One thing most people know about Einstein is that he was a poor student in school, and may have had difficulty in reading. It turns out that this is nowhere near true. By the age of 13 he was reading advanced physics texts, and by the age of 15 he had read Darwin’s On the Origin of Species.

This widespread belief about his school grades may come from two areas: confusion about his school’s grading system, and his “failure”in his college exams. The school that Einstein attended when he was 16 changed its grading system at one point. The school at first graded on a scale of 1 to 6. 1 being the highest grade possible. And 6 being the lowest. After the change, 6 became the highest mark and 1 the lowest. Thus, if you look at Einstein’s school records at that time you can see that he received 1’s in math and physics.
