第三部分 阅读理解(共20小题,满分40分)

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C、D)中,选出最佳选项。

□A

When my interest shifted from space to the sea, I never expected it would cause such confusion among my friends, yet I can understand their feelings. As I have been writing and talking about space flight for the best part of 20 years, a sudden switch of interest to the depth of the sea does seem peculiar. To explain, I'd like to share my reasons behind this unusual change of mind. The first excuse I give is an economic one. Underwater exploration is so much cheaper than space flight. The first round-trip ticket to the moon is going to cost at least 10 billion dollars if you include research and development. By the end of this century, the cost will be down to a few million. On the other hand, the diving suit and a set of basic tools needed for skin-diving can be bought for 20 dollars. My second argument is more philosophical. The ocean, surprisingly enough, has many things in common with space. In their different ways, both sea and space are equally hostile. If we wish to survive in either for any length of time, we need to have mechanical aids. The diving suit helped the design of the space suit. The feeling and the emotions of a man beneath the sea will be much like those of a man beyond the atmosphere.

56. How did the speaker's frien ds respond to his change of interest?

A. They wanted to follow his example.

B. They fully supported his undertaking.

C. They were puzzled by his decision.

D. They were afraid he wasn't fully prepared.

57. In what way does the speaker think diving is similar to space travel7

A. They both attract scientists' attention.

B. They can both be quite challenging.

C. They are both thought-provoking (激发思考的).

D. They may both lead to surprising findings.

58. What is the speaker's purpose in giving this talk?

A. To show how simple the mechanical aids for diving can be.

B. To provide an excuse for his changeable character.

C. To explore the philosophical issues of space travel.

D. To explain why he took up underwater exploration.

□B

If you want to teach your children how to say sorry, you must be good at saying it yourself, especially to your own children. But how you say it can be quite tricky.

If you say to your children “I'm sorry I got angry with you, but...”What follows that “but”can render the apology ineffective: “I had a bad day” or “your noise was giving me a headache” leaves the person who has been injured feeling that he should be apologizing for his bad behavior in expecting an apology.

Another method by which people appear to apologize without actually doing so is to say“I'm sorry you're upset”; this suggests that you are somehow at fault for allowing yourself to get upset by what the other person has done.

Then there is the general, all covering apology, which avoids the necessity of identifying a specific: act that was particularly hurtful or insulting, and which the person who is apologizing should promise never to do again. Saying “I'm useless as a parent”does not commit a person to any specific improvement.

These pseudo-apologies (伪道歉) are used by people who believe saying sorry shows weakness. Parents who wish to teach their children to apologize should see it as a sign of strength, and therefore not resort to these pseudo-apologies.

But even when presented with examples of genuine contrition (悔悟) ,children still need help to become aware of the complexities of saying sorry. A three-year-old might need help in understanding that other children feel pain just as he does, and that hitting a playmate over the head with a heavy toy requires an apology. A six-year-old might need reminding that spoiling other children's expectations can require an apology. A 12-year-old might need to be shown that r aiding the biscuit tin without asking permission is acceptable, but that borrowing a parent's clothes without permission is not.

59. If a mother adds “but” to an apology,

A. she doesn't feel that she should have apologized

B. she does not realize that the child has been hurt

C. the child may find the apology easier to accept

D. the child may feel that he owes her an apology

60. According to the author, saying “I'm sorry you're upset” most probably means“______”

A. You have good reason to get upset

B. I'm aware you're upset, but I'm not to blame

C. I apologize for hurting your feelings

D. I'm at fault for making you upset

61. It is not advisable to use the general, all-covering apology because ______ .

A. it gets one into the habit of making empty promises

62. We learn from the last paragraph that in teaching children to say sorry ______.

□C

Once many years ago, I pulled a family out of a burning car somewhere in Wyoming. Last week 1 received a telephone call from a woman who could not stop crying as she told me that one of my stories had saved her son from committing suicide. In closing she called me a hero.

That got me thinking about what a hero is. Was I a hero because I pulled a family from a burning car? If so, how could I be a hero just because I wrote a story that saved someone's life?

Today I decided to look up the word “hero” in the dictionary to see exactly what it meant. It read “a person who does something brave”. As I read on, it also said“person who is good and noble”.

That statement impressed me more than the part about being brave. So I thought about something very important. Say I was walking into the local Wal-Mart Store and I happened to open, and hold the door for someone as a courtesy. As they passed me by, I say, “How are you today?”Most of the time that would be no big deal, but this time let's say it was for someone who was deeply depressed and near tile end of the rope. That may have very well been the only kindness or courtesy shown to them in a very long time. 新课 标第 一网

Having been near “the end of my rope”, after my marriage of twenty years ended, I was in such a condition. I was within hours trying to get up enough courage to end the pain and misery. When I returned home, someone had sent me a card in the mail which told me how much they would appreciate me as a friend. That wonderful card probably saved my life. That person, without even knowing it , saved a life and became a hero.

The many stories I kept writing in the following years saved the life of a teenage boy. In turn that makes the person who sent me the card a double hero. I suppose that is why I fight so hard to help the children now living in orphanages (孤儿院). Most children come out of these institutions with a very hard and bitter attitude against the world. The gifts we send them let them know that they have not been forgotten. Hopefully, most of them will never hurt anyone because of the kindness shown to them by those of us who cared. If it works, we will also become“heroes”.

Gee, who would have ever thought that anyone can become a hero, and possibly save a life, just by being kind and courteous to others? The best part of all is that becoming a hero is free to all who wish to wear such an honor.

64. Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?

A. Why Should You Be A Hero? B. What Exactly Is A Hero?

C. I Am A Hero. D. Everyone Is A Hero.

65. The underlined word “courtesy” in Paragraph 4 means the behavior that is ______ .

A. both polite and respectful B. both brave and fearless

C. both thoughtful and considerate D. both cute and kind

66. The underlined word “it” in the last sentence of Paragraph 5 refers to ______ .

A. the wonderful card the writer received

B. the action of sending the card

C. the fact that the card saved the writer

D. the fact that the sender was a true friend

67. According to this passage, which of the following can be considered as the behavior of a hero?

A. Hol ding a door open for someone.

B. Sending someone a wonderful card.

C. Keeping writing many stories for children.

D. Being kind to someone who has a hard time.

第四部分 写作(共两节,满分35分)

第一节 任务型读写(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

阅读下面短文,根据所读内容在表格中的空白处填入恰当的单词。

注意:每个空格只填一个单词。

Earth Hour is a global event organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature, also known as World Wildlife Fund) and is held on the last Saturday of March every year, asking families and businesses to turn off their unnecessary lights and other electrical equipment for one hour to raise awareness about the need to take action on climate change. Earth Hour was put forward by WWF and The Sydney Morning Herald in 2007, when 2.2million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all unnecessary lights. Following Sydney's lead, many other cities around the world adopted the event in 2008. Earth Hour 2010 will take place on March 27, 2010 from 9:00 pm to 10:00 pm local time.

Earth Hour 2009 was from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm local time, on March28, 2009. 88 countries and about 4,000 cities joined Earth Hour 2009, ten times more than Earth Hour 2008 had (2008 saw about 400 cities participate). Among the participants in 2009 was, for the first time, the headquarters of the United Nations in New York City. The UN conservatively estimates that its participation would save $102 in energy.

Reports showed that the Philippines topped the Earth Hour participation as 647 cities and towns or over 15 million Filipinos were estimated to have joined in the hour-long lights-off at 8:30-9:30 pm local time. This was followed by Greece with 484 cities and towns participating, and Australia with 309.

The capital city of India, New Delhi's power demand fell by 1000MW.The Canadian province of Ontario, not including the c ity of Toronto, saw a decrease of 6% of electricity while Toronto saw a decrease of 15.1%(nearly doubled from 8.7% the previous year) as many businesses darkened, including the landmark CN Tower. According to Vietnam Electricity Company, Vietnam electricity demand fell 140,000 kWh during Earth Hour. The Philippines was able to save 611 MW of electricity during the period, and was said to be equal to shutting down a dozen coal-fired power plants for an hour.

Critics claimed that because Earth Hour volunteers drive around to get the word out, and because people use uneconomical battery operated torches instead of more economical light bulbs, it's possible that Earth Hour actually resulted in an increase in energy usage.

The Christian Science Monitor said that most candles are made from paraffin (石蜡), in some cases, replacing light bulbs with candles will cause an increase, instead of a decrease, in carbon dioxide emissions.
