This is a must-have book. It is a complete and engaging curriculum that is easy to use and understand. My girls are so close in age I was able to use it with all three at once and they loved it. And it’s inexpensive! Love the way it is written.

Katrena R. from Shingle Springs, CA

This is a great book. Everyone (elementary/primary aged) should have this book in their homeschooling library. My kids (ages 4-9) have all enjoyed this book. It is engaging and well written for young ones. There is a lot of information packed into this book and it is presented in a way that is not boring for kids. It is kind of like The Story of the World.

Cities with high levels of homeownership—in the range of 75%, like Detroit and St. Louis—had on average considerably lower levels of economic activity and much lower wages and incomes. Far too many people in financial problems are trapped in homes they can’t sell, unable to move on to new centers of opportunity.

The cities and regions with the lowest levels of homeownership—in the range of 55% to 60% like Los Angeles and New York—had healthier economies and higher incomes. They also had higher levels of happiness and well-being.

I was shocked to read these interesting points that Richard Florida made in his recent article. Let me try to understand. The people in Detroit and St. Louis are less happy than the people in New York, and Los Angeles. And, the reason is because of homeownership rates?

First, to compare them to New York City (the economic capital of the world), Los Angeles (the entertainment capital of the world) seems unfair. Most people in almost any other city in the world might be less happy!

Next, let’s try a different way of determining whether renters are happier than homeowners. Why don’t we ask them? Fannie Mae’s National Housing Survey 2010 reported:

 75% of current renters believe owning a home makes more sense.

 67% plan to buy a home at some point in the future.

When they asked current renters for the major reason to buy a house, these were their answers (they could pick several answers):

 78% said it was a good place to raise children.

 75% said because they would feel safe.

 70% said because you have control of your own space.

If you believe renters are happier, you would also have to believe the majority enjoy living in a less safe environment, which wouldn’t be a good place to raise children and would be a place where they have less control of their space.

63. Which of the following is a fact?

A. People in Los Angeles earn high incomes because of its low homeownership rate.

B. New York’s low homeownership rate increases people’s happiness levels.

C. Detroit’s high level of homeownership causes its economic problems.

D. St. Louis has a higher level of homeownership than Los Angeles.

64. In his article, Richard Florida tried to express that _________.

A. people in Los Angeles are happier than those in St. Louis

B. renting a house is better than owning a house

C. Detroit’s economy is healthier than New York’s economy

D. New York and Los Angeles are happiest cities

65. The writer believes that New York City and Los Angeles _________.

A. pay employees highest wages in America

B. benefit from low levels of homeownership

C. are leading cities across the globe

D. are best American cities to live in

66. From Fannie Mae’s survey report, we can know that _________.

A. paying rent makes more sense

B. most homeowners plan to sell their houses

C. most renters prefer to become homeowners

D. parents need to buy a house for their children

One important variable affecting communication across cultures is destiny (命运) and personal responsibility. This refers to the degree to which we feel ourselves the masters of our lives, contrary to the degree to which we see ourselves as subject to things outside our control. Another way to look at this is to ask how much we see ourselves able to change and act, to choose the course of our lives and relationships. Some have drawn a parallel between the personal responsibility in North American settings and the view itself. The North American view is vast, with large spaces of unpopulated land. The frontier attitude of “King” of the wilderness, and the expansiveness(广阔) of the land reaching huge distances, may relate to generally high levels of confidence in the ability to shape and choose our destinies.

In this expansive land, many children grow up with a heroic sense of life, where ideas are big, and hope springs forever. When they experience temporary failures, they encouraged to redouble their efforts, to “try, try again.” Action, efficiency , and achievement are valued and expected. Free will is respected in laws and enforced by courts.

Now consider places in the world with much smaller land, whose history reflects wars and tough struggles: Northern Ireland, Mexico, Israel, Palestine. In these places, destiny’s role is more important in human life. In Mexico, there is a history of hard life, fighting over land, and loss of homes. Mexicans are more likely to see struggles as part of their life and unavoidable. Their passive attitude is expressed in their way of responding to failure or accident by saying “no mode” (“no way” or “tough lick”), meaning that the failure was destined.

This variable is important to understanding cultural conflict. If someone believing in free will crosses paths with someone more passive, miscommunication is likely. The first person may expect action and responsibility. Failing to see it, he may conclude that the second is lazy, not cooperative, or dishonest. The second person will expect respect for the natural order of things. Failing to see it, he may conclude that the first is forcible, rude, or big headed in his ideas of what can be accomplished or changed.

67. The author thinks that one’s character is partly determined by __________.

A. physical senses                     B. general attitude

C. financial background                D. geographic characteristics

68. According to the passage, Mexicans would think that Americans are __________.

A. impractical   B. dishonest   C. ambitious   D. hesitant

69. The underlined word “subject” in Paragraph l probably means __________.

A. a topic of a discussion

B. a branch of knowledge

C. a person being experimented on

D. a person under the power of others

70. The author would probably agree that __________.

A. vast land may lead to a more controllable desire

B. heroic sense of life roots deeply in a small country

C. living in limited space contributes to an accepting attitude

D. fighting over land may help people gain high levels of confidence

W:Will John be coming to class this afternoon?

M: He’s supposed to. But actually he won’t come to this class from the hospital until next week as the doctor has said.

(Text 2)

M: I’ve brought back your Oxford Companion to English Literature. I thought you might use it for your paper. Sorry not to have returned it earlier.

W: I was wondering where that book was.

(Text 3)

M: I was so angry when the cab driver tried to overcharge me that I called a policeman.

W: That kind of thing seems to be happening quite frequently. I think you did the right thing.

(Text 4)

W: it’s $6 for me, and $ 8 for you.

M: Okay.

W: Let’s pay it at the counter.

M: How about the tip?

W: 15% would be about $2. I’ll leave a dollar and you leave another on the table.

(Text 5)

W: John, where can I buy a used computer?

M: Did you look on the bulletin boards around campus?

W: You know I never thought of that. I don’t know what I would do without your advice.

(Text 6)

W: Harry, have you been using my iPod again?

M: Alice! Don’t get so uptight.

W: And my new headphones, too? You creep!

M: Well, OK, I was going to put them back. Anyway, what’s the big deal?

W: The big deal is that it is so disrespectful to take things without asking.

M: Well, how about you? You’re always borrowing my sweaters, and jumpers, and stuff.

W: Yeah, well, that’s different.

M: I don’t think so.

(Text 7)

M: Hi, little sister. How’s your first week away at school?

W: Well, I have to say that dormitory living has some major negatives.

M: Like what?

W: It’s kind of disgusting to have to share a bathroom and showers with thirty other people. And some of my neighbors party on school nights. The other night, I had my first exam, and I was trying to get a good night’s sleep, but it was impossible, they were so noisy.

M: Yeah, that sure sounds like dorm life! That’s why I moved out my sophomore year.

W: I think I will, too.

(Text 8)

M: Hey, Jamie, you look stressed out. What’s wrong?

W: Oh, I have to decide my major this month, and I’m still undecided.

M: I thought you were majoring in theater. Didn’t you say you wanted to be the next Angelina Jolie?

W: Yeah, but I changed my mind last semester and started taking more psychology classes.

M: Well, why don’t you do that? You could be the next Sigmund Freud, the female version.

W: I would, but I don’t know. I’m taking a really great physics class this semester. I totally love it.

M: Then why not do physics?

W: So I could be the next Albert Einstein, right? I don’t know about that, either. I kinda want to take some French classes. Yeah, that sounds good! Maybe I should major in French. Although, if I take French, then I can’t really take the physics. And I mean, theater still is really fun.

(Text 9)

W: How many hours do you spend on the Internet every day?

M: I spend about l t0 3 0n a school day working and probably about half an hour just surfing. And on a weekend, I would spend about 2-10 hours working and about two hours surfing or so. I try to limit my time. I don’t want to get addicted to the Internet.

W: You do all the design work?

M: Yes, the design, the programming. My father handles the marketing. He markets the company very well actually. And if you go to any major search engine such as Yahoo or Google, and type in web designing company or Macromedia Flash, we will come in the top 10 with is marketing.

W: And do you know those marketing things?

M: He is teaching me. He is training me for that when I am older actually, so I don’t have to be dependent on anybody.

W: What would you do if people don’t treat you as a grown-up? If they don’t take you seriously, what would you do?

M: I simply let them go. You can’t do business with someone who doesn’t take you seriously.

(Text 10)

M: It is both an honor and a privilege to be able to introduce you to a man of distinction - Usain Bolt. Usain Bolt was born on 21st of August 1986. He has distinguished himself as a world-class sprinter and he holds the Olympic and World Records for the 100 meters in 9.69 seconds and the 200 meters in 19. 30 seconds. Usain has taken his level of excellence one step further - and together with his teammates— he also won the 4xl00 meters relay in the amazing time of 37. 10 seconds.

All of Usain’s achievements were set at the 2008 Summer Olympics. Usain became the first man to win all three events at a single Olympics since Carl Lewis in 1984 and the fist man in history to set world records in all three events at a single Olympics. His name and his achievements in sprinting have earned him the title of "Lightning Bolt". I am sure that you all know a great deal about his public sprinting life, but there is more to Usain than just running. He enjoys dancing and he is often described as a calm and relaxed character.

Ladies and Gentlemen, please join me in welcoming Usain Bolt to address you this morning with his words of wisdom.

81. One possible version:

Everyone has a desire for success while success only belongs to the hard-working people. As the old saying goes, “no pains, no gains.”

I failed in the last exam. So discouraged was I that I didn’t want to do anything. I didn’t do exercises and even attend to what the teacher said in the classes. Later on, I found things got even worse. Meanwhile, a great many students made every effort to study. Only then did I realize I was wrong and that success will not wait for me. So I made the best of every minute to catch up with my classmates. Now I’m progressing in my studies. I feel confident that my effort will pay off eventually.

My story makes me believe failure is temporary for a diligent person but permanent for the lazy. One’s efforts will surely be rewarded with success no matter how big or small the success is.
