Good afternoon, everyone. Thank you for all your attendance. My topic is The Olympic Games taken from Senior English for Vocational Student’s Book (Grade One) Unit 20. My presentation consists of four parts.

Part I Analysis of the teaching material

Status and function

This lesson is to introduce to us the well-known event —— the Olympic Games. The article concentrates on the history of the Olympic Games: the beginning of the Olympics, the development of the Olympics, the modern Olympic Games and the spirits of the Olympics.

Teaching Aims and Demands

Language objects

1. To master words like instrument, besides, relaxed, honor, ban, renew, spirit, competition, variety, compete, throughout, etc.

2. To grasp some useful sentences and language points.

Ability Objects

1. To improve students’ reading ability by fast-reading and intensive reading.

2. To enable the students to master the information of this passage about the Olympic Games, as well as the language points.

3. To encourage students express in English.

4. To train the students to love and take an active part in the sports.

Moral Objects

1. To enhance the students the awareness of the knowledge about the Olympic Games

2. To know about the spirits of the Olympics and learn how to cooperate with others in life. Meanwhile try to teach the students to develop the habbit of taking exercise regularly.

Teaching Key Points

1. To help the students get a general idea of the whole passage, and some detailed information and language points as well.

2. To help the students to draw from the passage what they think is important in the Olympic Games.

Teaching Difficulties

Reading comprehension and reading skills.

Part II Teaching Methods

According to the modern perception theories and social intercourse teaching theories, I adopt the question – and – answer method, cooperative method and discussion method in my teaching.

First, question – and –answer method, to some degree, it can arouse the students’ interest and widen their knowledge.

Second, cooperative method can cultivate the students’ communicating skills and influence efficiency of the class

Third, discussion can help develop their thinking and communicative ability.

At the same time, I’ll make use of the multimedia computer assisted instrument, which is known to be colorful and attractive and can cover more points within the limited time. It also can mobilize the students’ enthusiasm and creativity in learning English.

Teaching Aids

A computer, a projector and a blackboard.

Part III Learning Methods

Task – based, self – dependent and cooperative learning, as well and holistically, this class is student – centered. The teacher only act as facilitator and instructor.

Part IV Teaching procedure

I divided the teaching process into six steps.

Step 1 Lead – in

First, I show the theme song of the 2008 Olympics You and Me on the PowerPoint and ask the students whether they know about it. And then show pictures about the Olympics on the PowerPoint. The purpose is to arouse the students’ interest of study on the Olympics.

Step 2 Fast reading

Give the students four questions, then let them read as quickly as possible and answer them, correct them.

Questions;

(1)    When and where were the ancient Olympic Games held?

(2)    When and where the first modern Olympic Games held?

(3)    Why were the Olympic Games not held in 1916,1940 and 1944?

(4)    What is the spirit of the Olympic Games?

The purpose is to concentrate on the students’ thinking, make them find the main idea quickly to develop some basically skills of reading. It also prepares for knowing something about the Olympics and understanding the main idea of the text.

Step 3 Intensive Reading

Students are required to go through all paragraghs one by one. At the same time, some detailed questions are shown on the screen for them to find the answers.
