“Most traffic accidents shouldn’t happen. They happen because people are careless. A frequent cause of traffic accidents is speed. Some people drive too quickly. This means that if they have to stop suddenly, they cannot stop quickly enough to avoid hitting other vehicles or people. You need to remember this when you are crossing the street or walking along the sidewalk.”
“It’s not only drivers who cause accidents, however. People on foot-pedestrians, and bicycle riders often cause accidents, too. Pedestrians sometimes walk out into the street without looking. You should always look on both sides before stepping into the street.”
“Do any of you ride a bike? Bicycle riders can cause accidents by changing directions suddenly or without warning other road users. Before you turn left, for example, you should check behind you to make sure there aren’t any cars, trucks or buses coming. You should show with your left hand to tell that you want to turn left. You should not turn until the street is clear.”

A famous study was done in a school by a professor (教授) from a university. At the start of the school year, the teachers were given the names of five children. They were told that these five were the most excellent students in the class. But the fact was that these students were only average (中等),and they were not the best students at all. Well, guess what? At the end of the year, all the five average students scored among the highest in the class.
What made these average students change so much to become top students? The only difference was the change in their teachers’ attitude (态度). Because the teachers believed that these five kids were the top students, they expected more from them. And so these five average students began to believe and expect more from themselves. So they worked harder to do as well as they could.
Do you know? If you expect the best from people, they’ll usually want to give you their best. A great leader said, “Treat (对待) a person just how he appears to be on the outside, and you’ll make him even worse. But treat a person like he’s already a success, and you’ll help make him the best he can be.”
Like the true story of 7-year-old Johnny, his teacher got so angry with him that one day she said, “Johnny, you’re the naughtiest boy in this class. I’m sure you’ll never change.” The next year Johnny had a new teacher. And on the first day of class, she talked with Johnny after school and said, “Johnny, I’ve heard a lot about you! But do you know that I don’t believe a word of it.” And every day after that, this new teacher treated Johnny as if he was one of the smartest students even when Johnny did naughty things. Later on, Johnny became a school leader. Because that’s the power of our belief (信任) and attitude toward children.
61. The professor started his research by_________.

You may be a top student, but imagine if you have to leave alone, will life be as easy as when your parents are around? Few teenagers are able to give a positive answer to this question. The first thing that worries Xiao Hua is where to find food. The 14-year-old student says that she knows little about cooking.
“The only thing I can make to fill my stomach is tomato and egg soup, and I think many of my classmates are the same,” she said.
Although she believes that basic(基础)living skills such as cooking and washing clothes are a must in creating a self-made person, the girl doesn’t think teenagers are given enough opportunities to practice.
“I would like to learn in summer holidays before I enter high school. But when we are in junior middle school, parents do almost everything for us.” She said.
For most teenagers like Xiao Hua, it’s only when they have to leave home do they decide to learn some living skills. They are too busy with their heavy schoolwork to think about such stuff.
However, Xiao Ming, a 15-year-old boy, doesn’t think so. “We should develop these skills day by day, just in case of unexpected situation,” he said.
A few days ago, his mother broke her leg and Xiao Ming started to cook for the family. Luckily, he had learned to cook a few dishes from his mom before the accident.
Xiao Ming’s school is going to start an elective course(选修课)in cooking, in which lots of special cooking skills will be taught. It has interested many students and Xiao Ming wishes he had time to take it.
“I’m afraid it’s too much for most of the students because as far as I know, few have simple kitchen knowledge,” he said.
In his opinion, many teenagers depend too much on their parents, and there is much more to learn than cooking, like “cleaning up your room or even dressing yourself in a right way.”

Everyone needs friends. There is an old saying “Friends are God's way of taking care of us.” But how do you find real friendship and keep it?
The American writer Sally Seamans tells young students some smart ways to find friends. Sally says finding friendship is just like planting a tree. You plant the seed and take care of it to make it grow.
First, you should choose a friend. What makes a Good friend? It is not because a person has money or good looks. A good friend should be kind and patient. For example, if you have a bad day, a good friend should listen to your complaints and do his or her best to help. To make a friend, you can not be too shy. You should make each other happy and share your lives. But things cannot always be happy. Even the best have fights. What should you do when you have a fight with your friend? You have to talk to him or her. When there is no one around, have an honest talk. If he or she doesn't want to talk, you could write a letter.
There are three steps to being friends again:
Tell him or her how you are feeling ; say what your friend has done wrong, and explain why you did this or that. Remember that friendship is the most important thing in your life.

As space science develops, man has learned more and more about space. Space is not only amazing but also dangerous. While working in space, spacemen are facing danger as well as success.

Scientists are watching and reporting any possible danger all the time. They are working on helpful ways to do with space junk.

In one way, it may be thought that failure (失败)is a part of life. In another, failure may be re¬garded as a step towards success.
The "spider-story" is often told as an example of this. Robert Bruce, leader of the Scots in the 13th century, was hiding in a hole on a hill from the English. He watched a spider(蜘蛛) making a web. Bruce is said to have got confidence from this and to have gone on to beat the English. Edison, too, the inventor of the light bulb(电灯泡) , made hundreds of models that failed before he found the right way to make one.
So what? First, always think about your failure. What caused it? Were you in high spir¬it then? What can you change so that things will go right the next time?
Second, is the goal(目标) you are trying to reach the right one? Try to do some thinking about what your real goals may be. Think about this question: "If I am successful in this, where will it get me?" This may help to prevent failure in the things you shouldn't be doing anyway.
The third thing to remember about failure is that it's a part of life. Learn to "live with yourself” even though you may have failed. Remember, "You can't win them all. “

A. people who fail are not lonely B. animals can help people sometimes

C. one should take failures seriously D. one should learn lessons from failures

Then if the host (男主人) or hostess(女主人) or both of them come in a car to get their guest for dinner, the guest should sit at the front seat and leave the back seat though there is no people sitting on it.
