by-
picture concept has proven to be an effective way. Alternative payment methods
are actually gaining popularity among a lot of businesses. Last year in a cafe in
Germany customers pay by how much time they spend there, not by what they
eat.
28. Instagram probably is
A. a restaurant free of charge
B. a program used to share photos
C. a campaign of "Food for Life"
D. a new marketing project
29. What's the author's attitude to this new trend?
A. Confused. B. Unconcerned.
C. Interested. D. Opposed.
30. "The Picture House" encourages sharing photos of its food to
A. raise the price of frozen food
B. create a new social media trend
C. attract more customers
D. reward the regular customers
31. Which of the following can serve as the best title for the passage?
A. The Pop-up Diner B. Pay by Picture
C. No Need to Pay D. Food for Life

Mammoths may return
Many of us remember being in awe(敬畏) when we saw cloned dinosaurs
running wild in the film Jurassic Park. And the idea of using technology to revive
(恢复) extinct (绝的) species has long fascinated not only writers and
directors, but scientists as well.
According to The Telegraph, woolly mammoths (长毛猛犸象), which
featured in the popular Ice Age animated movie series, "may walk the earth once
more" now that scientists have taken another step toward realizing a long-held
dream-recreating their DNA.
Mammoths became extinct around 10,000 years ago. However, since the
discovery of near-perfect preserved remains in Arctic permafrost(北极冻土带) in
May 2013, a variety of research studies have been carried out since.
Geneticists from Harvard University analyzed DNA from the remains,
looking for genes which separated mammoths from elephants, such as hairiness
and ear size. They then used the results to reproduce exact copies of 14 mammoth
genes. "It is the first time that mammoth genes have been alive-although so far
it has only been done in the lab," George Church, lead researcher of the project,
told the Sunday Times.
Church then used a new technique which allows scientists to edit DNA
carefully, replacing sections of elephant DNA with the mammoth genes. So "we
now have functioning(正常运行的) elephant cells with mammoth DNA in them,"
he said.
However, Church ruled out the possibility of bringing the mammoths back
to life via cloning from frozen remains. He said he "preferred to focus on
rebuilding the full mammoth genome by analyzing DNA from preserved remains
and putting it into the cells of its closest living relative-the Asian elephant,"
reported The Telegraph.
Church argued that the return of the woolly mammoth-or rather, the
return of something very similar-could help bring back fragile(脆弱的)
ecosystems. However, some scientists believe that bringing back the mammoth
would be unethical.
Professor Alex Greenwood, an expert on ancient DNA, said: "We may face
the extinction of African and Asian elephants. Why bring back another elephant
from extinction when we cannot even keep the ones that are not extinct around?"
he told the Sunday Times. "What is the message? We can be as irresponsible with
the environment as we want. Then we'll just clone things back?"
¨Money would be better spent focusing on conserving what we do have than
spending it on an animal that has been extinct for thousands of years," he said.
32. We can infer from the article that
A. scientific studies on mammoths didn't begin until May 2013
B. the technology to revive mammoth genes is already mature
C. Church and his team managed to list all the genes that separate
mammoths from elephants
D. George Church and his colleagues tried to reproduce mammoth DNA
33. According to Church, what is the significance of his study?
A. It could help prevent the extinction of the Asian elephant.
B. It could help bring back some extinct species and save fragile ecosystems.
C. It could help people better tell elephant DNA from mammoth genes.
D. It could help bring mammoths back to life via cloning from frozen
remains.
34. The underlined word "unethical" in Paragraph 7 is closest in meaning to
A. impractical B. illegal C. unacceptable D. interesting
35. According to the article, Professor Alex Greenwood believes that
A. there is no need to worry about the extinction of African and Asian
elephants at present
B. it's necessary to bring back species that are beneficial to human beings
from extinction
C. it's more important to protect present species than to bring back extinct
ones
D. the return of the woolly mammoth would help to balance ecosystems
