What will the future be like?

Recently our class has held a discussion on “What will the future be like?” . Some students think that in the future science will be more advanced, and transportation will be more convenient, and what’s more, people will live much longer and the level of their living conditions will be higher. However, some students think that in the future natural resources will further decrease and farmland will become lost (will decline sharply), and there will be more traffic accidents. In my opinion, we should try to protect natural resources and decrease environment pollution.

Text 1

W: have you watched the movie called the burning heart?

M: no, not yet, but I know it is a very touching and romantic story about love and friendship. I have read some online information about it.

W: I think it is a very good movie. It is about a young American in the 1920s. His business drops because of the weak economy at that time. In the end, his company closes down. However, he isn’t affected by this, instead, he…

M: Wait, please don’t tell me the whole story now. Don’t give the plot away, otherwise I won’t have any interest in watching it myself.

W: Sorry. Would you like to watch it tonight? I have it on DVD, Although it is better to see it in a cinema.

M: That is great! Thanks a lot. By the way, how much did you pay for the DVD? I guess it must be quite expensive.

W: No, not really, I just paid twenty dollars.

M: Twenty dollars! How come?

W: Well actually my friend and I bought it in a second-hand market.

M: Oh, can I come to your house at 8o’clock?

W: Of course.

Text 2

W: what happened? You look so upset.

M: What happened? I can not stand my roommate Jack anymore. He plays computer games every day till midnight.

W: And what?

M: And he is not just pressing the keyboard. He is pounding it. When he gets excited, he even laughs out loud. I can never fall asleep with that.

W: So what? That’s too bad. Did you talk to him?

M: You think he minds it? I’ve talked to him many times.

W: What’s his response to what you say?

M: He just promised that he wouldn’t do it. But two days later, he is on it again.

W: Poor thing. I think he does mind. The problem is that he’s addicted to it and can't get over the addiction. What about helping to get rid of it?

M: But how? I don't think he can live without it.

W: Is his study suffering too?

M: Yes, he failed three courses last term.

W: So, why not try your best to persuade him to stop playing computer games? Not only for you, but also for his studies.

M: Ok, I will give it another try.

Text3

W: hello

M: Is that you, yvonne?

W: ER… yes. Martin? Is that you? What a surprise!Where are you ringing from?

M: I’ m in a phone box in Cambridge.

W: What are you doing in England? I thought you were in Italy.

M: I was, but I am attending a conference in London tomorrow and so Maria and I are staying with some friends here.

W: Great! Is Maria with you now? I haven't seen you two since you got married last year.

M: No, she is doing some shopping. You know Maria, every time we come to Cambridge she spends hours in bookshops.

W: Yes, I remember that. Martin, how long are you planning to stay?

M: Until Sunday afternoon.

W: Well, look, we’re having a dinner party on Friday evening. Why don't you come over and join us?

M: Yeah, sure, we’d love so. Any particular time?

W: Let’s say 8:30. We never eat before then. By the way, how will you get here? I can meet you at the bus stop.

M: We will take a taxi. We can come to your house by ourselves. We will see you on Friday.

W: Okay, see you then. Bye.

Text4

W: Excuse me. I am the manager of this restaurant. I ‘d like to know our customer’s opinions. Would you mind answering some questions?

M: No, I wouldn’t.

W: Thank you. You are Mr. Green, right? I know you booked a table for today. That’s 30th July.

M: Yes, I took my students here to celebrate our team’s victory in the football match. We had a good time.

W: Great. What do you think about the restaurant?

M:I think the setting of the restaurant is bad. The tables are very crowded. And the buffet sections are far away from each other. We had to walk a lot to different kinds of food. I quite like the decoration of the restaurant. It is beautiful but it is a bit dark. Old people and children may not see clearly.

W: I see. What about the service of our staff?

M: Very good. They’re very polite and they’re fast to serve us.

W: Thank you. What do you think about our food?

M: It’s very nice. We could choose from a large variety of food. There are some uncommon kinds of food too. I must say the food here is really yummy!

W: Glad to hear that! Will you come again?

M: Of course I will. But one thing I am not very happy with is the price. Although the buffet is quiet cheap, there’s no discounted price for students or old people. It is unreasonable.

W: Do you have any other suggestions, so that we can make improvements?

M: I think you can give VIP cards to regular customers. Then they’ll come more often. Another thing is that you buffets can have different themes each month. That’ll attract more customers.

W: Good ideas! Thank you, Mr. Green. Oh, what is your phone number?
