There was once an 11-year-old boy who went fishing every time he went to an island in the middle of a New Hampshire lake.

On the day before the bass opened, he and his farther were fishing early in the evening, catching other fish with worms. Then he tied a small silver lure put it into the lake. Suddenly the boy felt that something very big was pulling on the lure. His father watched with admiration as the boy skillfully brought the fish beside the bank. Finally he lifted the tired fish from the water. It was the largest one he had ever seen, but it was a bass.

The boy and his father looked at the big fish. The father struck a match and looked at his watch. It was 10 pm—two hours before the season opened. He looked at the fish, and then at the boy. ”You’ll have to pit it back, son,” he said.

“Dad!’ cried the boy.” There will be other fish,” said his father.’ Not as big as this one,” cried the boy. He looked around. No other fishermen or boats could be seen in the noonlight. He looked at his father again.

Even though no one had seen them, nor could anyone ever know what time he had caught the fish, the boy could tell from his father’s voice that the decision couldn’t be changed. He knew the huge bass into the black water.

The big fish disappeared. The boy thought that he would never see such a big fish again.

That was 34 years ago. Today the boy is a successful architect in New York city. He often takes his own son and daughters to fish at the same place.

And he was right. He has never caught such a large fish as the one he got that night long ago again. But he does see the same fish---again and again—ever time he has an ethical decision to make. His father had taught him that ethics are simply a matter of right or wrong, but it is only the practice of ethics that is difficult.

第一节 阅读表达(共15分,每题5分)

阅读下面的短文,并根据短文后的要求答题(请注意问题后的字数要求)。

If you are worried about things and are under a lot of stress at work or school, then you are probably not sleeping well. Worry can keep you awake, tossing and turning in bed until the early hours of the morning when you eventually fall asleep. When you wake up, you don’t feel refreshed, but tired and worn out and unable to face a new day.

Dr. Henry Winkle, in a recent newspaper article entitled Stress and Sleep, indicates that__________ Dr. Winkle says, “The more we worry, the less we sleep, the more we are unable to deal with stress. If we can find a way to get a good night’s sleep,” he adds, “we can often find the energy to deal with what’s worrying us.”

So, what is a good night’s sleep? Research shows that the amount of sleep which people need in order to keep healthy varies a lot. Seven hours in about the average amount, though strangely enough, sleeping longer often gives you a headache instead of making you feel more refreshed.

Dr. Winkle believes that preparing for sleeping is important. People who work late should try to give themselves a short break and do something restful before going to bed. This could be watching TV or listening to music. Doing some exercise earlier in the day should help you to feel physically as well as mentally tired. A bedtime drink can also help, but coffee or tea should be avoided as they contain caffeine and will keep you awake. “When you put the light out,” Dr. Winkle says, “concentrate on relaxing your muscles, working slowly up from your feet, and you’ll be asleep before you know it.”

【参考范文】

Being a Popular Student

We all hope to be popular with our classmates and teachers. To enjoy popularity, we are supposed to regard the class as our big family and even offer to sacrifice our personal interests whenever necessary. While taking an active part in all our class activities, we should work responsibly to build up a good reputation as a team.

To be students with high popularity, we are to show respect, concern and sympathy for others. As a result, we never hesitate to lend a hand to those in need.

To be a popular student, we ought to be strict with ourselves in everything we do at school and make every effort to achieve all-round development, being good not only at our lessons but also at sports, music, painting, social services and so on. In time of success we remain modest, while in time of difficulty we keep strong-minded.

All in all, popularity among classmates and teachers comes naturally to those who keep improving their personal qualities.
