第三部分:阅读理解(每小题2分,满分30分)

阅读下列短文,掌握其大意,然后从所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项.

A

It took firemen almost an hour to cut through the wreckage (残骸) of the car. By the time they reached the driver,Wong,he had died. Seconds before the crash happened, the traffic on the road was flowing smoothly, and Wong was an experienced driver in a sturdy car. What could have caused the tragedy? Alcohol. After Wong had drunk four cans of beer, his physical and mental reactions had slowed. He had a false feeling of confidence. Then he lost control, hitting a fire hydrant and a lamp post.

In almost every other developed country, Wong might have thought twice about getting behind the wheel and setting off in his car after drinking beer. His passengers might have refused to join him. Would you fly with a drunk pilot? Laws and public campaigns against drink-driving in many countries have changed people's lifestyles and saved thousands of lives. Drink-drivers are regarded as potential killers. In some countries, police on roadsides pull over motorists and check whether they have been drinking or not.

In 1995, about 7 % of drivers killed in road accidents in Hong Kong were drink-driving. But this does not tell us the full extent of the problem because it does not show the number of motorists and pedestrians (行人) killed by drink¬ drivers who survived their crash. In reality then, the number of people killed as a result of drink-driving must be much higher. But in 1995, only five people were prosecuted (起诉) for being drunk and incapable of controlling a vehicle.

56. Mr . Wong crashed his car because __________.

A. he had been drinking beer        B. his car was faulty

57.The underlined sentence" Would you fly with a drunk pilot?" questions whether we would_____________.

A. stay with a person we dislike           B. fly on a plane if we were drunk

B. Drink-driving is getting worse and worse in Hong Kong.

Dear Friend,

The recent success of children's books has made the general public aware that there's a huge market out there.

And there's a growing need for new writers trained to create the $3 billion worth of children's books bought each year ... plus stories and articles needed by over 650 publishers of magazines for children and teenagers.

Who are these needed writers? They're ordinary folks like you and me.ks.5u

But am I good enough?

I was once where you might be now. My thoughts of writing had been pushed down by self-doubt, and I didn't know where to turn for help.

Then, I accepted a free offer from the Institute to test my writing aptitude (潜能), and it turned out to be the inspiration I needed.

The promise that paid off

The Institute made the same promise to me that they will make to you, if you show basic writing ability:

You will complete at least one manuscript (手稿 ) suitable to hand in to a publisher by the time you finish our course.

I really didn't expect any publication before I finished the course, but that happened. I sold three stories. And I soon discovered that was not unusual at the Institute. Since graduation, I have authored 34 nationally published children's books and over 300 stories and articles.

Free test and brochure

We offer a free aptitude test and will send you a copy of our brochure describing our recognized home-study courses on the basis of one-on-one training.

Realize your writing dream today. There's nothing sadder than a dream delayed until it fades forever.

Sincerely,

Kristi Holl, Instructor

Jamie Oliver has been invited by Gordon Brown to prepare a banquet(宴会)at No.10 for President Barack Obama and other leaders of the G20, offering a cut-price menu to reflect times when trade and industry are far from prosperous and the rate of employment is decreasing.

Downing Street sources say Oliver, the well-known chef, will cook using “honest high-street products” and avoid expensive or “fancy” ingredients (材料).

The prime minister is trying to avoid a repeat of the embarrassment last year when he sat down to an 18-course banquet at a Japanese summit to discuss world food shortages.

Obama,President Nicolas Sarkozy of France,Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany and other leaders will be served by apprentices (学徒) from the Fifteen London, a restaurant Oliver founded to help train young people in poverty in order to make a living by mastering a skill.ks.5u

Brown wants the dinner to reflect the emphasis of the London summit, which he hopes will lead to an agreement to lift the world out of recession. “To be invited to cook for such an important group of people, who are trying to solve some of the world’s major problems, is really a privilege,” said Oliver.

“I’m hoping the menu I'm working on will show British food and produce is some of the best in the world, but also show we have pioneered a high-quality apprentice scheme at Fifteen London that is giving young people a skill to be proud of..”

What is eBay? The simple answer is that it's a global trading platform (平台) where nearly anyone can trade practically anything. People can sell and buy all kinds of products and goods, including cars, movies and DVDs, sporting goods, travel tickets, musical instruments, clothes and shoes---the list goes on and on.

The idea came from Peter Omidyar, who was born in Paris and moved to Washington when he was still a child. At high school, he became very interested in computer programming and after graduating from Tuft University in 1988, he worked for the next few years as a computer engineer. In his free time he started eBay as a kind of hobby, at first offering the service free by word of mouth. By 1996 there was so much traffic on the website that he had to upgrade (升级) and he began charging a fee to members. Joined by a friend, Peter Skoll, and in 1998 by his capable CEO, Meg Whitman, he has never looked back. Even in the great.com crashes of the late 1990s, eBay has gone from strength to strength. It is now one of the ten most visited online shopping websites on the Internet.

eBay sells connections, not goods, putting buyer and seller into contact with each other. All you have to do is take an e-photo, write a description, fill out a sales form and you are in business: the world is your market place .Of course for each item (商品) sold eBay gets a percentage and that is great deal of money. Every day there are more than sixteen million items listed on eBay and eighty percent of the items are sold.

69. From “he has never looked back “in Paragraph 2, we learn that Peter______.

A. did not feel lonely                    B. was always hopeful

C. became more and more successful        did not think about the past

70. How does eBay make money from its website?

A. By bringing acallers together.           B. By charging for each sale

C. By listing items on line                 By making e-photos.

第四部分:任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格内填入最恰当的词.( 每空1词)

In a society such as America or Canada, which has many national, religious, and cultural differences, people highly value individualism—the differences among people. Teachers place a lot of importance on the qualities that make each student special. The educational systems in these countries show these values. Students do not memorize information. Instead, they work individually and find answers themselves. There is often discussion in the classroom. At an early age, students learn to form their own ideas and opinions.

In most Asian societies, by contrast (对比), the people have the same language, history, and culture. Perhaps for this reason, the educational system in much of the Orient (东方) reflects society’s belief in group goals and purposes rather than individualism. Children in China, Japan, and Korea often work together and help one another on assignments. In the classroom, the teaching methods are often very formal. The teacher lectures, and the students listen. There is not much discussion. Instead, the students recite rules or information that they have memorized.

There are advantages and disadvantages to both of these systems of education. For example, one advantage to the system in Japan is that students there learn much more math and science than American students do by the end of high school. They also study more hours each day and more days each year than North Americans do. The system is difficult, but it prepares students for a society that values discipline (纪律) and self-control. There is, however, a disadvantage. Memorization is an important learning method in Japanese schools, yet many students say that after an exam, they forget much of the information that they have memorized.

The advantage of the educational system in North American, on the other hand, is that students learn to think for themselves. The system prepares them for a society that values creative ideas. There is , however, a disadvantage. When students graduate from high school, they haven’t memorized as many basic rules and facts as students in other countries have.
