(A)
Professor Barry Wellman of the University of Toronto in Canada has invented a term to describe the way many North Americans interact these days. The term is “networked individualism”. This concept is not easy to understand because the words seem to have opposite meanings. How can we be individuals and be networked at the same time? You need other people for networks.
Here is what Professor Wellman means. Before the invention of the Internet and e-mail, our social networks included live interactions with relatives, neighbors, and friends. Some of the interaction was by phone, but it was still voice to voice, person to person, in real time.
A recent research study by the Pew Internet and American Life Project showed that for a lot of people, electronic interaction through the computer has replaced this person-to-person interaction. However, a lot of people interviewed for the Pew study say that’s a good thing. Why?
In the past, many people were worried that the Internet isolated (孤立) us and caused us to spend too much time in the imaginary world of the computer. But the Pew study discovered that the opposite is true. The Internet connects us with more real people than expected—helpful people who can give advice on careers, medical problems, raising children, and choosing a school or college. About 60 million Americans told Pew that the Internet plays an important role in helping them make major life decisions.
Thanks to the computer, we are able to be alone and together with other people — at the same time!
61. The underlined phrase “networked individualism” probably means that by using computers people ________.
A. stick to their own ways no matter what other people say
B. have the rights and freedom to do things of their own interest
C. do things in their own ways and express opinions different from other people
D. are able to keep to themselves but at the same time reach out to other people
62. According to the Pew study, what do many people rely on to make major life decisions?
A. Networks B. Friends C. Phones D. Parents.
63. It can be inferred from the Pew study that _______.
A. people have been separated from each other by using computers
B. the Internet makes people waste a lot of time and feel very lonely
C. the Internet has become a tool for a new kind of social communication
D. a lot of people regard the person-to-person communication as a good thing

The first time I saw Carlos I would never have believed he was going to change my life. I had my arms full of books and I was tearing into the classroom when I ran into something solid. It was Carlos.
“My …, you’re tall,” he said.
Of course, the class began to laugh. Angry, I walked to my seat without a word.
I glanced back to see if Reed Harrington was laughing with the rest. That would be the last straw. But Reed was studying chemistry and did not seem to be aware of anything else. I didn’t know why I considered Reed my friend. Maybe just because he was a good two inches taller than I. Anyway, every time I blew out my birthday candles and made a wish, it was for a date with Reed Harrington. “Take that seat,” Mr. McCarthy told the proud newcomer Carlos, pointing to the only empty one, in the back of the room.
Carlos smiled broadly. “But I need a couple of dictionaries.” Again the class laughed, but now they were laughing with Carlos, not at him. He had been here only 10 minutes and already he had them on his side.
It was the school elections that made me think of Carlos again. Reed Harrington was voted president and Carlos vice president. “How come?” I kept asking myself. “How come this shrimp(虾) who’s only been in town for a little over a month gets to be so popular.”
So on that morning, I stopped Carlos and said, “It doesn’t seem to bother you—being short.” He looked up at me.“Of course I mind being short. But there isn’t anything I can do about it. When I realized I was going to have to spend my life in this undersized skin, I just decided to make the best of it and concentrate on being myself.” “You seem to get along great,” I admitted. “But what about me? Nobody wants to date a girl taller than he is.” “The trouble with you is you’re afraid to be yourself. You’re smart. And you could be pretty. In fact, you might be more than pretty.” I felt myself turning red.
64. Which of the following is true according to the passage?
A. The writer cared much about Reed’s attitude.
B. Carlos isn’t popular with the classmates.
C. The writer is always confident with herself.
D. Carlos always makes fun of the writer.
65. From the passage, we can conclude _______________.
A. Carlos is as tall as the writer
B. Carlos fell in love with the writer later
C. the writer is very tall
D. Reed, Carlos and the writer became good friends later
66. What can we use to describe Carlos’ character?
A. Handsome and proud B. Humorous and confident
C. Diligent and helpful D. Hardworking and popular
67. What’s the best title of the passage?
A. A girl and a boy. B. My shortcomings.
C. My helpful classmates. D. A change in my life.
Section C (8%)
Directions: Read the passage carefully. Then answer the questions or complete the statements in the fewest possible words.
Life is a learning process, which involves happiness and sorrow, failure and success, hope and despair. Experiences in life teach us new lessons and make us a better person. With each passing day we learn to handle various situations.
Materialistic happiness is short-lived, but happiness achieved by bringing a smile on others’ face gives a certain level of fulfillment. Peace of mind is the main link to happiness. No mind is happy without peace. We realize the true worth of happiness when we are in sorrow. Sorrow is basically due to death of a loved one, failure and despair but these things are temporary and pass away.
Failure is the path to success. It helps us to touch the sky, teaches us to survive and shows us a specific way. Success brings in money, fame, pride and self-respect. Here it becomes very important to keep our head on our shoulder. The only way to show our gratitude to enjoying success is by being humble, modest, courteous and respectful to the less fortunate ones.
Hope is what keeps life going. Parents always hope their children will do well. Hope makes us dream. Hope builds in patience. Life teaches us not to despair even in the darkest hour, because after every night there comes the morning. Nothing remains the same. We have only one choice: keep moving on in life and be hopeful.
Life teaches us not to regret over yesterday, for it has passed and is beyond our control. Tomorrow is unknown, for it could either be bright or dull. So the only alternative is: work hard today, so that we will enjoy a better tomorrow.
(Note: Answer the questions or complete the statements in NO MORE THAN 15 WORDS.)
68. Why is life a learning process?
69. In paragraph 2, “by bringing a smile on others’ face” means _________.
70. According to the passage the only way to express our graduate to enjoying success is by
___________
71. Why is “working hard today” the only alternative according to the text?
Section D (5%)
Directions: Read the following text and choose the most suitable heading from A-F for each paragraph. There is one extra heading which you do not need.
A. The importance of wearing uniforms
B. Practical problems of wearing uniforms
C. Lack of variety --- one of the disadvantages of wearing uniforms
D. Wearing uniforms is popular in America
E. One wearing uniforms looks more professional
F. Practical benefits of wearing uniforms
72.
Americans are proud of their variety and individuality, yet they love and respect few things more than a uniform, whether it is the uniform of an elevator operator or the uniform of a five-star general. Why are uniforms so popular in the United States?
73.
Among the arguments for uniforms, one of the first is that in the eyes of the most people they look more professional than civilian clothes. People have become conditioned to expect superior quality from a man who wears a uniform. The television repairman who wears a uniform tends to inspire more trust than that one who appears in civilian clothes. Faith in the skill of a garage mechanic is increased by a uniform. What easier way is there for a nurse, a policeman, a barber, or a waiter to lose professional identity than to step out of uniform?
74.
Uniforms also have many practical benefits. They save on other clothes. They save on laundry bills. They are tax—deductible ( 可减税的). They are often more comfortable and more durable than civilian clothes.
75.
Primary among the arguments against uniforms is their lack of variety and the consequent loss of individuality experienced by people who must wear them. Though there are many types of uniforms, the wearer of any particular type is generally struck with it, without change, until retirement. When people look alike, they tent to think, speak, and act similarly, on the job at least.
76.
Uniforms also give rise to some practical problems. Though they are long-lasting, often their initial expense is greater than the cost of civilian clothes. Some uniforms are also expensive to maintain, requiring professional dry cleaning rather than the home laundering possible with many types of civilian clothes.

Dear Mr. Principal,
I am a senior student of our school. I'd like to say something about the canteen service in our school. In general, the service is satisfactory. The hall is clean and tidy. The dishes look inviting and taste delicious as well. What's more, the workers there treat us as their friends, which makes us feel very happy.
However, we feel the price of the meals is a little too high, Besides, we can only have a limited variety of dishes with little change every week. In addition, we often have to stand in line for a long time before we can get the meal. You could understand how precious time is to us students. Therefore, may I suggest something be done to solve the problems so that we can all enjoy our meals at school?
Thanks for your consideration.
Sincerely yours,
Li Hua
