From old times, India has been a good friend to China.

Premier Wen Jiabao’s visit to India this week takes this friendship to a new high. He said 2006 will be the “Year of China-India Friendship”. The two big Asian countries now work more closely on border problems, trade (贸易) and IT.

India is an interesting and mysterious country with a long history. Around 2,000 BC, Indian civilization(文明),was born. It is one of the four oldest civilizations in the wor ld.

India is also the birthplace of Buddhism(佛教).

A famous Chinese novel, “A Journey to the West”, is about a Chinese monk who tried very hard to learn about Buddhism from India. The book comes from a true story. Xuanzang, a Buddhist monk, was sent to India by the King of the Tang Dynasty. After many years, he brought back lots of Buddhist books. The name “India” was first used by Xuanzang in his work.

Today, religion is still an important part of Indian culture. There are many religions there. Most Indian people believe in Hinduism (印度教).In India, cows are very special animals because Hinduism says they are holy (神圣的). So Indians don’t sell or eat beef.

Like China, India is a developing country with a large population. It has about 1.03 billion people compared to China’s 1.3 billion. More than two thirds of the Indians still live a poor life in the countryside. India has no birth control so its population is growing fast. By 2030, India could even have more people than China.

Hindi(印地语) is the mother tongue of Indian people. But Britain took India in 1757 and stayed there until 1947. Because of this, English slowly became the other official language.

61. What’s the Chinese meaning of “A Journey to the West”?

A.《西行漫记》 B.《西游记》 C.《印度之行》 D.《马可波罗游记》

62. Why don’t Indians sell or eat beef?

A. Because they don’t like it. B. Because they are afraid of getting ill.

C. Because they see cows as holy animals. D. Because beef is very expensive.

63. India has a large population and it keeps growing. What reason does the story give?

A. It is a big country. B. It doesn’t have birth control.

C. More foreign people go to live in India. D. None of the above.

64. What is /are official languages of India?

A. Hindi. B. English. C. Both of the above. D. None of the above.

65. What’s the result of Premier Wen’s visit to India?

A. The two countries will work more closely on trade.

B. India will carry out (实施) birth control.

C. It will make India develop faster.

D. It will make the friendship between the two countries deeper.

D

A rabbit is running into its hole. You may ask, “What happened?”

Well, when a rabbit sees something dangerous, it runs away. Its tail moves up and down as it

runs. When other rabbits see this tail moving up and down, they run too. They know that there is

danger. The rabbit has told them something without making a sound. It has given them a signal.

Many other animals use this kind of language. When a bee found some food, it goes back to

his home. It cannot tell the other bees where the food is by speaking to them, but it does a little

dance in the air. This tells the bees where the food is.

Some animals say things by making sounds. A dog barks, for example, when a stranger

comes near. A cat purrs (发出呼噜呼噜的声音)when pleased. Some birds make several different

sounds, each with its own meaning.

But human beings have something that no animals have –-- a large number of words about

things, actions, feelings or ideas. We are able to give each other information, to tell or inform other

people what is in our mind or how we feel. By writing words down we can remind ourselves of

the things what have happened, or send messages to people far away. No animals can do this. No

animals has the wonderful power of language.

No one knows how man learned to make words. Somehow he learned to make them. As

centuries went by , he made more and more new words. This is what we mean b y language.

People living in different countries made different kinds of words. Today there are about

fifteen hundred different languages in the world. A very large English dictionary, for example,

contains four or five hundred thousand words. But we do not know all these. The words we know

are called vocabulary. We should try to make our vocabulary larger. Read as many books as

possible. When we meet a new word, look it up in the dictionary. A dictionary is the most useful

book.

66. When a rabbit gives the other rabbits a signal of danger, it _______.

A. runs into its hole

B.stops to move its tail

The word “day” has two meanings. When we talk about the number of days in a year, we are using “day” to mean 24 hours. But when we talk about day and night, we are using “day” to mean the time between sunrise and sunset. Since the earth looks like a ball, the sun can shine on only half of it at a time. Always one half of the earth is having day and the other half night. A place is moved from day into night and from night into day over and over by the spinning(旋转) of the earth. At the equator(赤道) day and night are sometimes the same length. They are each twelve hours long. The sun rises at 6 in the morning and sets at 6 in the evening. For six months the North Pole is tilted(倾斜) toward the sun. In those months the Northern Hemisphere(半球) gets more hours of sunlight than the Southern Hemisphere. Days are longer than nights. South of the equator nights are longer than days. For the other six months the North Pole is tilted away from the sun. Then the Southern Hemisphere gets more sunlight. Days are longer than night. North of the equator nights are longer than days. Winter is the season of long nights. Summer is the season of long days.

You speak, write a letter, make a telephone. Your words carry a message. People communicate with words. Do you think you can communicate without words? A smile on your face shows you are happy or friendly. Tears in your eyes tell others that you are sad.

When you put up your hands in class, the teacher knows you want to say something or ask questions. You shake your head, and people know you are saying "No". You nod and people know you are saying "Yes". Other things can also carry messages. For example, a sign at the bus helps you to know which bus to take. A sign on the door helps you where to go in or out. Have you ever thought that there are a lot of signs around you and that you receive messages from them all the time? People can communicate in many other ways. An artist can use his drawing to tell beautiful mountains, about the blue sea and many other things. Books are written to tell about all the wonderful things in the world and also about people and their ideas. Books, magazines, TV, radio and films all help us communicate with others. They can help us to know what is going on in the world and what other people are thinking about.

Just as in face-to-face communication, there are some basic rules of behavior(行为) that should be followed on the Internet. The basic rule is simple: treat others in the same way you would want to be treated. ①Imagine how you’d feel if you were in the other person’s shoes.

For anything you’re about to send: ask yourself, “ Would I say that to the person’s face?” If the answer is no, rewrite and reread. If someone in the chat room is rude to you, you needn’t to fire back. You should either ignore(不理睬) the person, or use your chat software to block their messages. Remember to respect the beliefs and opinions of others in the chat room.

②Offer advice when asked by newcomers, as they may not be sure what to do or how to communicate. When someone makes a mistake, be kind about it. If you do decide to tell someone about the mistake, point it out politely. At the same time, if you find you are wrong, be sure to correct yourself and apologize to those that you have offended(冒犯).③询问别人诸如年龄、性别和家庭情况等隐私问题是不礼貌的。Unless you know the person very well, and you are both comfortable with sharing personal information, or don’t ask such questions.

What do people do with their old, out-of-date but still useful computers? Most people don’t know what to do with them. Many old computers are put away in homes. Many more are simply thrown out with the rubbish.

Finally, some companies are thinking of ways to bring down the number of old computers. Sony has agreed to help recycle old Sony products(产品). Dell, Hewlett-Packard and other companies now also take back some old computers.

In some countries, laws are being passed, too. Computer compan ies will have to collect and recycle their used products. And 70% of computer waste must be recycled. The idea behind the laws is that computer companies themselves should pay the cost. That will encourage them to make computers that are easier and cheaper to repair and upgrade(升级).

Yet while many people are throwing away good computers, others cannot afford them at all. Hundreds of organizations are working to solve this problem. They collect and repair old computers. Some also teach others how to repair computers.

The computers then go to schools, charities and people who need them. Giving a used computer to one of these organizations can turn one person’s rubbish into someone else’s useful things—and cut down on waste, too.

Another said it was from a police officer, because the police protected people. The teacher went to Douglas’ desk and asked him whose hand it was. The little boy looked away and said, “It’s yours, Miss Rainbow. Do you remember the times you took my hand and walked with me here or there? You often said, ‘Take my hand, Douglas. We’ll go outside.’ or, ‘Let me show you how to hold your pencil.’ or, ‘Let’s do this together.’ I was most thankful for your hand.”

Todd was rather looking forward to his first journey by underground in London. He had heard a great deal about it from his friends who had already been to England. They all advised him not to travel alone the first time. But Todd is the kind of person who never listens to anyone's advice.

Todd entered the station shortly after five in the afternoon. This is a bad time to travel in London, by both bus and train, because crowds of people go home from work at this hour. He had to join a long queue (队伍) of people waiting for tickets. When at last his turn came, he had some difficulty making the man understand the name of the station he wanted to go to. The people behind him began to complain impatiently at the delay. However, he got the right ticket in the end and, by asking several people the way, he also found the right platform, which was already packed tight with people. He did not manage to get on the first train, but he was able to move nearer to .the edge of the platform so as to be in a better position to get on the next one. When later train came, Todd was swept forward onto the train by the rush of the people from behind. The doors closed and the train moved off before he was able to get his breath back. He was unable to see the names of the stations where the train stopped, but he had counted the number of stops so that he knew exactly where to get off. His station was the sixth along the line.

When the train reached the sixth station, he got off, feeling relieved that his journey had been so easy. But he was surprised to see that he had got off at a station that he had never heard of! He explained his difficulty to a man standing on the platform. With a look of amusement on his face, the man told Todd he had traveled on a train going in the wrong direction.

As he was digging, other helpless parents and the firemen arrived and tried to pull him off the ruins, saying, “It’s too late! They’re all dead! There’s nothing you can do! ” To them he replied with one line, “Are you going to help me now? ” And then he kept on digging.
