Step 3. Pre-reading
First create a situation that one day someone gives you a large sum of money let the students imagine what will they do . Then discuss with the students on whether their use of the money is right or wrong. This design is aimed to know the student’s attitude towards money and then help them to think deeply.
Second ask the students whether they have read the million pound bank note and let them guess what may happen to such a sum of money.
Purpose: turn the students’ attention to the reading part make them curious about the things happening.
Step 4. Fast reading
Read the passage as quickly as they can. I will show the questions on the screen and let them get the main idea of act I scene 3:
Method: Read the text individually use question—and—answer activity.
Purpose: Improve the students’ reading ability.
Understand the general idea of this scene.
Step 5. Intensive reading
Let the ss Read the passage carefully again and answer some detailed questions on the screen.
Such as 1. How did Henry Adams come to London ?
2. When could Henry open the letter ?
It is also called depth reading or study reading. It means reading for detailed information.
Purpose: Further understand the text Train further reading ability to find out some difficult sentences and details of the text.
Step6. Post-reading
First I will give some more subject questions to make ss discuss and then talk about their ideas about the characters in this play.
Such as: What do you think of the brothers and Henry ?
Purpose to improve their ability of understanding. Make sure that the ss can understand the play clearly
Second read the text again and discuss about the characteristics of the play find out some words or sentences to support.
Purpose make the ss know something about the play help understand the play better.
Step7. movie-watching and retelling
See the movie of this scene.
Give the ss some key words and let them retell this play as vivid as possible.
Purpose make the class not boring improve their listening skills, let the ss have a chance to show themselves.
Step 8. Homework
Prepared for acting out this scene in groups of five( a narrator, the servant, the brothers and Henry.)
Finish the exercises of learning about language on p20,21 .
Purpose of my designing: I think homework is so important that the Ss should speak English as much as they can after class. It is necessary for the Ss to do some extensive exercises after class to consolidate the knowledge they learned.
Part 4. The conclusion
The whole process I think there are two difficulties. First the discussion of the use of money it maybe a little hard to lead the ss to the high aspect (such as make charity used to education…) so I may use some pictures of the poor or the news report to lead them. Second the reading part there maybe too much questions which will make ss tired of reading many times then I may bring forward the movie in this part to make them excited.
In a word I want to make the design inductive, instructive and artistic. That’s all. Thank you.
