We live in a technological society where most goods are mass-produced by unskilled labor. Because of this, most people think that craft (手艺) no longer exists.
One of the ways these people wrongly support their view is by pointing to 100-year-old homes which are still solid, and arguing that it is the craftsmanship that is responsible for their durability (持久性). “Homes in those days were well-built,” they say. No doubt these homes were well-built, but what these people have done is mix up the quality of material used in the house with the quality of the craftsmanship.
Homes today could be built to last just as long as those old homes if people were willing or able to pay the price. For example, more people can no longer afford solid oak stairways, although they were once fairly common in older homes. Nor can they afford the high labor cost of employing a carpenter (木匠) to built the stairway. Yet if someone can pay the high cost, there are still plenty of carpenters around able to make those stairways. And not only would these carpenters know how to built them, they would probably do a better job than carpenters of old.
One thing the modern carpenter has which enables him to do a better job is much more advanced tools. Such tools as laser beams and power planes help them lay out a house better and make more precision cuts (精确切割) on the wood. Also, it is not uncommon any more to find carpenters with college degrees and carpenters with a solid knowledge of mathematics, which would enable them to deal with more difficult house designs.
The problem of modern quality, then, really boils down to the problem of material, for the modern carpenter is just as able to produce craftsmanship as the carpenter of fifty years ago, but only if given proper material.

Beauty has always been regarded as something praiseworthy. Almost everyone thinks attractive people are happier and healthier, have better marriages and have more respectable jobs. Personal advisors give them better advice for finding jobs. Even judges are softer on attractive defendants (被告). But in the executive (行政的;管理的) circle, beauty can become a liability.
While attractiveness is a positive factor for a man on his way up the executive ladder, it is harmful to a woman.
Handsome male executives were considered as having more honesty than plainer men; effort and ability were thought to lead to their success.
Attractive female executives were considered to have less honesty than unattractive ones; their success was connected not with ability but with factors such as luck.
All unattractive women executives were thought to have more honesty and to be more capable than the attractive female executives. Interestingly, though, the rise of the unattractive overnight successes was connected more to personal relationships and less to ability than that of the attractive overnight successes.
Why are attractive women not thought to be able? An attractive woman is considered to be more feminine and an attractive man more manly than the less attractive ones. Thus, an attractive woman has an advantage in traditionally female jobs, but an attractive woman in a traditionally manly position appears to lack the "manly" qualities required.
This is true even in politics. "When the only clue is how he or she looks, people treat men and women differently," says Anne Bowman, who recently published a study on the effects of attractiveness on political candidates. She asked 125 undergraduate students to rank two groups of photographs, one of men and one of women, of attractiveness. The students were told the photographs were of candidates for political offices. They were asked to rank them again, in the order they would vote for them.
The results showed that attractive males completely defeated unattractive men, but the women who had ranked most attractive unchangeably received the fewest votes.

A. disadvantage B. advantage C. misfortune D. trouble

A. makes women look more honest and capable

D. has as little effect on men as on women

Most of us must have experienced the following scene: A bunch of students are sitting in the cafeteria eating lunch. One of them has just taken a sip of milk when another one tells a hysterical joke. The milk drinker starts to laugh but ends up choking because he had just swallowed and the milk was still on the way to his stomach. Then a river of milk shoots out of his nose.
The episode raises an important question: How did the milk make that way out of the body? A side view of your head and neck shows the back of the nasal(鼻的)area, which is called the nasopharynx, joins the back of the mouth, which is called the oropharynx.
The body is designed so that air, liquids and solids all pass through the back of your mouth on their way inside. However, air and food end up in different places. Anything that is headed to the stomach goes down the esophagus. Anything that is headed to the lungs uses the trachea, or windpipe. The epiglottis lies at the top of the trachea. This piece of tissue is a sentry that keeps solids and liquids from getting into your lungs. If someone swallows and laughs at the same time, it often causes liquids to hit the epiglottis.
The soft palate and uvula are near the back of the throat. When a person coughs or vomits(呕吐),these tissues are pushed back, separating the back of your mouth area from the back of your nose.(Think of it as a door closing.)
The system isn’t perfect, which is why things can sometimes shoot out of your nose. It is very uncommon for food to take this path, because the nasal passages are so small. For milk and other liquids, however, this can happen more easily.
( ) 72. The purpose of the passage is to show us .
A. the structure of the human nasal area B. how to keep food out of your nose
C. why milk can shoot out of a person’s nose D. the danger of drinking milk
( ) 73. The normal route of food is after you put
it in your mouth.
A. or pharynx → trachea → stomach B. nasopharynx → trachea → stomach
C. or pharynx → esophagus → stomach D. nasopharynx → esophagus → stomach
( ) 74. According to the passage, what caused an unfortunate milk drinker to begin to cough?
A. Some milk hitting the epiglottis. B. Some milk passing through the back of the mouth.
C. Some milk coming out of mouth. D. Some milk going down the esophagus.
( ) 75. Which of the following might be the writer’s suggestion to students at table?

第四部分:写作(共两节,满分35分)
第一节:任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的单词。(每格限填一词)
A lecturer was giving a lecture to his students on stress management. He raised a glass of water and asked the audience, “How heavy do you think this glass of water is?”
All of the students tried to answer the question, and their answers ranged from 20g to 500g.
“It does not matter on the absolute weight. It depends on how long you hold it. If I hold it for a minute, it is OK. If I hold it for an hour, I will have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you will have to call an ambulance. It is exactly the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes. ”
“If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, we will not be able to carry on, because the burden is becoming increasingly heavier.”
“What you have to do is put the glass down, rest for a while before holding it again.”
We have to put down the burden periodically(有周期地), so that we can be refreshed and are able to carry on. Otherwise I think that we will break down on the half way and can’t realize our dream as we planned. All of us should really keep this in mind.
Before you return home from work tonight, put the burden of work down. Don’t carry it back home. You can pick it up tomorrow.
Whatever burden you are having now on your shoulders, let it down for a moment if you can. If you do like this, you can greatly improve your work efficiency(效率)and life quality.
Life is short; let’s enjoy it to the fullest.

In the cartoon, the man enjoys being clever and wishes to do a great job. However, regretfully,he is firmly fastened to his original position by the nature of laziness and certainly achieves nothing.?
In fact, you can see many such examples in life.Just as the old saying goes,“Diligence leads to success, while laziness results in failure.” Every task requires hard work, from learning
English to building a house. Some of my classmates are definitely clever, and they have a strong desire to go to a famous university, but unfortunately, they are wasting time talking and playing. And no doubt, they will end in failure.
Therefore, in my opinion, diligence plays a very important role in life. Only by working hard and practicing a lot are we able to overcome? difficulties and achieve our goals. No one can succeed just by thinking without any actions.
