Get on a bicycle and ride around your neighbourhood. You may discover something new all around you. Stopping and getting off a bike is easier than stopping and getting out of your car. You can bike to work and benefit (受益) from the enjoyable exercise without polluting the environment. You don’t even have to ride all the way.
Folding (折叠) bikes work well for people who ride the train. Just fold the bike and take it with you. You can do the same on an airplane. A folding bike can be packed in a suitcase. Today, roller skating (旱冰) is easy and fun, and it is popular throughout the world. People roller skate outside on paths and roads, and inside in rinks(溜冰场). In his spare time he liked to play the violin. Joseph Merlin was a man full of ideas and dreams. People called him a dreamer.
One day Merlin received an invitation to attend a fancy dress ball (化装舞会). He was very pleased and a little excited. Merlin tried different ways to make himself fool. Finally, he decided to put two wheels under each shoe. These were the first roller skates. Merlin was very proud of his invention and dreamed of arriving at the party on wheels while playing the violin.
On the night of the party Merlin rolled into the room playing his violin. Everyone was surprised to see him. There was just one problem. Merlin had no way to stop his roller skates. The two friends — Sevareid, 17 and Port, 19 — had to shout in each other’s ears to be heard over the noise of the rushing water. They were moving fast in a boat. To the left and right were cliffs(悬崖).
Before the boys had left their homes in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on June 17, 1930, their families had tried to talk them out of the dangerous trip. But the boys were determined. They would start at their homes near the Mississippi River and paddle their boat to Hudson Bay, a distance of more than 2,000 miles.
Sevareid and Port had never traveled by boat before and knew very little about life in the woods. But as they neared the end of their four-month journey, they had learned many lessons firsthand. They had endured(忍耐) cold rain, icy winds, and sleepless nights. They were nearly out of food like sugar and hardtack, a kind of hard biscuit. They could, however, catch fish they wanted. But the days were getting shorter, and they had to pay attention to getting to Hudson Bay before the winter freeze set in.
As they neared the end of their adventure(冒险), Sevareid and Port realized that the challenges of survival in the wild made the difficulties of ordinary life seem small.
In October 1930 they returned to Minneapolis. They had traveled more than 2,000 miles down rivers and across lakes and had faced many difficulties and dangers. They discovered the trip had changed them. Sevareid, who later became a famous reporter, said, “It was as though we had suddenly become men and were no longer boys.”
