One of the strongest arguments for the raising of the school leaving age (ROSLA) has been that it will bring us some way nearer to“equality of opportunity”.
Many people like to think of our present system of schooling as providing plenty of steps up the ladder of success for clever children. It wouldn't be good to think that no one who is really bright can be missed out when the state system is obviously so complete. It is obvious, for instance, that many children from less wealthy homes reach university or do well in other ways.
Unfortunately, we now have plenty of proofs that many children of every level of ability do much less well than they could. For instance, during the years of national military service it was possible to test the intelligence of all male 18to20yearold. Half of those soldiers who were placed in the two highest ability groups had left school at 15.
It has also been shown that the percentage of working class children going to university is almost the same now as it was in 1939. One study of 5,000 children from birth to 21 years old shows that up to half the bright pupils from working class homes left school when they reached 16 years old. Moreover, there is no difference in intelligence between the sexes, but far more boys than girls stay in education after 16.
It is clear from this and many other proofs that many children are still leaving school too early to benefit from the prizes—money, social respectability, and interesting jobs—which higher education gives. It is clear that the reasons why such children leave have much to do with their social background. Their parents often need the extra money another moneyearner would bring in; they don't value education for itself because their own was probably dull and unhappy. It is not so much that they force their sons and daughters to leave school, rather than they lend to say,“It's up to you.”
63.It is hoped that ROSLA will give all children ________.
A.a more enjoyable time at school B.the same chances in society
C.the right to a better school D.higher scores in intelligence tests
64.People would like to think that ________.
A.equal numbers of poor and wealthy children reach university
B.those with the least money get the best education
C.intelligent children are always selected by the system
D.only really clever children do well
65.Many children leave school early because ________.
A.their social background makes them unhappy
B.they have to give something to their family's income
C.their school is a dull and unhappy place
D.their parents don't allow them to make their own decisions
第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Before going outside in the morning, many of us check a window thermometer(温度计)for the temperature. This helps us decide what to wear. ___66__. We want our food to be a certain coldness in the refrigerator. We want it a certain hotness in the oven. If we don’t feel well, we use a thermometer to see if we have a fever. We keep our rooms a certain warmth in the winter and a certain coolness in the summer.
Not all the thermometers use the same system to measure temperature. We use a system called the Fahrenheit scale. But most other countries use the Centigrade scale.
Both systems use the freezing and boiling points of water as their guide.___67___ .
The most common kind of thermometer is made with mercury(水银)inside a clear glass tube. As mercury (or any other liquid ) becomes hot, it expands. As it gets colder, it contracts(收缩). That is why on hot days the mercury line is high in the glass tube.___68___.
First. Take a clear glass juice bottle that has a cap ; fill the bottle with coloured water. Tap a hole in the center of the cap using a hammer and thick nail. Put the cap on the jar. Then stick a plastic straw(吸管) through the nail hole.
__69__.
Finally. Place a white card on the outside of the bottle and behind the straw. Now you can see the water lever easily.
___70___.
As the temperature goes down, the water will contract, and the lever in the straw will come down. Perhaps you will want to keep a record of the water lever in the straw each morning for a week.
A.We use and depend on thermometers to measure the temperature of many other things
in our daily lives.
B.Thermometers measure temperature, by using materials that change in the same way
when they are heated or cooled.
C.Now that you know this rule you can make a thermometer of your own that will work.
D.The water will rise in the straw. As the temperature of the air goes up, the water will
expand and rise even higher.
E.They label these in different ways. On the Fahrenheit scale water freezes at 32 degrees and boils at 212 degrees. On the Celsius scale water freezes at 0 degrees and boils at 100degrees.
F.Take wax (you may use an old candle if you have one) and melt some of it right where the straw is struck into the cap to seal把..粘住) them together.
G.People use thermometers which are made by themselves when travelling around the world.

Dear Paul,
How are you! I think you have come back to school now.
I have had a wonderful winter holiday. During the holiday, my father and I went to hometown, In the countryside in HeBei Province. I was astonished to find that great changes had taken place in the village in recent years. Almost every family in the village had colour TV set, many families had their houses newly built, or rebuilt, some of them had motorcycles or cars.
One of the villagers proudly told me that he and some other villagers were going to join a tour and travel abroad. How I admire them!
I said to my father that I would go back to my hometown after I graduated from college. Father also expressed he would go back as soon as he retired. Both of us were disappointed when the holiday ended so soon, and we had to leave.
What did you do in your holiday? Are you busy now?
Here are my best regards to you and your family
Yours
