In the United States the most popular form of folkdancing since the early days has been square dancing. Inearly times， when men and women worked in groups to build a barn(谷仓) or harvestcrops， they danced when the work was done. The musiccame from the violin for the most part，but if there wasno one to play a musical instrument， clapping(拍手)wasused to produce the rhythm(节奏)by which to dance. The early settlers danced in a store， in a barn， or in afarm kitchen.

A square is formed by four couples who stand facingthe centre ofthe square. Each couple stand on one side ofthe square， the boy on the left and the girlon the right.

The caller is an important part of the dance， sincehe tells the dancers which steps to do. If the dancers donot know the steps， he teaches them. It takes time tolearn to be a good caller， and good callers are always indemand.

These are the names of some of the steps the dancersdo: Form a square; Circle; Honour your partner; Swingyour partner;Form a star. There are many more. As thecallers tell the dancers what to do next， they move toform the pattern(图形)he calls.

Large or small numbers of people can dance at onetime. Sometimes 800 or 1，000 people may be dancing atthe same time. Or there may be only one square of eightpeople.

Special clothes are worn by some when dancing.This makes the dance more colourful to watch. The special clothesare different from place to place. Women often wear fullskirts of various colours with a pretty blouse. Men havecoloured 

shirts and western trousers that they wear onlywhen square dancing. In some country areas， everyonewears his best clothes.

Today in
