Idioms are phrases and sentences that do not mean exactly what they say. Even if you know the meaning of each word you see or hear, you may not understand the idiom because you don’t understand the culture behind it.

For example, if an American boy asks his mother what’s for dinner tomorrow, she may say “I’ll play it by ear”, that means she doesn’t have plans for dinner and she will decide later. “Play by ear” used to mean playing music using the sheet music, but now people often use it when they’re not talking about music.

There’re many idioms in English. If you learn to use them, your English will be more vivid and colorful. English idioms are more common in spoken English. They can be difficult to remember sometimes. Next time when you hear somebody saying to you, “Give me a hand”, you don’t necessarily stretch out your hand to him/her, but you do need to be helpful. And when the situation is out of hand, you usually can do very little to manage all that. What about a green hand? It’s not about the color of your hand! You’re a green hand when you are very new at your work and don’t have much experience. If you and your partner always work together hand in glove, you two definitely work together very well.

Can you guess the meanings of some common English idioms to do with parts of your body?

A. a phrase or a sentence that means exactly what the words say

B. a phrase or a sentence that doesn’t mean exactly what every word says

52. If a mother says “I’ll play it by ear” to talk about the dinner, she means _______.

A. she will cook dinner while listening to music at the same time

B. she doesn’t hear what others are talking about.

C. she will play music using the sheet music instead of cooking dinner

D. She doesn’t have plans for dinner and will decide later

53. When one says “Can you give me a hand?”, he means _______.

A. he needs to hold your hand. B. he works well with you

C. he needs your help D. he is a new comer and can’t help with the situation

56 When a teacher assigns a lot of homework, Domenica Roman draws up a timetable, dividing the assignment into small parts. “It’s like eating a steak(牛排),” she says. “You chew it one bite at a time.”

57 One student put a vocabulary list in the bathroom. He learned a new word every day while brushing his teeth. Another student used the time to remember biology terms while practicing running.

58 In high school, McCray ran track, played football and was in the band and orchestra. “I was so busy that I couldn’t waste time looking for a pencil or missing paper. I kept everything right where I could put my hands on it,” he says.

59 In an international class, Asian-Americans, on average, scored higher than other students. The teacher found that the Asian-Americans discussed homework problems together, tried different ways to work out the problems and explained their solutions to one another.

60 Christi is an excellent student at the University of California. If her math teacher assigns five problems, she does ten. If the history teacher assigns eight pages of reading, she reads twelve. “Part of learning is practicing,” she says. “And the more you practice, the more you learn.”

When I was growing up in America, I was ashamed of my mother’s Chinese English. Because of her English, she was often treated unfairly. People in department stores, at banks, and at restaurants did not take her seriously, pretended not to Understand her, or even acted as if they did not hear her.

My mother has realized the disadvantages of her English as well. When I was fifteen, she used to have me call people on phone to pretend I was she. I was forced to ask for information or even to yell at people who had been rude to her. One time I had to call her stockbroker (股票经纪人).I said in a voice that was not very convincing, “This is Mrs.Tan.”And my mother was standing beside me, whispering loudly, “Why he doesn’t send me the cheek. It’s already two weeks late.”

And then ,in perfect English I said : “I’m getting rather anxious .You agreed to send the check two weeks ago, but it hasn’t arrived.” Then she talked more loudly. “What does he want? I’ll come to New York and say it in front of his boss.”And so I turned to the stockbroker again, “I can’t accept any more excuses. If I don’t receive the check immediately, I have to speak to your manager when I am in New York next week.”

The next week we ended up in New York. While I was sitting there red-faced, my mother, the real Mrs.Tan, was shouting to his boss in her broken English. When I was a teenager, my mother’s broken English embarrassed me. But now, I see it differently. To me, my mother’s English is perfectly clear, perfectly natural. It is my mother tongue. Her language, as I hear it, is clear and direct. It was the language that helped me form the way I saw things, expressed ideas, and made sense of the world.

When I was younger, bedtime was always my favourite part of the day. Wearing soft pajamas and with Lan, my stuffed monkey, in my arms, I felt no pressure at all.

I named Lan after my uncle when I compared Lan’s long arms and legs to his. One night I ran up to Uncle Lan at a family party and told him I had named my monkey after him. His eyebrows wrinkled in confusion, then a chuckle(哈哈笑)escaped his lips. I guess he didn’t understand how important it was to me.

Even if Uncle Lan didn’t think my monkey was special, I certainly did. I dressed him in a white baby nightgown. My mother thought that Lan was the best-dressed stuffed animal in the world. Yes, he was certainly a fashionable creature. The strong cologne(科隆香水)I used on him years ago makes him still smell “pretty”.

For a long time, Lan went everywhere with me. He was my best friend, and I told him everything. But when I turned twelve, I realized I was too old for stuffed animals. I thought people would think I was babyish, so I put him in the cupboard with the rest of my teddy bears and dolls. I begged him to understand why I was doing this, but at the same time I longed to talk to him again.

It took me several years to realize that it was OK to miss Lan. I know now that maturity(成熟)doesn’t only mean growing up and taking on more responsibility. It also means holding on to your childhood and acting young sometimes.

Lan has been with me since I was six years old. Holding him in my arms connects me to my past and my present as I continue to grow and understand myself.

B.He had some teddy bears and dolls.

B. Maturity doesn’t mean growing up and taking on more responsibility.

C. One should keep to his childhood and act young sometimes even when he has grown up.

D. Human beings should be kind to animals.

50. What can we infer from the text?

第一节:阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中选出最佳选项。

Every day when I enter the classroom, I will take a look at the wall beside my seat. You will find nothing special about this old wall if you just look at it. But for the students in my class, it is a special wall. Take a good look at it, and you will get to know the real feelings and thoughts of us, the 9th graders.

In the middle of the wall, there is a big “VICTORY”. It was written in pencil. I guess it must have been written by someone who got a good mark in an exam.

A little higher above the formulas, there is a poem. It only has two sentences. It reads: All those sweet memories have disappeared. Like tears dropping in the heavy rain.

Oh! It must have been written at the end of the last semester in middle school. Classmates had to leave school and good friends had to part. What a sad poem!

If you “explore” the wall more carefully, you will find many other interesting things, like a crying face, or a happy face, and other patterns(图案). There are still some patterns and letters that I can’t understand, but they all show the feeling of the students who drew them.

For years, the wall has witnessed(目睹) all the things that have happened in the classroom. I don’t know how it will be next year, two years from now, or even ten years from now. But I hope more smiling faces will be drawn on it.

No one is glad to hear that his body has to be cut open by a surgeon(外科医生) and part of it is taken out. Today, however, we needn’t worry about feeling pain during the operation. The sick person falls into a kind of sleep, and when he awakes, the operation is finished. But these happy conditions are fairly new. It is not many years since a man who had to have an operation felt all its pain.

Long ago, operations had usually to be done while the sick man could feel everything. The sick man had to be held down on a table by force while the doctors did their best for him. He could feel all the pain if his leg or arm was being cut off, and his fearful cries filled the room and the hearts of those who watched.

Soon after 1770, Josept Priestley discovered a gas which is now called “laughing gas”. Laughing gas became known in America. Young men and women went to parties to try it. Most of them spent their time laughing, but one man at a party, Horace Wells, noticed that people didn’t seem to feel pain when they were using this gas. He decided to make an experiment on himself. He asked a friend to help him.

Wells took some of the gas, and his friend pulled out one of Well’s teeth. Wells felt no pain at all. As he didn’t know enough about laughing gas, he gave a man less gas than he should have. The man cried out with pain when his tooth was being pulled out.

Wells tried again, but this time he gave too much of the gas, and the man died. Wells never forgot this terrible event.

At 2:30 on December 5, 1945, five US Navy (海军) training planes took off in clear weather from the base Lauderdale, Florida. The planes flew east over the coast--- and disappeared. The group was Flight 19, on a run between Florida and Bahamas. Taylor was the group leader. At about 3:40, Taylor reported that his compasses(指南针) were not reading properly. The other planes followed their leader aimlessly, firs east, then west, then northeast over the ocean, as Taylor tried to make sure of the direction by radio. Then, suddenly Taylor was heard to give orders to dive.

Quickly, two giant (very large) Martin seaplanes were sent up to search for Flight 19. Several hours later, the wind became strong and visibility(能见度)dropped. A return to base was ordered. But only one of the Martin seaplanes landed. Four days later, the Navy and Coast(海岸部队)combed a 100,000 square-mile area with more than 100 planes and ships. No sign was ever shown of the missing planes.

Today, people have noted the disappearance of many ships and planes in the southwest part of the North Atlantic and began to call this area the Bermuda Triangle(百慕大三角).

The points of the triangle are Bermuda, Puerto Rico(波多黎各) and a spot in the Gulf of Mexico(墨西哥湾), west of Florida. It is a two – faced water world of tiny island, bright beaches and beautiful waters. Yet thick fogs, powerful currents(急流)and sudden storms are hidden behind this smiling surface.

E. Answer the question(根据短文内容回答下列问题):(14分)

Quite a few people believe that the phases of the moon(月相)affect the behavior of human and other creatures. That is known as the lunar effect(月相效应). The lunar effect has been around for many centuries. The power of the moon is often used to explain a wide range of events, such as human insanity(精神错乱), and increases in violent crimes(暴力犯罪) and traffic accidents. According to some traditions, for example, before the coming of modern techniques, surgeons(外科医生) would refuse to operate on the full moon nights because of the increased risk of death of the patient through blood loss. The idea behind the lunar effect ahs even found its way into the news. For example, it has been said that the full moon may have influenced voters’(选民)behavior in the 2000 U.S. presidential election(总统大选).

Does the moon affect our behavior at all? Some people say it does. They say the moon causes the tides, so surely that the moon has an effect on people and we ourselves are full of the water, too. But scientists point out that the moon only affects unrestrained(不受控制的) waters, such as oceans. The water in our bodies isn’t even comparable(可比较). And over fifty years of research has shown nothing to prove the existence(存在) of a causative(引起联系的) link between the moon and areas such as mental illness, birth rates, crime, or accidents.

There is an explanation for why people link the full moon to unusual human behavior. The reason is that people have selective memories(选择性记忆). When something unusual happens and there is a full moon, people might notice the moon and think it is to be blamed.

99. What do quite a few people believe?

100. What is used to explain wide range of events?

101. Why would surgeons refuse to operate on the full moon nights?

102. Do some people say that the moon affect our behavior?

103. Scientists hardly agree that the moon affect people’s behavior, do they?

104. How long has the research on the lunar effect been done?

105. Why do people link the full moon to unusual human behavior?

答案:

99. They believe the phases of the moon. 100. The power of the moon.

101. Because they thought that it might increase the risk of death of the patients through blood loss. 102. Yes, they do. 103. No, they don't. 104. Over fifty years.

When you sit down with your family to eat a meal, do you ever wonder where and when the tradition of using chopsticks began?

People say that the first chopsticks were used in China 5,000 years ago. The practice became popular in Korea, Vietnam and Japan. Today they are a symbol (象征) of Asian culture. Of Asian countries, Japanese have a day to celebrate them. August 4th is Chopsticks Day in Japan. The different cooking traditions of Asia lead to different kinds of chopsticks. For example, the Japanese use sharp chopsticks because they eat a lot of fish. Sharp chopsticks are good for picking the fish from the bones.

Chopsticks are made from different kinds of material. Bamboo chopsticks are common because the material is easy to break apart and doesn’t burn easily. People also use wood and bone for chopsticks. Some rich people had theirs made from precious metals. Many kings used silver chopsticks, for it was believed that they would turn black if there was poison (毒) in the food.

There are also many table manners connected with chopsticks. For example, never stick your chopsticks upright in your rice bowl or tap on your bowl with your chopsticks. People believe this is impolite to the host.

It’s 2021. You feel sick, so you go to the doctor. She checks your fever, looks at your throat, and asks what you’re thinking these days. When you leave, she gives you some medicine, but also a list of thinking skills that you are supposed to practice daily. She says that the way you think is causing some of your illness.

Doctors and other scientists who study the human mind and try to explain why people believe in the way that they do, called psychologists, are starting to believe it. You know that your brain is connected to every part of your body through your nervous system (神经系统). Now scientists have proved that how you think and feel have an influence on the health of your body.

Stress (压力,紧张) is caused whenever there is a problem or a change in your life. Of course, everybody has stress more or less; nobody’s life is perfect. In fact, stress is necessary. Without stress, we would never learn anything or grow or change. We would probably be bored to death. But too much stress can hurt you. It can weaken your body’s protection so that you are more likely to catch diseases. It can even make you more likely to have an accident.

When you feel stress, your brain sends a message to your body to produce a chemical called adrenaline (肾上腺素). Adrenaline speeds up your breathing and your heart beat. Today you have a different kind of stress. Problems like endless homework or troubles with your family are the kind of things you can’t fight or run away from, so you don’t use up all that adrenaline. It just stays inside you. And that’s what can do something bad to you.

What can you do about stress? First, you can try to find ways to change things so you aren’t under so much stress. You can make a plan to finish homework or go to a doctor or a psychologist to try to work things out with your family or your friends. But sometimes you can’t change a stressful situation. Sometimes you don’t even want to. A big change might be a good change, but it will still be stressful.

E. Answer the questions (根据短文内容回答下列问题):(14分)

A long time ago, Milton S. Hershey, the creator of the popular chocolate bars, was dipped in (浸入) warm chocolate. I know all about it. My grandfather was there!

At nineteen, Hershey opened a candy business in Philadelphia (费城). Although it failed, he tried again in several other cities and succeeded with Crystal A Caramels. But Hershey was not satisfied with it. He did some experiments with chocolate and managed to sell his first chocolate bars in 1900. They were a great success. Three years later, Hershey built a factory to sell his chocolate bars.

Hershey was usually pleasant, kind and enjoyed a good joke. However, in his chocolate factory, he was serious with the workers. He was both respected and feared. His anger would burst out when things didn’t go as he’d expected, and workers would be fired (解雇) for mistakes.

My grandfather began working in the factory as a young man. His job was to push the vats (大桶) of warm chocolate to a storage area. To do this, he had to push the heavy vats up a ramp (斜坡) and across the walkway. One day, Hershey was taking a walk while my grandfather was pushing a vat of chocolate up the ramp. Suddenly, Hershey fell into the vat. Everyone else held their breath and ran up to pull him out. Grandfather was very frightened. Was he going to lose his job?

However, Hershey wasn’t angry. He said something in a low voice. Then he smiled. “It’s not your fault, son,” he said. “I need to watch where I’m going.” He put some chocolate in his mouth. “Mmm, that’s good,” he said. Everyone laughed. Hershey kept walking with the dripping chocolate. And Grandfather kept his job.

Now when you enjoy the taste of “Kisses” chocolate, do you think about the funny story of Mr. Hershey—my grandfather’s father?
