The first day of Chinese lunar year is Chinese New year or Spring Festival. Families of China will meet together, cleaning their houses, eating dumplings as well as other delicious food, watching TV, visiting relatives and friends. The older will give the young lucky money in red paper envelopes with beautiful designs and best wishes on them. Outside in the street there are dragon dances and carnivals. Chinese New Year is by far the most well-known Chinese holiday, and also the most significant to Chinese culture.

Dear Tom,

I’m glad to know that you’re coming to China with your parents. As Chinese Spring Festival, I’d like you as well as your parents to spend the holiday with us together.

The Spring Festival is the most important festival for the Chinese. Everyone looks forward to celebrating it each year. It falls on the first day of the first month in the Chinese Lunar calendar. Several days before the New Year, people begin to prepare for its celebration. Houses are cleaned. Couplets are posted on doors. People are also busy buying meat, fish and vegetables. On the New Year’s Eve, family members gather together for a family reunion dinner. After the meal they watch TV until midnight. Then every family sets off fireworks to welcome the New Year. On the New Year’s Day friends and relatives pay New Year calls and give presents to each other. Children often enjoy getting some lucky money.

I wish you a pleasant journey and I’m sure you’ll like our Chinese traditional festival.

Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Yours,

Li Hua
