Facebook (脸谱网) friends cannot replace the real thing, say psychologists(心理学家).

People are happier and laugh 50% more when they talk face to face with friends or via webcam (web camera) than when they use social networking sites, a study has found.

Dr. Roberts, a famous lecturer at the University of Chester, said such websites don't appear to help make true friendships. Based on two questionnaires(调查表), he found there was no link between Facebook use and people with larger groups of friends.

Dr. Roberts, whose work will be presented at the British Psychological Society conference in Harrogate, said, "The bottom line conclusion is that our relationships are not dependent on the quantity of communication. They depend on quality, and even Skype(一种网络即时语音沟通工具) is better at increasing the quality of our communication than time on Facebook." Even talking on the phone or texting does not make people feel as good as sharing a smile, the research says. The studies suggest quality, not quantity, of communication is the most important for keeping friends for life.

People find the most satisfying relationships come from a small number of close friends, with an outer "ring" of 10 significant others. With these people, it doesn't matter what type of social media you use for communication. But people who want to "contact the world at large" using Facebook can be disappointed because they spread themselves too thinly, claim researchers.

In a third study, Dr. Roberts asked people to communicate with friends face to face or via Skype and keep a 14-day diary. This was compared with communicating via phone, text messages or social networking sites. People communicating face to face on Skype were 50% more likely to laugh, and they rated themselves as significantly happier.

66. What is Dr. Roberts's attitude towards the use of Facebook?

England---a letter from a passenger on the Titanic, written just hours before the ship hit an iceberg and sank on its first voyage , was sold at auction(拍卖) on April 26th for 119,000 pounds ($200,000).

It was written by British survivors Esther Hart and her seven-year-old daughter Eva who had been travelling in Second Class on their way to a new life in Canada. Henry Aldridge and Son, who conducted the auction, said the price was believed to be a record for a Titanic letter.” There was a lot of interest,” said a spokesman. “We have sold other letters from the Titanic but none have reached anything like this price.”

The Titanic sank on the night of Sunday, 14 April, 1912, on the fifth day of its first voyage from Southampton to New York. Over 1,500 passengers and crew lost their lives in the tragedy (悲剧),including Hart’s husband Benjamin.

The letter, written on special letter paper headed On board RMS“Titanic”and put in an envelope printed with the White Star Line flag, was to be sent to Esther’s mother in Chadwell Heath, East London. It tells how Esther Hart was suffering the effects of sea-sickness and feeling the cold.

“My dear ones,” it begins. “As you see, it is Sunday afternoon and we are resting in the library after lunch. I was very bad all day yesterday, could not eat or drink and was sick all the while, but today I have got over it. The sailor say we have had a wonderful journey up to now. It is very nice weather but very windy and cold.” She adds, “ They say we may get to New York on Tuesday night but we are really due early Wednesday morning. I shall write as soon as we get there.”

The letter, with a cheery goodbye from young Eva at the bottom, survived because it had been in the pocket of her husband’s coat, which was given to his wife to keep her warm as they escaped from the ship. He didn’t survive the disaster. Esther and Eva, who later recalled the ship’s last hours in her autobiography(自传) Shadow of the Titanic, were rescued by HMS Carpathia.

In her book, Eva wrote of her mother, “The letter she had written that Sunday afternoon on the Titanic was never posted. She found it in the pocket of my father’s sheepskin-lined coat after we had been rescued and for her it was to remain a constant reminder of that tragic journey and the loss of her husband.

Eva died in 1996, aged 91.
