There was a wonder-filled little girl who was hurt so badly that when she entered adult life, she thought she was so bad that others just couldn't be nice to her.
But she had a lot of curiosity, which kept her going. She sought many wise people to help her understand why she was so bad that her mother hurt her and why she was unable to be better so that men wouldn't hurt her.
She was on a journey that she thought was to help her be “better”. She carried a big bag with her everywhere she went. Inside it were all the hurts she had experienced. Because she was so eager to please those who offered their wisdom, she willingly agreed with what they said about forgiving. But she held that bag of hurts tightly.
After 50 years of carrying that bag around and showing it to all she met as if it were proof that she was a good person, she decided to open it up and just see what happened. When she looked inside, it was filled with bits of paper. At one time they had words on them, detailing the hurts. But time had faded(褪色) the words and all that was left was some useless paper. She had been struggling to carry this bag that held nothing but the image of something that once was.
She saw the absurdity (荒谬) of carrying that bag around. It made her laugh. But letting go of the paper and having pity for those that hurt her, this little girl was able to become a woman with beautiful hair. The woman looked in the mirror and said, “I am lovable.” Although it took many years, she was finally open to bringing love and respect into her life.
21. When she grew up, the little girl wondered_____________.
A. why she couldn’t be loved B. where she should go
C. how she could be a sweet girl D. why she was hurt so deeply
22. The woman laughed in the end because_________________.
A. she had beautiful hair B. she became lovable
C. she became a wise woman D. she realized her silliness
23. What lesson can we learn from the story?
A. You will walk fast without carrying a load. B. You will become young if you forget your hurts.
C. You will get peace after forgiving others. D. You will be loved after changing your image.

Americans are thinking about national education standards recently developed by teachers and other education experts. The National Governors Association (NGA) and the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) led the effort.
The United States, unlike other nations, has never had the same school standards across the country. What is the reason? Education is not discussed in the Constitution. That document limits the responsibilities of the federal(联邦的) government. Other responsibilities, like education, fall to each state.
Local control of education probably was a good idea two hundred years ago. People stayed in the same place and schools knew what students needed to learn. But today, people move to different cities. And some people work at jobs that did not exist even twenty years ago.
Many American educators say that getting a good education should not depend on where you live. They say that some states have lowered their standards in order to increase student scores on tests required by the No Child Left behind Act.
Kara Schlosser is communications director for the CCSSO. She says the new standards clearly state what a student should be able to do to be successful in college and work.
Forty-eight states have already shown approval for the standards. Two states refuse to accept the idea. Critics say that working toward the same standards in every state will not guarantee excellence for all. Some educators in Massachusetts say adopting the national standards will hurt their students because the state standards are even higher. Others say the change will be too costly, requiring new textbooks and different kinds of training for teachers. Still others fear federal control.
Supporters say the standards are goals and do not tell states or teachers how to teach. They also say the federal government is not forcing acceptance. However, approving the standards will help states qualify (取得资格) for some federal grant money.
28. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Local Control of Education Standards out of Date
B. Education Standards in Each State--Good or Bad?
C. American National Education Standards under Consideration
D. Acceptance of the New Standards in the United States
29. Why is local control of education no longer a good idea today?
A. Because local standards are limited.
B. Because it is required by the federal government.
C. Because America has never had the same school standards throughout the country.
D. Because people today moves among states more often than before.
30. Some people are against the nationa1 education standards because__________
A. the standards may prevent some students gaining excellence
B. they are not yet prepared for the new standards
C. the standards are higher than those of each state
D. they don't want the federal government to train their teachers
31. If a state agrees to accept the national standards, it will probably get ________.
A. more students B. financial support from the federal government
C. better textbooks D. advice on how to improve teaching
D
Most people who move to a foreign country or culture may go through some form of culture shock, and its degree is determined by the differences between cultures, the anxiety to adapt to a new culture and the familiarity with the new culture, etc. If you go, for example, to a culture that is far different from your own, you’re likely to experience culture shock more sharply than those who move to a new culture knowing the language and the custom of it.
It is important to understand and learn how to deal with culture shock if you are to adapt successfully to your new home’s culture. There are four general stages of cultural adjustment, and being aware of them helps you understand that culture shock won’t last long. It is just a process you are going through rather than a constant situation.
The first stage is usually referred to as the “honeymoon’ stage”. Upon arriving in a new environment, you’ll be interested in the new culture, everything will seem thrilling and everyone will seem friendly and helpful. During this stage you are merely taking in these impressions passively.
But it isn’t long before the honeymoon stage gives way to the second stage – “the withdrawal stage”. The excitement you felt before is gone and problems arise. The language is hard to learn, people are unusual and unpredictable, friends are hard to make, and simple things like shopping and going to the bank are challenges. It is at this stage that you are likely to feel anxious and homesick, and you will probably find yourself complaining about the new culture or country. This is the stage called “culture shock”.
At some point, if you can manage it well, you’ll begin the transition into the next stage, “the recovery stage”, in which you’ll feel more confident functioning in the new culture. Customs and traditions are clearer and easier to understand. At this stage, you’ll deal with new challenges with humor rather than anxiety.
32. According to the passage, culture shock can be ________.
A. reduced by learning the language alone B. dealt with more easily for some people
C. avoided by knowing adjustment stages D. got rid of by learning just the custom
33. The “honeymoon” stage probably refers to ________.
A. the first month after the wedding B. the holiday for a newly-married couple
C. the stage of adaptation D. the period of excitement
34. Which of the following doesn’t belong to the second stage?
A. Feeling confident. B. Missing family.
C. Becoming upset. D. Making complains.
35. What would be probably discussed in the paragraph that follows?
A. Results of culture shock. B. The 4th stage of cultural adjustment.
C. Preparations for a new culture. D. Challenges in a new country.

Simple ways to get happy
We are not suggesting that you can reach a permanent state called “happiness” and remain there. But there are many ways to turn the path of anxiety, anger, and sadness into a state of happiness. Here are four ideas to get you started.____36_____.
1. Laugh out loud.
Just expecting a happy, funny event can raise levels of pleasure-causing hormones (荷尔蒙) and lower production of stress hormones. Researchers at the University of California tested 16 men who all agreed they thought a certain videotape was funny. Half were told three days in advance they would watch it. ___37___. When they actually watched the video, their levels of stress hormones dropped greatly, while their levels of pleasure-causing hormones rose 27 percent.

3. ____39_____
Although relationships help take away stress sometimes you need time to recharge and reflect on your own. Take yourself out to lunch or to a movie, or simply spend an afternoon reading at home, or looking through books in a bookstore.
4. Practice mindfulness
